Who you are in singleplayer and multiplayer games

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 4:53 am

So I have a very clear definition of my favorite type of character to play in any sort of fantasy swords and magic game that has combat in it and I enjoy it very much in every single game. However when it comes to online games there seems to be a catch.

Here, have some boring clarifications about the topic and my own story in a spoiler tag, or just skip the spoiler tag and get straight to answering the question, the choice is yours.

Spoiler
I have been playing a game called League of Legends lately, a game where you play a so called "champion" which is basically just a character with 4 abilities (and one passive one) that you control in tower defense maps and depending on how well you play you either win or lose. Now I only needed to search for a little while before I found the champion that what most resembled my favorite playstyle in games like TES, WoW, NWN and other games where you have any control over your playstyle.

Taric is basically a paladin. He can heal himself and others, he deals low melee damage and take a lot of hits, he can buff the damage and armor of himself and other members of his team and then he has a control ability to keep enemies either away or near him (just a stun really). And I went into the game and played Taric for many days and it was (and still is) a lot of fun.

Obviously if your team wins it was the better team but the way the game tracks individual players worth is by counting how many players they land a killing blow on, how often they die and how often they dealt damage to an enemy that then got killed off by another team member. So for a good player at the end of a game he would perhaps have it show up like this "12/2/5" where kills, deaths and assists are in respective order. However my champion Taric that represents my playstyle more often than not ends up with a score that is something more like this "2/0/9". Which as you can see sets him as someone who hardly ever makes a kill but hardly ever dies either.

So what is Taric good for ? Well it goes like this. League of Legends is a tower defense game so an obvious part of that is defending a tower while helping to destroy enemy towers so that you can reach the base of the enemy to destroy a main building that when destroyed ends the game in favor of the opposing team. And for the purposes of defending a tower Taric is really powerful, nothing gets past him and his tower survives. But instead Taric hardly ever presses on to destroy towers. However sometimes when your team is doing well it will go on the offensive and then Taric should go out and help them by healing them and stunning fleeing enemies so that they can kill them or stun pursuers so that they don't catch them when they need to back off again. Which means Taric does not often get in a kill. But there is even more to this story, since any game with Taric in it will have some lane that is really slow. Everyone else is rushing around killing quickly or getting killed quickly but Taric just keeps things in a stasis. Which is equally as good as a fast kill game because while Taric may not kill those attacking him they don't kill him either, and every kill means more XP and gold for the one who made it, so if there are people trying to take down Taric but failing, then their character growth will be stunted and when they go and try to pick off other targets they are met with enemies that are largely superior to them in terms of armor and level, so they become easy pray, while even if Taric is also leveling slower and getting gold slower he is inheritly very tough and will always be found in groups with his allies if not near a tower just staying back to heal and buff them, so he does not mean easy kills for the enemy team either.

So it's all fun and nice to play with my favorite type of character in the game but having also taken a look at other champions I can't say that having my efforts actually recorded feels quite a lot more satisfying than thinking to yourself "hah I did great defending that tower" and then hearing someone say "lol, so few kills!". So there is this inherit lure to go for playstyles that show bigger numbers on the scoreboard at the end of the game despite those playstyles doing no more good at reaching the end goal of not having your base destroyed while destroying the enemy base than the more defensive playstyles.

So the catch is that ultimately popular DPS characters tend to be popular quite precisely because they tend to show off their efforts much better than other types of characters at the end of a game but what I wonder is how many of you stick to your favored playstyle in singleplayer games when you get into multiplayer games and how many of you prefer to change over to whatever playstyle records your actual skills better ? Do you tend to be that guy that plays the Bard in D&D inspiring the great warriors to do their deeds or are you that fighter slashing his way to glory or the wizard preparing his ultimate spell of doom that gets known as "the spell that felled the giant". Or perhaps that is the kind of character you play in your lonesome as well ?

I myself stick to my favored playstyles nearly without exception in multiplayer games as well but how is your general attitude in MMO's and other multiplayer scenarios ? Are you that guy behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothly or are you the seeker of glory that inspires the rest of the team to do better at the end of the game ?

Discuss and don't look for a poll because I'm not making one. Short answers are fine but what would be really cool would be to hear more in depth about your playstyles in both scenarios and how you have reacted in the multiplayer scenario and how others have reacted to you. And perhaps you have some stories to share, it's all good really.

I stick to my favored playstyle for my first playthrough always... On subsequent playthroughs I tend to mix it up a bit and have a bit of fun trying new things but I pretty well always play a stealth type and sometimes a caster type... You'll almost never see me charging into battle like a typical barbarian/warrior...

My favorite character that I ever played in any game was a D&D character from 3.5e that was an assassin who could stab you in the back and if you were lucky enough to survive (key words "lucky enough") she could remove her presence from your mind completely as she drew her sword out of your back still dripping your blood... You could turn around and look straight at her and never know she was there (no invisibility spells required)... Assassin types are pretty much all I play in most games unless I find a fun party support character in some games (Paragon in Guild Wars)...

I figure that it doesn't matter what other people think of my character build or playstyle as long as it works for me...

I always play the mezzer, in single- or multi-player games. Somehow, it's just the most satisfying playstyle for me. Paralyzing a foe and seeing them eliminated before they can land a blow against me or my allies is just awesome. I just love being able to take an enemy out of the fight right away.

In single-player games I always want to be stelathy. If it's possible, I'll do so in multiplayer games as well. Next to that, a medic/healer/cleric is the character I play. In DC:U I was a healer. In dark souls, it's hard to make a thief character that works outside PvP, so cleric. In call of duty, I'm a silenced stelth guy who is never heard or seen on the radar.

Sometimes I play mezzer, sometimes I play support. I enjoy playing Demented Shaman and Succubus, sometimes I play Polywog. Not a very wide range of heroes, but then I don't play HoN that much (I rely on residual knowledge of DOTA to get me by, which doesn't really help now that there are like 50% more heroes than DOTA ever had).

For single-player I usually play a paladin type of character, just because the ability to melee and then heal yourself usually makes for the smoothest single-player experience.

Oh, and HON>LOL if you're the competitive type.

I tank, it represents my personality iRL and I get the most enjoyment out of it. Whenever I start a game ive never played before it's always 2h heavy armor for fantasy or LMG/support fire for shooters.

The only online game I've ever played for any length of time is Guild Wars, and I was always one of two things. The Monk or the Warrior. I like being a Healer in Guild Wars because it's one of the few games where healing is actually a little adrenaline filled, and managing 7 other player's life bars is gratifying.

But my main character was a Warrior through and through. Tanked what she could when she could and interrupted once in a while too.

In single player games I tend towards wizards and magic users. I like the more varied playstyle they have compared to brute force, run and gun types.

Indeed. the responsibility of keeping your team alive is very important role in for example DC:U Online. I was a healer, my friend #1 was a gadged (control) and my friend #2 was a full tank. I used to protect us from damage with shields and heal the damage taken to us, in PvP I was always the target and had to be protected by the tank guy. Gadget guy put auto-turrets, stun a bit and fill up our power bars. The tank guy would spam his best attacks and go full berserk, using his best attack and rely on us healing his health and refilling is power bar. I'd then stand a few meters away with my dual-pistols and deal small amounts of damage and heal them both, unless I was attacked of course. Very fun character to play.

I suppose I'm me, in essence. In terms of gameplay, I tend to be the sort of character that jumps straight into the deep end, then finds herself out of her depth and frantically buggers off again. This situation is repeated pretty much indefinitely, whatever level I happen to be. And in terms of roleplaying, largely a paladin-type role, though a character who's also somewhat irritating and irresponsible: again, mirroring life, I suppose. I've tried to roleplay other character types such as nasty or even just ambiguous characters but always find myself gravitating towards my usual role.

I've pretty much given up trying to play different characters, so the character I established in Oblivion accompanies me pretty much everywhere. I'm not entirely sure how many adventures we've had together now.

Edit: I'm talking single-player games here: I always feel quite uncomfortable in multi-player environments. Kind of svcks that my agoraphobia extends to virtual existence...

I tend to play ranged DPS/hybrid types.

Like, in Diablo 1 & 2, I played the rogue/amazon most often. My most common TES character is ranger-ish - light armor, sword&shield, stealth, some bow & magic support. Fallout 3 was stealth, small guns, sniping. My favorite Borderlands character is the Siren.

In MMOs, I play survivable DPS. Mostly because I tend to solo (not a fan of multiplayer with random people I don't know, and don't have any friends who play), but also because I'm not confident in my ability to be one of the key figures if I did end up in a group (tank, healer, leader). My "main" in WoW has always been a Hunter. My most played City of Heroes characters are Scrappers. Etc.

In the end, though, I don't really play much multiplayer. Again, generally because I'm not big on joining random groups. And also because most multiplayer is ego-tastic, trash-talking, high-action pvp / competition. Really, really, really, not a fan of that genre, or the verbal abuse that seems to be a big part of it.

It just depends what's on offer. In Diablo II, I solely played the Necromancer. In Call of Duty, I'm the (not-so) stealthy sniper. I have great aim, but I have a hard time following the target in CQC, because their movements are so erratic (damn you, dropshoters!).

Singleplayer type games for me, I hate going online and playing with people who never heard the meaning of the word "TEAM WORK".

I play everything, because I never have the patience to get really good at anything.

In LOTRO I enjoyed healing groups for a while, until I got a string of really bad teams with mentally deficient tanks who blamed me for dying. Then I lost interest. Later on I tried tanking myself and had fun with that, until I realized how difficult it would be to master the class I used (Warden) and I lost interest again. I actually never got a DPS class up high enough to do the popular dungeons.

In single player my two preferred styles are low defense high AoE like mages, and high defense fighter classes.

I don't play multiplayer games.

Poor guy.

So many of the most enjoyable gaming moments come from online play. Going clutch almost always feels more epic than scripted moments.

It depends on the game, I think the only tenet I have is adaptability. Singeplayer I tend to play a mix of stealth and if available magic. But again it can vary from game to game.

Singleplayer:
Deus Ex HR: Stealth all the way, non violence.
Skyrim: Sneaky Mage
Fallout New Vegas: Smart, sneaky, and talky guy. Eventually had all my skills maxed out. 1 luck and poor physical stats to pull that off. Used only revolvers, unless up against a super big enemy.
Witcher 2: Blademaster, focus on defensive style of fighting. Had to slightly branch out into the other brnaches, but almost a pure build.
Vampire the Masquerade: Stelath and Talking, with a dash of combat.
Knights of the Old Republic: Smuggler, and later Consular.

Multiplayer:
The Old Republic: Gunslinger
Team Fortress 2: Fairly good at most classes, but my best is Medic. Followed by Heavy. Play an adaptive style, often changing roles as the situation warrants.
Counter Strike: Prefer light weight SMG to be nimble an dmove around the maps more.
Battlefield 2142: Heavy duty shock trooper mixed with some medic.
Battlefield Bad Company 2: General all perpose Grunt, or Engineer.
Company of Heroes: American followed by Panzer Elite. Quick mobile factions.
40K Spacemarine: Assault, again a very mobile hit and run class.
Guild Wars: Ranger, disruption build. Didn't play much, but there you go.
Lord of the Rings Online: Captain, all perpose class.

Just some examples. As you can see I have no real true pattern, my play style is too adpative to really say. I guess the one thing I can say, is NOT a leader. About it really, I don't like using microphones, or directing people. I work better on my own. In team based games though I'll likely look for the guy with the plan because I know working togeather is often better. Again adaptability. All I can say. Not that I don't have plans, but prefer to be doing the work.

I prefer support in multiplayer. But not healing unless it's FPSs.
In single player I play almost anything but usually a spear wielder if that is available.

In single player games I usually stick with stealth and minimal confrontation, I like the challenge of sneaking past people and seeing what I can get away with. In multiplayer games, usually a support type role. Either through buffs for team-mates or straight out healing. For example in tf2 I play a lot of medic, support pyro or spy.

I play like a Crusader, nice to the people who are on my side or neutral, but the enemies are a scourge that must be wiped off the face of the earth, completely.

Any weapons possible, guns, swords, bombs, lasers, my own fists.

In games I play:
Singleplayer:
Fallout: no real preference other than I always choose direct assault attack style
TES: charge into battle with my sword and shield!

Multiplayer:
Team Fortress 2: Semi-Professional Pyro (I'm the back-up for Team Rainbow Dash)
Counter Strike: SMG/Shotgunner
Warhammer 40K Space Marine: Assault, Jumppack + Power Axe forever!
Halo: Assault Rifle + Shotgun, evade armor ability if I'm playing Reach

I try to play all games as close to how I would in real life using the option given to me in game.
I always take a cautious approach to close and/or dark spaces with my weapon ready incase of a surprise attack.
I always prefer melee/unarmed weapons to that of firearms or magic but I will use them if I feel the need requires them.
Fallout and Skyrim I am the sneaky melee weapons taking the Super Sledge and Glass Warhammer respectively.
On Multiplayer I play as stealthy as I can using CQC weapons like shotguns or SMGs but since MW3 nerfed shotguns soooo horribly I have stuck with the MP5 or the MP 9, even picking up the odd sniper or AR.
