Veronica Lake was intense.

Damn, beat me to it. But yeah, definitely Veronica Lake.

Others include http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rita_Hayworth and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_Tierney.

I did wonder if even HL2 might be an obscure reference!

Hedley Lamarr was a villain in Blazing Saddles; the actress was called Hedy. edit: yeah, I had to look it up: I knew I'd heard the name somewhere, but couldn't for the life of me remember where...

In the movie he constantly has to keep correcting everyone saying, Its hedley!.

Looking through http://www.moviemaidens.com/ list, I think the women from the 50s were superior in terms of aesthetics.

Edit: Having said that, Lauren Bacall was quite pretty.

Everyone looks better in black and white.
Evolution fortunes the attractive, so it's only science that the world is more attractive today.

I personally prefer modern celebrities, but I think exposure determines what we find attractive. After all there is some form of universal 'attractive' look that we mostly adhere too preferring.

Yes please! http://i.fanpix.net/images/orig/s/a/sagr9rh8b9wrb8w9.jpg Although I think Clift would be classed as a 50s actor.

The difference with alot of modern actors and actresses alot are botoxed, siliconed, had nips and tucks in locations i dont want to know, the difference was in the 30's or 40's you got a soft focus lens or a peice of tissue paper over the lens, and in alot of the cases what you saw was what you got, unlike hollywood nowadays. Plus the male actors were like the guy next door, there were more than a fair few that were in WW2 and not sitting behind a desk, and alot of those guys actually looked the part, unlike the stable of pretty boys they churn out of the mill now, perfect hair, perfect skin, toned and tannned.

I'm studying A Streetcar Named Desire as part of my English A Level, this includes watching the film, which features Vivien Leigh as Blanche. Although it is the most depressing thing I have ever read or watched, Vivien is amazing as Blanche. Despite how fragile and unstable Blanche is I can't help but find her quite pretty.

I think you've fallen victim to older films. They can make just about anyone look gorgeous with all the soft, glowy filters and lighting that was so often used.

No, There are certainly unnatractive people in old films. By no means do I find all women in 40's films attractive.

There was something about the way that actors and actresses from the 40's through the 50's carried themeselves though. Not sure whether it's a sense of dignity or something about their attitude or poise but compared to the braying headaches that we're oversaturated with now I'd choose Ingrid Bergman, Lauren Bacallm Gregory Peck or Laurence Olivier over them all. Well... perhaps I still have that soft spot for Sandra Bullock :D

The thing is that the soft focus techniques from those times create a sense of unobtainability, as in:

"These ladies are completely out of your leauge buddy.."

which by it's very definition, is hot.

Gimmi a http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JZh5KmkFSPM/Ti9DB-a3Y2I/AAAAAAAABNs/j7DoFKGGTxY/s1600/lucy8.jpg and I will happily sell my soul..

Same goes for the men, though I'd stretch the time frame to include the 50s as well.

Yeah, Old school guys are damn cool. Serious man crush on guys like James Dean and Bogart etc.

I'm 19, but I love the dress sense from back in the day. Everyone wore crisp suits and hats all the time. I wish it was like that now. :(
