Why did you buy Skyrim for a console?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 8:02 am

You can play skyrim on Ultra Graphics settings with a 300-350 dollar PC. And the sales don't include steam sales which is figured to be up to 1.5 million + and growing every day, good one chief.

I think this is the lowest quote i have ever seen. Does this include a monitor?

I have been out of PC gaming for a while, but I know the first thing you need is a top of the line video card. I just checked the nvidia site and the GTX 570 is $270.

If you can truly build a powerhouse PC for $300, then maybe I really made a mistake...

Bought it for Ps3 because I don't like mods and I'm not a PC gamer. Don't regret it after hundreds of hours.

If you're not a PC gamer how do you know you don't like mods?

Yes a PC is more expensive than an Xbox
No PC gaming isn't dying.
Yes you can build a good mid-range PC for around $600 if you live in America
Yes you can hook a PC up to a HDTV with little more than simply plugging it in and going to the control panel
No you don't have to upgrade a PC regularly to play the latest games; that only needs to be done if you're determined to max even the most demanding games at >60fps

..right, now we can all be friends again.. HUGZ 4 EVRYWUN!

Physical disabilities make it hard for me to play it on PC, a controller is easier on my hands and I can also lay on the couch. I already do a lot behind my PC at home as a volunteer(mostly building websites for foundations and such)so I sit behind the PC way too long as it is. I practically crawl to the couch after a long day of work.

I started playing console when Oblivion came out, before that I was a PC-gamer(and not a freaking cripple either, or at least not as bad). I miss the mods but I don't miss the wracking pains!

Also PC's are ridiculously expensive over here and upgrading them every time costs me enough as it is. I usually get a new one when my dad buys another one ie. I get the old one and that's fine for my graphic programs which cost me more than enough in terms of keeping up though I'm always one version behind.

Plus the CK isn't even out yet that I know of, so it is pointless IMO.

Seriously?

That's an idiotic statement given the relevance mods will have on this game.

Its just easier to play and more convenient.

The only thing that appeals to me is mods, and I hate keyboard and mouse. So i'm not going to spend so much to buy a gaming PC.

You're wrong on SO many levels.

The reason you don't see PC titles on the shelves is because PC has moved a generation above consoles not just in hardware, but distribution.

PC has moved on to digital distribution for games, AKA STEAM ( Look it up, over 4.5 million users online at peak times every day ).

Again, you're one of the prime examples of common misconceptions of console gamers.

Please educate yourself and do some research on platforms instead of making decisions based on what you see in the stores. Realize that technology has moved up and the internet is used now.

Was about to make a similar comment about games in stores. I've known a few people who have made similar comments to me about the lack of games for PC's in stores. I usually reply something along the lines of "What you mean you have to go to a store for your games? If I feel like getting a new game I don't even have to get out of my PJs"

Anyways, I've been gaming for years and although I've come close to getting a console many times I've just never gotten around to it or felt it's necessary because I've always had a computer that will play games as well as do the numerous other things computers do. Up until this week I've never spent tons on a gaming computer either. Finally splurging and getting an pretty decent custom system (also using it for media work). Not knocking console users at all here it's just that for me a PC has made more financial sense and I haven't found that it can't do many of the things that console users say are an advantage and combines many other separate media tech into one box. I can easily hook it up to my larger flatscreen and play from the couch if I feel like it. It's also my media center-so blu-ray/dvd player, music machine (with surround sound hooked into it), photo and video storage, internet stream (both video and music) etc etc. By the time I added up the cost of getting all those capability separately it works out cost wise plus of course has all the other capabilities that computers have. This one was 800 bucks 3 years ago and still plays Skyrim fine. Not as optimal in terms of settings as it could be but still haven't had any problems. I don't need anything else really.

Plus as above, I barely ever have to go out to the store to get anything. The only time it svcks is if my internet connection goes down....small price to pay I guess. :)

I built a PC for around 750-800 € (could've gotten under 700€ were it not for the Thailand floods). It runs Skyrim on Ultra with HD texture mod packs, ENBseries and more and I still get a playable FPS (to me at least).

I was for a long time stuck with a PC from early-2000s and pretty much restricted to games up to around 2005. That's about the time the puny Radeon X300, AMD Athlon 64 1.8 GHz processor and 256 MB RAM just gave up (barring a few exceptions like Sins of a Solar Empire or indie games). The PC still works after many years since purchase. Sure, HDD's bloated and fragmented as hell and needs a clean OS install but it works and can play many older games with decent FPS.

At the same time I owned an Xbox (Halo got me hooked up), PSX, N64 etc. and as the PC couldn't keep up, I moved on to the console. I only ever got back to PC occasionally to play some older games such as Morrowind. Got a 360 in 2007 and spent many hours on it on few games due to lack of money to buy more games. Then that one RROD for the first time in spring 2010 and pretty much died in the summer heatwave same year (Out of warranty). Then the PC monitor gave up and refused to work. Replaced the monitor and got a 360 Slim with whatever money I had saved up from working and scholarships.

Then Skyrim hits the news in late December and I'm left figuring out what platform to play it on. After working again and earning scholarships that well enough would cover the costs of a PC and the initial fees for a student apartment in a distant town from home, I was set on the PC in summer.

And here I am, back into PC gaming since 2004 with a high-end rig and a current generation console as well, getting the best of both worlds on a single monitor (screw you, TV-fee!). All that's left to do is replace the old speakers from an old PC (you've served me well since the 90s), maybe get a gaming mouse and a comfy chair, and catch up on 7 years of PC gaming. (The good stuff, that is. The DRM madness has a lot of work to do to get into my good books.)

Several reasons. I own oblivion on both pc and xbox, and I would always choose the xbox over the pc any time, although my pc could run it at far better graphics settings.

Start-up time. If I am lying in bed on a lazy Sunday morning and decide a want to have a cup of tea, some marmite on toast and a game of Skyrim, I simply cannot be bothered with the hassle of booting up my computer. With the xbox, one press of the button in the middle.of my controller and it's ready in literally seconds.

Audio. I have a high-spec amplifier connected to 5.1 surround sound which I use for my consoles and is able to connect to my PS3 for the blueray movies, or consoles for games. It only uses optical in, and my pc doesn't have an optical out.

Controller. I can't be bothered fiddling with buying and setting up a 360 controller on my pc when I already own a 360 with several controllers. Keyboard and mouse setup is backwards - why would anybody use it out of choice? It may give more control, but it is far more effort to use than a few buttons and two thumbsticks.

I can use my computer. If I want to play music, browse the internet or if my fiance wants to use the pc she can do so without affecting my game. If I want to look something up mid-game, no need to alt-tab out. If I choose to play my own music, it won't take up system resources Skyrim is using.

Bug-free. Hah! Fool as I was, I thought it more likely that it would have fewer bugs on the 360 as there are not multiple hardware setups that have to be taken into account. To be fair this is usually the case, and I have been caught out before with pc games that screwed up because of certain drivers I had installed, and other annoying things that just can't happen on a console.

I used to be a hardcoe pc gamer but then I saw the light. I just find consoles so much more user-friendly. Computers just get complicated and feel... I guess 'clunky' is the right word.

Xbox. Bought an Xbox for many reasons and I don't regret it. My friend is a PC gamer and he seems to spend more time tinkering with specs and trying to juggle mods than he does actually playing the game. Most of the mods aren't what I'd like anyway - the only one I would quite like would be a hardcoe/survival mode. I don't care about making it all pretty (I like the gritty, rugged look) and I don't want nvde mods. Plus it was developed for 360s, so I don't feel like I'm getting the rough end of the stick at any time.

Hopefully everyone is having fun on whatever platform they got the game for.

Where is the option "My PC will easily run the game but prefer to play games on a console."?This pole is as usual bias and the results will be skewed.

I used to be a PC gamer. I don't think my PC would have run Skyrim well enough to make it worthwhile getting it on the PC though, Oblivion looks worse on my PC then on the xbox360 so I went for the xbox version straight away thing time around. I have 2 xbox 360 standing around from better times, and don't have the money to upgrade our PCs in these (for us) much leaner times.
I have no regrets. the game runs as smooth as anything, it looks absolutely amazing and I haven't run into any bugs or glitches. The only problem I ran into was having so share my copy with my husband and daughter, but getting a second copy for my husband's xbox quickly solved that :D

I thought I might miss mods, but unlike Morrowind which had rather bad player/npc models this game looks amazing out of the box, and unlike Oblivion with it's weird scaling this game's scaling and levelling system with the perks is perfect, so I have nothing I want to fix with mods really.

I'm very happy with my decision, and will happily buy the next Bethesda game for the xbox 360.

This poll is a little biased, isn't it? "Took a leap of faith, ended badly" What? No "Took a leap of faith, ended well" option?

There is that. Though the value of buying a next-gen console vs. upgrading or buying a new PC is going to vary from person to person, and can only be considered within the context of their overall situations.

Great point.

One observation I've taken from the last few pages is console users ignoring the fact that PC's are usually more than just a gaming rig while a console is purely that, exceptions being media play back and sub-par net browsing.

Point being my PC's main role is as a work station hence it pays for itself. The only "cost" to my pocket is the addition of ram and an upgraded graphics card.

Better/more people on xbox to talk to whilst playing. Also I prefer the controls for xbox, I know you can use a xbox controller for pc but its just more hassle. Also don't want to waste money on upgrading/buying a new pc to play games like this. I also prefer to play most other games on xbox, assassins creed, fifa for example.

Ah, see I would rather eat lots than have a good gaming comp. lol.

I eat just fine, and I upgrade my gaming rig every few month. I'm married with three kids, one in college, I own my own house, and I do it because its a hobby not out of necessity, Maybe when you grow up and start working you too can have a grown up computer!

I'm not ignoring that, it's simply irrelevant to my decision whether to buy the game for console or PC. If I had a PC that could comfortably run Skyrim, I might have gone for that option but I don't. I do however have an xbox 360 sitting here that I bought about three years ago in a sale for €169 that can run Skyrim without any hassle.
My PC is great for playing older games like Morrowind, indie games and MMOs that tend to scale well (not to mention browsing the internet) but that's all I use my PC for. So I don't see the need to spend hundreds on upgrading my PC just to play a game I can play on my console.
