Why adopt? when you could easilly make your own?

Post » Sat Nov 17, 2012 5:35 pm

I know many people mite think this as a bit of an innapropriet idea so if it offends you I will appologise in advanced.

I am not by ay any means bieng negative towards the whole idea of adoptions, but wouldnt it be neat if in alturnative you were able to start your own family with your own blood born aires. I can fully understand Bethesda's stance on advlt or mature oriented content. Thats all well and good, but I propose that if a game like Fable @C can get away with featuring something that lets us have six and reproduce, look up Fable 2 if you dont bealieve me, why not Skyrim? would you consider it more interesting if you indeed could have your own children?

I just thought it mite be interesting to consider and discuss.

so lets discuse!

It is unlikely that one in-game year will pass until you complete all Skyrim has to offer. Making a family is not fit for this game... maybe for next if time passes faster there but it is too late for Skyrim.

Yeah I also agree this Sims 3-esque feature would be a strategic one to add. But this would require an entire game overhaul because it would require aging of your toon and his NPC family.

The Dovahkin could have 1-2 children born to him in game. Each time you leave the home and return, time advances by a set timescale. (e.g. 8 hrs fast travel = 1 year skyrim time etc).
Then the challenge would be raising these kids (while adventuring/dungeon crawling/etc) and trying to keep them safe as heirs until at least their teenage years.

At least 1 child needs to survive into their teens, so you pick the heir of your choice to replace the Dovahkin/Tamriel hero in the event he dies in the game (which is frequent without the use of cheats and tgm)

But if the Dovahkin dies before any of his/her children become teenagers, then you'd have to begin a new savegame. So this DID style meets the Sims 3 would add some intresting challenge and strategy to the game.

There also could be an option to have the heirs accompany the Dovahkin as followers (both as children and older) so they can get XP fighting monsters/enemies, or just hanging out (fishing, hunting etc.) with Dad/Mom

But as Akul mentioned, this may not be possible for TES V due to potential synchronization issues with the game clock. I do have hope for TES VI however

Sorry, but I say that's wrong for several reasons, none of them six-related. But the chief one? Imagine an 8-1/2 months pregnant Dovahkiin trying to scramble up mountains, jump off waterfalls, or even put on her armor. And since children CANNOT be killed in Skyrim (which I support 105%), that means the child-carrying Dovahkiin would have to be essential for three months (since a baby is considered viable around about Week 27). The game wouldn't be much of a challenge then, would it?

you just had to take it there....didn't you?

The image of a pregant Dovhakin mountain climbing is just priceless. Because only in Nirn is this 100% realistic(and perfectly logical).

Alright. I'll admit to :mage: baiting here.

But why would this have to be a 9 month ordeal? Just speed up the time flow and have pregancies over 8-9 game hours. Where the game hours aren't the hours you've been playing the game, but actual time that elapses in game while traveling on the map.

e.g. every 24 game hours = 1 game year. On a timescale like that, a LOT of events can happen within the 15 or so game years it would take the Dovahkin's children to become teens and replace him if/when he/she dies etc .

And now that I've completely managed to derail the OP's thread, I'll end by suggesting we get a special CK feature which would allow us to attempt this in future TES games. While the aging NPC feature would be a royal pain to code, at least give us the ability to create our own children and have up to 4 or even 5? kids around the house.

There's probably software you can use for that. I once saw a digitized image of what Will and Kate's child might look like.

Granted, they are all human, but they aren't all Nords. LOL Yeah, I'm splitting hairs........
Yes, there should be some children of other races, and more spouse candidates for the beast races as well.

Since my characters have been exclusively female, my thoughts also turned to how the heavily pregnant Dovakhiin would cope! At least with adoption you know what you are getting  (even if they are only limited races). Agree that other races should be better represented for spouses and children.

Agreed. There should be Dunmer kids in Riften and Windhelm. And orc kids in the strongholds. Possibly Argonians as well.

There are Nord, Redguard, Breton, and Imperial children in the game. It's a bit hard to tell because they aren't that physically different apart from relatively slight skin tone differences, but they are there.

I think it would be interesting to have. I mean it worked well enough in Fable and that was before Skyrim came out. Now I wouldn't want the multiple wifes/husbands and more kids then you can count haha... But still. its an option.

And I would suggest as your female dragon born moves through the 9 months... her carrying capacity should shrink as her own carry weight increases haha.

I'll stick with adoption. Less complex, and no potty-training to worry about.

There are no babies in Skyrim for a reason, no one wants to look after them.

There really isn't any difference to see.

You know that snotty kid in Whiterun, Braith? She's Redguard. Barely a difference in skin tone, and maybe a different haircut.

Seriously, if people went to the bathroom in Skyrim, and you needed to talk to someone that was in the bathroom, if you walked in, would it be illegal? Or would they just attack you with intentions to kill you? :deal:

Um, I think that's what most of the strategically placed buckets in corners are for! Technically it would be 'bucket training'. There are washstands too but no one uses them and most just have ingredients or mead in them. I found an area in one of the caves which looked suspiciously like the toilet area for the bandit den.

I think the only games I've ever played that allowed a player character to relieve themself were "Heavy Rain" and "Bully". Of course, "Heavy Rain" also featured uncensored butt and boob shots.

Back to natural reproduction, I think that it would add a whole lot of unnecessary complexity to the game, and said complexity would only be justified with marathon play sessions, since even with the time compression provided by fast-travel, my longest-running character's been in Skyrim less than a year.

It could just cut to black, and say "nine months later".

Then congratulations! You've finally sired your own child!

Well, that kind of time passing creates its own problems. There's no aging mechanic for any of the characters. And a year or two will create great changes with a small person.

Let's say a year goes by, which is a fairly long Skyrim game. A 9-year-old kid will now be 10, and will probably look more or less the way he/she does today. But an infant will have gone from babe in arms to crawler to toddler.

And if you have multiple kids, you might have 6-7 years pass. the kids you meet at the start of the game should be advlts by now, and your older ones are all different ages. And the game will have to start knocking off elders, aging other characters, maybe having that woman in Dawnstar have her kid, and others as well. And they'd have to determine your child's capabilities. If he's a Nord with a Breton father, will he be 50% frost-resistant? 40? 30? Will he have any magic resistance. And so on.
