Where is the degradation?

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 1:12 pm

TSIA, where is it? I have yet to see any of my weapons or armor degrade after upgrading and constantly using them.

And yes, I'm aware that items no longer degrade ala Oblivion, however, I am not seeing the so called Skyrim degradation. Am I just missing something?

Is this a bug or did they just scrap the whole concept?

Are you talking about Oblivion style degradation? Because as far as I know, weapons and armor in Skyrim were intended to be upgraded from their raw stats to 'flawless' quality, at which point they would degrade over a period of time, forcing players to constantly manage their weapons, lest they drop back to their raw stats.

Apparently it was too complex for some players... Same with the stats going outta window.

Not really reason to make game even less RPG.

I honestly don't care, as long as I can tweak and forge my own weapons, which I can.

Skyrim is the best game I've ever played: it is even better than Morrowind was!!!!!

If its any comfort I plan to mod in a "degrade" system for weapons and armor :D.

Bethesda want the money of the dumb kid who need auto regen health to kill a goblin and can't manage too many skill at the same time. And yet they cannot comprehend that the very content included in their games means their userbase/customers are advlts and young advlts.

Still weary about buying it. Only morrowind was good unmodded and I want to see how modabble this is first.

IMO if you're just going to mod, then don't bother getting it. This is one of the best games i've ever played.

You've played Oblivion modless and enjoyed the consolized interface, the level scaling, the leveling, thousand of bug, etc?
Then you will enjoy the level capping of the quest reward of skyrim!!!

Xbox360/Ps3 I presume?
It's not the kind of quality I expect of a pc game in 2011, this game feels like 4 year too late, it feels more like bloodmoon was to morrowind.
Patience is a virtue, I'll watch and see. (more Nay that Yay at the moment, and I was always a day one buyer for TES.)

They removed degradation, but added the possibility to upgrade, so there is still a use for the blacksmithing skill and still a way to level it up. I would say they didn't remove the feature, simply flipped the way it works. What's closer to realism, upgrading armor at a forge after smelting iron or taking ten repair hammers with you into a dank cave?

Repairing said armor and weapon at a forge, and making emergency fix in the dank cave.

Don't miss it at all. All that menu opening, fiddling through pages of menus to find my hammers, then waste 300 coins in hammers fixing everything was no fun at all. Now we can spend our time looting, exploring, actually doing something productive. It's like old muscle cars. They are fun to fix up and improve with high performance parts but no fun to fix when you throw a rod or blow a head gasket.

Seriously the crafting system is insane and very in depth, so they threw out repair. The trade off is well worth it.

I didn't like degradation at all in previous games so this is a good change for me, nothing too complex just annoying when u constantly have to spend time to fix your stuff.

Yup, repairing wasn't fun, just a chore. Upgrading items however, IS fun :).

This honestly dosen't bother me, and i have come from TES Arena and right through, back then i loved it, by the time Oblivion came i couldn't be bothered with it, so now i am pretty happy i can just get on with crafting new weapons and armour, or cooking up some delicious salmon steak, or visiting the alchemy station... Then heading out into the wild to hunt some game... Then heading home to the wife, only to find i am insanely bored with her and her rants about how cold Skyrim is, so off with her head and into the basemant she goes!

The wife part didn't happen... by the way.

Yeah, degradation is something that won't be missed at all in my book. It was just a chore and really took you out of the game to force you to do something pretty pointless. Oh, let's not forget the Oblivion system where you had to spam Disintegrate weapon/armor on yourself so you could level your Armorer up so you could repair magic items!

Good riddance.

Because maintaning and repairing your equipment is a chore and pause in the game.

There's really no challange sitting on your ass oiling your weapon, or having a blacksmith do it for you. It's just... bore.

They decided that allowing ways to improve your weapon was better than having to fix them all the time.

The biggest flaw of the game. I hate it, but since Skyrim does very good on other parts, I can live with it... for now. Also the "it wasn't fun" comments baffle me, does everything need to be fun and provide instant gratification? Seriously, what have we come to? Dying isn't fun, so let's take that out as well, no? The flawed execution of a mechanic in previous instalments is no grounds for the exclusion of that mechanic in a future game, nor is it an excuse for said exclusion.

Considering it's been terrible in every single TES game, as well as Fallout 3 and New Vegas, yes, it's much preferable to have it taken out rather than another try at it and Bethesda probably screwing it up again.
