Will Fallout 4's new dialogue system help or hurt the story?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 6:16 am

I don't mind a voice protagonist. THAT part I think will help the story. Vague descriptions are bad, but they give you a basic idea of what you're going to be saying. (Except 'Sarcasm', though I noticed that it usually comes out as a joke instead of hostile) My main issue is being limited to four options. And from what I've heard, you can't backtrack in a conversation; it's all progressive.

Odd. I've heard that the game has a fair amount of consequences, since you can't backtrack conversations.

Doesn't really matter if you can't backtrack conversations when you can just save beforehand. If someone is going to backtrack, then they're going to save-scum too.

I'm talking about actual consequences from actions and choices in the game, where I have heard that very, very little of what you do actually impacts stuff. If you couldn't backtrack in Skyrim or Fallout 3, do you think that would have magically added C&C into the game? You could blow up an entire city in Fallout 3 and there were no consequences from it. Hell they even made sure Moira survives!

I feel that the new dialogue system will hurt the game for me. A voiced protagonist in an RPG is hit or miss depending upon how the voice acting is done. I always imagine my voice in my head with the lines.

So one, it's someone else speaking the line. Part of the immersion is that I am the character and not a puppet master.

Two, I only get a glimpse of what my character may say? This makes the dialogue feel like it's out of my control except for a button press. I have not played the game yet so I don't know if I will love or hate it.

If it were possible, an option for us to go through dialogue would be to actually speak the lines ourselves into a mic.

That would be awesome.

Now you’re Commander 111, and this is my favorite town in the Commonwealth.

I am ok with a voiced protagonist. But i needs to be done right . See TW3. This one word reply nonsense and locked dialogue trees are troubling. To me, it seems obvious that Bethie is trying to cater to the "meaningful dialogue is boring" crowd. I hope that I am wrong, but fear that I am correct.

Todd Howard made light of seeing players click past dialog in his George mason University speech. I assumed this was coming.

I can see it now.

Random Questgiver: "You have two choices. I can tell you about the treasure in location x, or the treaure in location z."

Player Character: "Alright, tell me about the treasure in location x."

Random Questgiver: "Unfortunately, that treasure has already been plundered by raiders. Sorry."

Player Character: "Damn! Okay, then tell me about the treasure in location z."

Random Questgiver: "Sorry, I can only tell you about one of them, and you [censored] up."

I guess I'll have to get used to saving before every single conversation from every single NPC in the game. I guess that could be where the 400 hours of playtime originated from.

This could just be me but I feel like that projected number is getting lower. I remember hearing "500" with Oblivion and I think there was "500" with Fallout 3 and Skyrim as well.

No it was + 200 in Skyrim I don't remember in Oblivion. And by the way Who doesn't have 500 hours combined playthrough in Skyrim? Heck my main is more than 200. Within expore each single cave.

I think the new one is very unique and could possibly open some cool oppurtunities, but you will really have to wait.

Mainly just that... Lamenting having a detailed script, and seeing players click past it to find out who to go shoot. (More or less)

Your pink text is hurting your story. I can't read the text on my phone because the background is white. ;)

You hit the nail on the head with this deduction. Neither the story itself or any NPC interaction are likely to support any nuance or allow you to chose according to a personality type (outside of the dichotomous "Yes, I will help you" or "No, I will kill you" options). Which makes me sad. :(

This is a nightmare. I am in hell. Someone please wake me up. Why did they have to go and [censored] fallout. They literally did this to make it easy for people who are too dumb to read. (IE for children or morons) I would have bought this game on release! This just crushed me, was really looking forward to playing the new one, but it looks like I'll be waiting for a discounted GOTY or passing on it entirely. This isn't fallout anymore. This is mass effect in the fallout universe.

Yeah what they are describing sounds horrible.

Has it much todo whats in the actual game? I don't think so, but I have taken the risk of big spoilers to form a opinion in this matter.

I have to say, this dialogue system, if it is as it seems in the spoilers, is proof positive that Bethie thinks gamers are dumb or have ADD. Look at TW3. Whatever you say about it, it sold over 6.5 million copies without losing its soul.

I have pre-ordered FO4 and will play it and enjoy it (probably mod it). But sadly, only as a competent shooter (at best). FO is no longer a RPG, from what I have seen in the spoilers.

Not a fan of it, only bright side I did think of was that we can pipboy and use items that can boost our stats to unlock some chat options but I doubt that will be worth while.

I agree. Fans have waited 7 years for this game and the more info comes out, the less enthusiastic I am about the game. I'm praying the story is well written. That's all I want. Don't need the T-60 tank, the jet pack, the settlements or the 700 weapon mods. No need to worry about FO5, I would bet every dime I have Fallout Online is next...

This 'new' dialogue system, first introduced to us by BioWare in their Mass Effect series, is total garbage. Dunno why Beth decided to ape it. Perhaps in an attempt to hide how weak their writing is.

Ain't gonna happen while TESO is still running and that's not going away anytime soon. And if it closes down, then I very much doubt they will re-try an MMO, their heyday passed by now and subs-formula isn't working anymore except WoW. The chances of this happening are slim.
