Why did the chicken cross the road?

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 5:37 pm

I bet most of you don't really understand the joke.

I just figured it out today. 15 years of my life meant nothing until now.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

To get to the other side.

When chickens cross roads, they become road kill.

The other side is heaven.

Huh.
"the other side" is commonly misinterpreted as the other side of the road, when in actuality the other side is the afterlife. Meaning, the chicken will be run over if it tries to cross the road.

Where do you live? No, it doesn't matter. I'm gonna hunt down every person with the username Peace Bullet until I find you... Oh yes.
And then you'll REALLY take an arrow to your knee!

The truth hurts.
Now spread that depression. Tell your family! Tell your friends about the truth! Hell, tell the old lady next door. They need to know.,.

No, the chicken really did just cross the road. The joke is that you think people and chickens are different. For most people it's just not true.

And it makes sense really. When was the last time you've seen a chicken living to cross the road? I've never.

Seeing as this joke came about in the mid 19th century, I doubt that's the true meaning of the joke.

Why would the date of creation matter?

Its actually a form of anti-humour.
The point of the joke is to make people think something funny is going to happen, but when they say the punchline its just the truth and not funny.
The people laugh at the lack of punchline, and not the joke itself.

Well there's really three correct answers:

1. Literally- to get to the other side of the road
2. Metaphysically- heaven
3. Reality- chickens never cross roads; in fact, they avoid the [censored] out of it

A short version of the shaggy-dog story ;)

You say you really understand the joke OP? It was the first thing I ever learned in Latin...until you've done that, you really don't understand the joke!

I don't think anyone understands it anymore. The three answers I provided above are probably not the only ones.

But, next time someone tells that joke, think fast- because it's a trick question. The chickens hate the color of pavement and frankly are afraid of it. They'd never cross a road.
