Why Skyrim was somewhat disappointing to me.

Post » Sun Jul 29, 2012 7:37 am

I agree! Skyrim is a really mixed bag. Some things are great and other things you seriously can't understand why they are. It seems Bethesda tried going for a bigger crowd and they sure were successful. I just hope Fallout 4 has more depth even if it won't be as big as Skyrim. I rather have like 30 awesome quests in Fallout 4 then 100's of shallow quests Skyrim has to offer. Some of Skyrim's quest are great but they get lost in the sea of shallow and repetitive quests. I think Skyrim's motto was go big or go home. Bethesda bit off more then they could chew or didn't have enough time to swallow it all.

I have to agree with the author on the storylines, they were atrocious. Isn't Bethesda's lead writer an ex-animator or something? It shows.

I'm yet to try Morrowind. But I do like how it sounds ( Heard your choices actually have impact on the world, for example, )

It's questionable if it's better than the first Witcher, IMO.

But The Witcher 2 blows Skyrim out of the water. Gameplay? TW2 has a far more flexible and fun combat than Skyrim.

Graphics? Absolutely. Can't even compare both.

Story? TW2 is one of the best stories I've ever seen.

Voice acting? There's a couple voices better in Skyrim, but the majority of the characters in TW2 are voiced better than Skyrim's.

The ONLY thing Skyrim beats TW2 in is the lasting appeal, and as the article said...

Read the article BTW?
Yeah I read the article, and I agree with most of the points it made...but I'm still holding out for Skyrim to reach its full potential. Its got a few dlcs and patches coming its way, and Bethesda will work the kinks out given enough time.

Gamer Limit apparently didn't like Witcher 2 though, thats what I took from their http://gamerlimit.com/2012/04/gamer-limit-review-the-witcher-2-enhanced-edition/ anyway.

Edit: Erm...it was for the enhanced edition...is the normal edition better?

I'd ignore that review lol. Why not try TW2?

And as to Skyrim, You can't really fix combat , bad story or boring quests. Because the boring quests are the greater chunk of the game's content, you can't fix a story after it's been told, and because the very structure of the combat is pretty bad.

If the stories weren't so bad and spells were back from the other games, along with more armor, I probably wouldn't be complaining about the combat.

Sure. It sounds interesting.

A guy can still hope for an overhaul dlc, right? We got crossbows in Dawnguard, and a more 3 dimensional companion.

This being a 'laughing discussion about its flaws' will probably not turn out that way. More than likely this'll turn into an argument like many have before.

I haven't played any of the previous TES games, I found this to be a great game. The bugs and flaws didn't bother me since I've played Fallout before and therefore are used to it.

No.

The Enhanced edition adds new content and a sizable amount of bug fixes.

College of Winterhold:
hey bro guess what
you found a big floaty rock
archmage is dead
now you're the archmage
and you didn't even use spells

Companions:
hey bro guess what
you're a werewolf
and the harbinger is dead
so i guess you can be the new one

Civil War:
hey bro guess what
attack these cities in quick succession
even though we didn't have the will or manpower to take them before
suddenly we win

Main Quest:
hey bro guess what
fus
ro
dah
dragons dragons dragons
blades
kill alduin
you win but dragons are still here for some reason

Daedric Quests:
hey bro guess what
do this little quest
here have this artifact
it's really not even all that great

I haven't finished the Thieves Guild questline yet, so I can't say for that one. But still, the questlines are extremely quick and not very well thought-out.

They have to chose, massive open world, or focused immersive story.

Pretty much. I don't really go into sandbox/exploration games expecting a great story - I go into them expecting a great sandbox.

Which is why....
New Vegas had both. Granted, the world wasn't as big as Skyrim's (or at least I don't think it is) and the game is much, much less focused on dungeon crawling, but still.

...New Vegas disappointed me, and I prefer FO3 to it. Because I went into it (since it was made using the FO3 engine & assets) expecting a similar exploration game. And instead got a generally linear story-based game with a somewhat boring worldspace. And yeah - that's at least partially my fault, for expecting a Beth-style sandbox. Doesn't change the fact that I haven't felt the desire to play FO:NV again, while I keep loading FO3 (and Oblivion) back up.

(and it's not even an issue of not liking linear/story games - I love JRPGs and Bioware games, for instance. It's mostly a case of going into it expecting a different game. And because my expectations were so different from what I got, it's colored my perceptions of the game ever since. Probably not fair, but that's life. Ah, the mysteries and silliness of the human mind.)

----

But anyway - that's why Skyrim didn't disappoint me (not really). Because it is basically what I expected it to be. I didn't expect it to be a Bioware game, or even an Obsidian game. I expected it to be a Bethesda game, and I got exactly that.

Might as well add a Dark Brotherhood one:

Dark Brotherhood:
hey bro guess what
kill kill kill
kill
kill more
whoops everyone's dead
kill the emperor
good job you're the leader 'cause everyone's dead

In fairness, at least the Dark Brotherhood presented you with a good reason for your promotion. Becoming leader of any of the other guilds is an absolute joke.

No, the thieves guild had you do atleast 50 missions, a bunch of special missions, become a servant of Nocturane, and you had to kill the old guild master.

Yes but the story of the Thieves guild is a giant plot hole with some storyline snippets on the side, so it doesn't count.

I kind of have to agree with you
the skyrim branch was pretty corrupt due to whats her name trying to play night mother
once the night mother came to the sanctuary and hearing astrid say that her word is law i realised that the main issue would be corruption in the sanctuary (which seems to be a DB trend)

Okay yes it was VERY confusing, but I found the thieves guild to be better then the companions...

No, there's a difference between confusing and being a giant plot hole.
Confusing implies it actually DOES make sense, but the message doesn't quite get across so fans misinterpret it and think it doesn't make sense. Vault 34 of New Vegas is confusing; pretty sure that it actually is perfectly sound (I think), but it took us ages to figure out what happened when in it's storyline.
Being a giant plot hole is when nothing makes any damn sense and the audience CANNOT make sense of it. Karliah herself might as well be a personification of plot holes.
