Why do Bethesda always do this!

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 10:43 am

In Morrowind we where introduced to the Male Dunmer Voice most of us came to love.

But in early development to the Dunmer in Oblivion they still retained that awesome deep gravely scratchy voice but
then later Bethesda replaced it with a terrible sounding Posh voice .

In Skyrim in the early video's we saw the Dunmer had the gravely Voice to but now in game most of the Dunmer have a non gravely Australian sounding voice not that its bad i like Keith zab whatever his second name is hes a very good voice actor but its still not the trademark Dunmer voice i really don't understand why Bethesda does this when they know most of us love the Trademark Dunmer Voice.

Heres the Trademark Dunmer Voice in Skyrim. Before it was replaced.

And Oblivions Dark Elf Voice before it was Replaced by that hideous voice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjbx6-KQoRg
skip to 45 to here the voice.

I know! I REEEAAAAALLLLLY wish we had the Morrowind Dunmer voice back. I will say that they are much, much better than Oblivion's though.

The gravelly voice of Morrowind suited the Dunmer better and I was hoping they would add it back and it suits their harsher nature and mannerisms better.

I associate that voice almost solely with the Ordinators, actually . . . They may have called me scum, but they did it in a way that sounded awesome! Almost made me feel bad for killing them.

The accent they have in Skyrim is more of a Skyrim accent.

The accent you hear in Morrowind is a accent the Dunmer FROM Morrowind have.

So as far as lore goes the Dunmer who come from Morrowind should have the raspy accents.

The Dunmer who were born in Skyrim should have the autrellian voice.

Well, here is my theory: Hear me out.

Vvardenfell is Nirn's equivalent of Australia. How you say?
  • they're both island nations, isolated from the rest of the world
  • they both have massive esxtensive wastelands
  • they both have enormous, man eating insects
  • the inhabitants of both lands are the descendants of a bunch of reject exiles
  • both lands have a tribunal of false gods
  • both have a history of enslaving the reptillian and feline peoples
  • all australians have red eyes and ashen skin
So... without Red Mountain's poisonous fumes to ruin their voice boxes... et voila, tunrs out the Dunmer = Australians. Now for my theory on the French + British = Bretons...

I think it has to do with their policy of "...so you can easily tell: this is a Nord, this is an Imperial...". If they added that rasp voice it would be significantly different from all the other voice actors that voice Dunmers. To the point that people would complain.

Trademark Dunmer voice? It's not a trademark if it changes with every game...

I don't think all male Dunmer should have it, but a couple here and there would be great. "We're watching you, scum" in that voice is still one of the great MW moments.

The Dunmer voices in my opinion sound more west country than australian...
But the same goes for Argonians. I loved the almost Russian sound, yet in skyrim they sound like Phillip down the road.
And also, in the demo Alvor has a badass deep rustic voice, yet in the game he's from Sweden.

Maybe after the blight ended and the ash storms subsided their voices started to clear up some.

Granted it does seem odd hearing a perfectly clear voice come out of their mouths.

It IS particularly odd that it's made an appearance in both trailers, only to disappear.

Oh, I'm sure the trailers were made before they'd finished recording the voice actors; that's the only reason for the dif.

So, we've established that Australia is Vvardenfell; and Bretons is the real-life name for a tribe of Celts in Britain. I think Elsweyr is California. Skooma? I mean, dude.

It was nasty and raspy, as if they were one bad coughing fit away from hacking up a lung-shaped tar blob.

Well they did live under Red Mountain that may explain why they sounded like that in Morrowind what with the Blight Plague and all.
Mayby their voices in Skyrim are what they sound like when they aren't breathing in all the Red Mountain crap? lol

I understand why a lot of people would feel nostalgic for it and I agree that the gravelly voice suits them, but the guy who voiced them in Morrowind (I forget his name atm) really isn't a very good voice actor when you look at him from an objective point of view because he can really only carry one inflection in his voice. In other words, his vocal range is very, very limited and IMO that affects his performance adversely.
dude what. Jeff Baker voiced Dagoth Ur, Sheogorath, male dunmer and male Imperials in Morrowind, Haskill in Shivering Isles, pretty much EVERYBODY in Redguard and a ton of dudes in Fallout 3. he has the most range of ANYBODY Bethesda has EVER cast in a role.

Really? Then I guess I was hugely mistaken. Thanks for correcting me.

Why don't non-Dunmer natives to Morrowind sound like chainsmokers?

Accents aren't race specific but rather location specific. For me it made sense that the Dunmer voices in OB were refined as the culture in Cyrodyll was refined.

I much preferred the Dunmer voice in Oblivion, the one in Skyrim sounded like someone making a terrible attempt at putting on an Australian accent.

Honestly, I don't actually care for the Dunmer voice that was used in Morrowind.

So while I agree that the last batch of voice actors hasn't really been up to snuff, I don't think we should go back to Morrowind's voice actor just for the sake of nostalgia.

Desmond is in this clip that I love listening to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jG8OjKiGAvE

The guy has a seriously iconic voice. And I was hooked from the first time he woke me up in Morrowind. I'd like to see (hear) him in more TES.

I think only Divayth Fyr or other old Dunmer should have sounded like they are gargling gravel. I am not sure if I like the Australian accent, but a melodic cultured voice seems better suited to an ancient race like the Dunmer.
