Will Fallout 4's new dialogue system help or hurt the story?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 1:46 pm

So this post comes from a similar thread I found on reddit, but I figured you guys would appreciate this discussion as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/3radbe/will_fallout_4s_new_dialogue_system_help_or_hurt/

I was going to fully repost it here, but unfortunately, this website wont let me post images, so please check the link and read the post there (it's mostly told through examples with images).

h

What effect do you think the new dialogue system will have on the way the story is told, as well as the complexity of the story telling?

Edit: The post I was linking to got deleted, but in short it was comparing the amount of dialogue options in Fallout 3 and New Vegas to the Mass Effect style 4 option system in Fallout 4.

An example of the differences between Fallout 3 / NV's dialogue and 4's can be found in this image: http://puu.sh/l7nzi/053c1f9458.jpg

Honestly can't tell you. Get back to me in about eight or nine days (as of this post, subtract a day for each day leading up to release, for clerical accuracy).

The writing is still trash so i don't think it'll matter.

Pretty sure none of the images are leaked. Only one image is from Fallout 4, and it's the same footage we saw at E3

I think the new dialogue system will improve the story Bethesda is trying to tell, but make it a bit more difficult to express ourselves through dialogue. I think it might strengthen the story for a single playthrough if the voice acting is good, but given how voices protagonists always bring forth limitations to player agency I feel repeated playthroughs will be somewhat less interesting. Also, quests added via mods will seem jarring considering the player wont have any voiced lines.

Well, Captain Obvious, you have pointed out that writing is not BGS strong point. Nothing new to report there. However, there have been some decent writing in past BGS games, and with FO 3 being the first BGS FO game, I would imagine that there will be improvements in the writing department. Can't really say it is "still trash" unless you have played through the game. Writing is something you have to experience for yourself, and a 5 minute YouTube video isn't going to cut it. But, IF the writing does blow, then there will be plenty of FO fans who criticize this, me included.

I admit that I'm disappointed with the new, dumbed down, Mass Effect 3 dialogue wheel compass.

But if the dialogue system and a lack of weapon/armor degradation are the only things I don't like about Fallout 4, I can live with it.

Also, mods. :icecream:

But how many of those dialogue options actually led to anything? As I recall, you had even more dialogue options in Morrowind, with the caveat that the responses were often completely useless. Personally, I care more about the flow of the conversation a heck of a lot more than I care about how many things I can say. Sometimes, the paucity of options in the Mass Effect dialogue could get frustrating, but not nearly as frustrating as navigating a conversation with a ton of pointless options. I don't care about the time you saw a purple deathclaw, Steve, I just want to know where the darn general store is!

For me it will probably help as i find a voiced protagonist much more engaging so bethesda would have to do an absolutely terrible job with the dialogue system to turn the positive that is a voiced protagonist into a negative.

OHHHH WAIT A SEC, if i remember correctly Fallout 3 and NV display everything u can said. Probably and on a system like Mass Effect, Dialogue is on layers, like Click A open 4 more option one of those options is to go back to the preview 4 options.

So the really comparison should be made on 2 similar NPC AKA guards or shopkeepers. I hope u guys understand what im trying to say.

I prefer the voiced protagonist so ill enjoy it no matter what i even enjoy the reactions to things like if you try to pick a lock you cant open yet your character comments on it saying he/she cant open it yet.. i dunno i just like it.

The writing is horrible and the quests are quite uninspiring. Morrowind was the last well written game.

Most people play to shoot crap, rp, and enjoy the open world.

Fallout WILL be awesome and pretty fun. I don't think dialouge will help in a positive or a negative way. It will just be new.

Such bull, Oblivion was excellent, Skyrim to, though story wise Oblivion was superior. I thought Fallout 3 had amazing writing as well, beyond companions.

Hrmm.. I guess we have different opinions. Oblivion was a bit cliche for me.

Usually if I care about what happens to characters the writing is solid. I didn't really care what happened to any characters in skyrim or oblivion.

They were absolutely fantastic and fun though. I played oblivion an insane amount.

I'm skeptical at best about both a voiced protagonist and the possible dialogue problems it could cause. I'll further my opinion on this based on what I see.

We will probably be able to make determinations about TES VI based on the directions of Fallout 4 as well, IMO.

The voice acting in Oblivion is what did it for me. Its really hard to say it was cliche in my opinion... These guys are the video game fantasy kings. I thought Oblivion was really fresh and new. Though I am speaking about a time when I was a younger lad and Oblivion was my first open-world game and RPG, so there may be some bias.

Yeah nostalgia does that. I like some 90s songs that are probably horrible but they bring back good memories so I love them.

I remember Bethesda games more fondly than any other game I have ever played (except star wars galaxies).

Oblivion voice acting was great I agree, I just never could get too much into the story.

But honestly, name me one game (and I hope I will know what your talking about) that could go toe-to-toe with Oblivion/Fallout 3 that was released the same time they were, and in the same genre of course, and even have a chance at beating them at... anything really.

Of course no game can beat them overall. Bethesda games for me are always the best games of all time!

I just found myself caring more about characters in dragon age origins, the old mass effect games, ect. They had a back story and personality as well as consequences. The stories were very well written.

But I agree oblivion and fallout 3 were amazing. Morrowind though is still slightly better. Oblivions arena was epic though (except for that dumb little adoring fan)

My crystal ball is in the shop.

But in BGS games I don't really role play.
I play as myself.
I look at the written response choices with my own inflections and attitude. Imagining how -I- would say them.

Verbal responses would be, to me, like living in another person's body with me just being a bystander.

Seems to me that this may be a concession to our poor educational system.

Ahhh yes.... BioWare. My other favorite RPG developer. They do have the best characters in thr biz. Lets not forget Bioshock 1 either. It dominated as well.
