Why dual-wield swords?

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 12:10 am

In Oblivion you were able to block with your sword, but now in Skyrim it seems you can only block with a shield.

So life without a shield will be very short indeed...

Cuz you can hit faster so the enemy won't even hit you before they die.

To balance, you shouldent be able to block with two weapons as it will make sheilds useless and pointless.

Why block if you can't dual-wield? Dual-wielding sacrifices defense for offense. That's what I'm guessing of course.

The point of dual wielding is to increase your damage, not to block.

It seems that you can no longer keep swinging like a maniac.. Every swing now uses a piece of your stamina and there is also a cooldown per swing. Let's say you have a longsword in one hand and a shortsword in the other... You swing the longsword and would normally have to wait for the animation and cooldown to finish, but now that you have the other hand, you can swing while the first hand is in cooldown. Plus its pretty cool to be running around with dual swords or what have you.

You can block with 1h swords...you just have to only have one of them. You can also block with a torch, a shield, and a 2h weapon. There's loads of blocking options :)

Well I think all the ladies in Skyrim would be very impressed by me taking down a dragon while dual wielding swords sooooooo yes it is a viable tactic.

I plan on dual wielding to inflict different damage types and always have at least one type handy in group battles. I'm guessing bludgeoning and slashing work different against different opponents such as skeletons or natural creatures. I'll deffinitely have a mace/short sword combo or blade/axe combo for at least one character.

To survive a dragon attack, you only need to remember one thing. It also works with sharks.

You could deal 2 types of damage, especially with enchantments. Even use one blade to give your enemy a specific elemental weakness, the other to inflict it.

Other than that and specific special moves, we have to assume it has been balanced to be a worthwhile trade off for speed or something.

You can block with a torch in other hand? Awesome! i thought you couldnt block with a one handed weapon unless you had NOTHING in the other hand.

This is the exact reasoning I used when deciding on my character type. See my sig.

Edit: to elaborate further, I plan on trying out the bleed effects with dual wielding axes combined with either more dots or other battle effects to increase the effectiveness of combating multiple targets at once. The Redguard racial is highly beneficial to this type of play. 10x stamina regeneration for 60 seconds will allow for a tremendous amount of dps--especially with enchanted/poisoned blades. It makes me excited even THINKING about it!

Ya, apparently torches do block. Seems a little odd to me, but then again I dunno why you'd have a torch instead of a shield :P

You block with the torch not the weapon. Also I hear that there is a chance to do fire damage at the same time.
