Why do people use Lydia?

Post » Mon May 21, 2012 10:25 am

Uthgerd the Unbroken is in the pub in Whiterun. Sure, she's not near as cute as Lydia, but she's got better armor (Steel Plate) and weapon and actually gives you 100 gold to hire as a follower. (you challenge her to a brawl, betting 100 gold, she'll follow you if you win and give you 100 gold for winning the brawl) She also has a house to "loot" like Faendal

That's who I have with me.

Possibly because I haven't taken the time to seek out other followers. I actually encountered both her and Sven before Lydia.

I am sworn to carry your burdens.

That made me hate her... if you don't feel like carrying my stuff just say it :flame:

You do know that you can give your follower new armor right?. I just gave my Lydia a full set of Ebony Enchanted gear + weapon and she uses it. She 1 shots most normal mobs and can take a beating.

Are you sure she equips the armor you give her? She very clearly swapped to the orcish 2hander right when I gave it to her, but when you look at what she's carrying, it doesn't show any armor. Obviously she has SOMEthing on, since she can take more of a beating than my mage can, but the fact that it doesn't show in her inventory makes me wonder whether she equips what you provide (again, just speaking of armor, not weaps).

To OP: l use Lydia bc last time I noticed the other chick you mentioned, my mage couldn't take her in a bout of fistacuffs. My resto is high enough now that I could probably whittle her down. Also, I like the fact that Lydia is sworn to me by honor and not just a sellsword.

Lydia is a cool chick and an interesting character, but I'm not a big fan of her personality.

"I'll kill you if I have to" = I'm squeamish about fighting
"I am sworn to carry your burdens" = passive aggressive [censored]ing
She seems impetuous as well.

I'm a huge fan of Mjoll the Lioness. She's got that "grizzled Veteran" feel (Feels like more of an equal than a follower), and seems to be a lot more spiritual and contemplative than Lydia. Also, apparently Mjoll has better stats, but that's unconfirmed.

Just a thought

I hate using Lydia, can't stand what she says after you ask to trade with her, where as other followers will say "What do you want to trade?"

I guess people havn't noticed that you can play dressup with the followers. When she is in your house, not following you, she will display her "normal" attire. If you tell her to follow you and pull out your sword, she switchs to whats in her inventory. Keep in mind that followers can only carry a few things as well, so giving them heavy armor means they can't hold as much loot for you. I plan on making myself a full set of Draedric armor when I find the hearts and giving her the Dragon Armor I currently have on. I don't understand why Dragon Armor is 100 BS though, when the Daedric stuff has High AC and is only a tiny bit heavier, and requires 90 BS. Oh well, it will be cool to have a full set of Dragon Armor on my Follower and Daedric on me. :P

Oh and yes, Im 110% sure they will use what u give them. Just strip them first and give them the set you want to wear, they usually pick the best weapon/armor then currently are holding to use in combat.

Lydia FTW! Who doesn't want their own personal Housecarl; should really be Huscarl imo; who is also HOT! I did almost swap her out for Illia the former Witch trainee and may do so at some point but I just couldn't bring myself to say goodbye to Lydia. We have been through so much together.

Funnily enough when I gave Uthgerd the Unbroken a full set of Exquisite Dwarven armour she equipped it immediately but seems to arbitrarily switch between that and her "bog standard" armour (Iron, Steel or whatever it is).

Just take the rubbish armour off her when she's equipped the good stuff

Lydia is seriously crap...She was always blocking my way.

My current dark elf companion is the priest of Azura... Aranea. She rocks and looks like frickin Wonder Woman due to a glitch on the 360 where she takes off her clothes at times. :celebration:

Yes but she still carries her old armor, thus decreasing her carry capacity.

Also, I mean as a first follower, early in the game Uthgerd is way better.

Later in the game I would rather have Brelyna or the mage from (i think) Riften for ranged support

Because she is carrying my burdens and I'm not about to let that stop. I still don't have a house. When I do, Lydia may have to resubmit her application.

Yeah I allready said that. But I don't really need to carry around much loot anyways. Blacksmithing is pretty good at keeping my currency at the point where I don't even need to loot stuff. I make dragon armor and sell it if I need money, which I don't. The ONLY thing I buy is Grand Soul gems, but when I can get 1k per dragon peice, who needs to waste time with loot? The games currency system is pointless. You are given the tools to make everything you need.

Yeah, I mostly use followers as portable storage (they're not too useful as combat distractions, even Uthgerd seems to prefer plinking with a bow over getting out her sword and shield and delivering a beatdown, and I have no interest in getting lip of Lydia every time I want her to tote some of my stuff.
