Why the Thalmor?

Post » Wed Jan 30, 2013 9:48 am

Why demonize the Thalmor? Every one I've met is a stuck up asswipe and I'm pretty sick of it. I can understand the Aldmeri Dominion being a little egotistic, but every single Thalmor? No wonder Nords hate the Mer so much. But why do they have to be this way? I once made a Thalmor character. I tried to make people like him. He was a pacifist, and he helped people and threw coins around on the street. But people still hated him so my precious Thalmor, poor poor Julio, jumped off a cliff, realizing all his efforts, his entire existence, was utterly pointless. If Julio can change, I have hope for the Thalmor, even Ancano. (Provided you haven't *BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP* yet)

Well, when your end-game goal is the complete re-write of existance...It's kind of hard to paint yourself as anything else, really. The Thalmor are pretty much dedicated to proving they're the best thing to happen since spreadable butter.
I mean, it doesn't exactly leave room for much.

The Thalmor were made to be enemies. They are naturally hated. Bunch of arrogant punks.

Also...if you say your character is a Thalmor...that means you're hip to the cause...But also saying your a pacifist and being all nice...you are essentially just giving candy to a child you intend on killing later on...That's actually a worse insult than an executioner saying "Look on the bright side, it only hurts a little" to the condemned.

from what ive found high elves are usually described as self absorbed. egotistic. narcissistic. etc etc. they are basically a race that is generally very full of themselves. nords are a right pain in the ass though.

Geez, Skyrim seems to have really left a lot of people sour on Nords. They've gone from being viewed as jovial drunks to backwards racist morons in the eyes of the fanbase. I mean, the entire race being written off as "not much better" than the Thalmor, who are written to be very cut-and-dry "evil"?

I've always chalked up their attitudes to their long life spans. Why try making friends with some human if they are going to die of old age before you are even close to middle-aged?

The Thalmor are a political faction of the Aldmeri Dominion. While many are Altmer, not all Altmer are Thalmor.

There's a difference between http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Ancano, and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Viarmo.

The first is Thalmor. The second is a teacher. Both are Altmer.

One commits genocide and wants to unmake the world. The other writes songs and wants you to sing in key.

this. the thalmor is the FACTION of elves (not just the RACE of altmer or high elves but also includes the bosmer/wood elves) that tried to take cyrodil etc etc. Thalmor, while a majority are Altmer, is not the name of the race.

At least it's not as bad as the misconceptions caused by Bethesda's usage of the term "Imperial(s)" throughout Skyrim. They really need to change the name of the race to something else.

Well there is an Ex-Thalmor in Falkreath. The priest there will ask you to find a journal of his that he lost, after you recover it if you read it the book tells you about the things the did and in the war. He was a pretty bad dude but for one reason or another he wants to repent.

I have not done the favor in a few months so my info might be a little off but that's what I remember about it.

Same reason Bioware intentionally writes the Batarians in a way we're supposed to hate them; Somebody has to be the "bad guy."

They are hated because they are better than every one else. It's only natural for slaves to hate their masters.

I don't think he was Thalmor. The journal sounds like he was just a mage in the Dominion's army.

Don't even compliment them with the term "slave." They're good enough for extinction, and nothing else.

In Morrowind and Oblivion, as an Imperial, other races would refer to you as a "Cyrodil" in passing.

And yet I see nobody on these forums use that or Cyrod other than people friendly with the lore. :sadvaultboy:

And, wait, did they? In Oblivion? I don't remember that.

There is a good chance of that, as I said its been awhile since I read it and I kind of like the idea of there being a Thalmor that just said this is messed up and walked away. Sometimes we see what we want to.
