Why is Morrowind still a better game than Skyrim?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 7:24 am

The directions given during quests in Morrowind (sans compass), were clues to look for along the way. It was extremely immersive. You were truly a Ranger in that game, learning the land tree by tree.

I had forgotten about that...

oh yeah, first time trying to locate the cavern of the incarnate

good times

I think it says a lot that Skyrim is tne first time I've ever considered myself done with an Elder Scrolls game. I am still playing and enjoying Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion. Those games had replay value, and Skyrim just doesn't for me. There are just so many things fundamentally wrong with the game that even mods can't save the day any more.

I did enjoy in Morrowind having to read books and notes to find a location. But if I want that old Morrowind feel, I play Morrowind.

I think one of the biggest things for me in Skyrim that makes me just not want to play it at all, is the fact that I have to purposely RP (and with no incentive, at all) to not join every guild that's available, because there are no skill requirements.

In Morrowind, in order to advance and join guilds, you had to be skilled in the skills they found useful. So, a pure thief couldn't join the mages or fighters guild, because a pure thief doesn't have 100 strength, unless you are level 60+ and just started to add those things in. That made the game more realistic. The fact that this is absent in Skyrim is just..it's just sad.

Hmmm... good point. I wonder if skills requirement could be modded in? If it hasn't been done already.

To be honest, I've used all the TES games (since MW) as hiking simulators as in RL I'm disabled so can forgive Skyrim for it's deficiencies. It would be nice though if Bethesda could bring out an enhanced version as a mega patch that brings in all the choice, consequences and politics that would bring replayability. After all, they're the only ones who can bring in the original actors to voice the new lines. Pity it won't happen. It would mean we'd still be playing this game in ten years and they'd make lots more money.

I think Skyrim has a much better world/landscape to explore, and far better combat, but other than that Morrowind still wins in every other aspect.

Mostly its people's preferences but there has been a tendabcy ever since Moroowind itself came out to long for stuff in older games and ignore or marginulize similar things in newer games even if insome ways they are better, I like all the TES I;ve played except Daggerfall. I find the other three all tend to have fans which discount the other two games advantages and amplyfy their favoritesadvantages while amplfying their unfavored games disadvantages.

In short, some people like a paticular TES game better and FOR THEM its a better games but I don't think objectively that would stand up even if objectivity were possible.

In a nutshell

-Unique World
-Heavy Politics
-More Factions
-Opposing Factions
-More Types of Factions (Imperial Based, Dunmer Houses, ect)
-More Content/large expansions
- Better Character Progression and unique ness

true except the last one (well for me anyways)

then again I'm a svcker for better game mechanics which skyrim have and MW don't cause MW is ..well... heavy rpg

You can have some of that feel in Skyrim - turn off your compass and use this mod http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=11135

Thank You for being honest.

If you like Skyrim better, that's your perogative. However, most people try to say that Skyrim is just as much an RPG than Mororwind and it's nice to see someone who dislikes MW actually understand what an RPG really is.

Your still not very convincing ;) try again.

yeah, but in doing so you remove the whole HUD. You have to change the opacity of the HUD which you can do in the menus.

However, that makes playing the game impossible because you have no directions in the game so you have no idea where anything is at without the GPS. They integrated it into the game so much that you just can't play the game without it.

oh I loved MW, LOVED IT the only thing that annoyed me about it was the way characters moved and leveled.... seemed so mechanical :P

but MW setting and story are still greatest, as I said before I just wished skyrim had more quests and a more complex story with more dialog options and politics

i set my hud to about 20% transparent for hack & slash characters. it makes things a little better, but its still not as fun as reading directions from your journal and playing cartographer as the black space of your map fills in.

You can (and should) also disable the floating markers (what a stupid f* idea to make those at all)

Also as TheEngravingMan says, it does make some aspects of the game pretty difficult. You gotta really listen since you can't see the sneak, and think before taking stuff as you won't see the 'red' for stolen stuff.

Also it can make it hard to pick stuff up (no crosshairs) and the context-dependent actions can be hard. So sometimes I turn the opacity up to 50% or so, it does help, and keeps me from staring at the damned 10% of the screen all the time.

There are topics in the TES General forum already open discussing which game is better, http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1369986-morrowind-oblivion-or-skyrim/. Please continue there.
