Why do Bethesda always do this!

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 1:55 pm

In Morrowind we where introduced to the Male Dunmer Voice most of us came to love.

But in early development to the Dunmer in Oblivion they still retained that awesome deep gravely scratchy voice but
then later Bethesda replaced it with a terrible sounding Posh voice .

In Skyrim in the early video's we saw the Dunmer had the gravely Voice to but now in game most of the Dunmer have a non gravely Australian sounding voice not that its bad i like Keith zab whatever his second name is hes a very good voice actor but its still not the trademark Dunmer voice i really don't understand why Bethesda does this when they know most of us love the Trademark Dunmer Voice.

Honestly, I don't actually care for the Dunmer voice that was used in Morrowind.

I understand why a lot of people would feel nostalgic for it and I agree that the gravelly voice suits them, but the guy who voiced them in Morrowind (I forget his name atm) really isn't a very good voice actor when you look at him from an objective point of view because he can really only carry one inflection in his voice. In other words, his vocal range is very, very limited and IMO that affects his performance adversely.

So while I agree that the last batch of voice actors hasn't really been up to snuff, I don't think we should go back to Morrowind's voice actor just for the sake of nostalgia.

Good riddance, IMO.

What was in MW was not husky or gravely. It was nasty and raspy, as if they were one bad coughing fit away from hacking up a lung-shaped tar blob.

What we got for the "generic" male dunmer voice in Skyrim is actually husky.

I don't mean anyone Voice actor in particular i just mean that type of sounding voice is what really makes the Dunmer, well the dunmer for me atleast.

Many feel nostalgic for the raspy Dunmer voice. Bethesda's reluctance to bring back the voice actor is proof that they hate you.

Sarcasm? They are well aware that people liked the voice and would have brought the VO back by now if they had any plans to. Time to move on...

They went to speech therapy. You see, in the land of Skyrim, they didn't want to appear less educated and more unkempt than their new Nordic neighbors. Nords, after all, have always been considered the dingbats of Tamriel. Who would want to appear less civilized than them and even open themselves up to criticism by those very nitwits? Instead, they found their glory at dike Van Dyke's School of British Accents. To the trained ear, there is a tingling of anticipation for them to spontaneously break out in a grand "Chim Chim Cheree" chorus... but to the Nords, they sound like distinguished gentlemen and this intimidates them. There is an explanation for everything.

I understand why people would be nostalgic for it, but to be fair, not all of us like it simply because of nostalgia. I played Oblivion first. My first character was a Dunmer. When I heard other Dunmer talk, I had nothing else to compare it to, so I just assumed that's how they were supposed to sound. In my mind, however, I always pictured my character having a rougher, grittier voice. When I finally played Morrowind a good while later, that voice really sounded pretty close to how I imagined my Dunmer would sound.

Some people love the Morrowind rasp and hate the others. Some people hate the rasp and prefer the others. But, you can't please everyone so what are you gonna do?

Plus, the rasp is really hard on the throat. I couldn't imagine having to record hours of dialogue like that.

I've heard what I would call a raspy, Morrowind-style voice coming from a Dunmer male. I don't remember the name of the NPC now, I just remember he was in the New Gnisis Cornerclub.
