Would orcs exist in a game like TES if it wasn't for Lord Of

Just out of curosity. But would orcs exist without a cinematic trilogy like Lord Of The Rings, and would they look like that.
If it was, i'm certainly happy about that because im going to eventually play one. (----- AND I love 'Lord Of The Rings' by the way, favourite trilogy ever. Then behind that comes 'Back To The Future' ------- Not Relevant to question.)

I also Know its been written by Tolkien in great description not just the movies.

They would go by a different name, but then again tolkien did invent modern fantasy fiction pretty much.. so I'm not sure if TES would exist in the first place.

Elder Scrolls had Orcs before the cinematic trilogy.

However, Elder Scrolls fantasy and almost all high fantasy is based somewhat on Tolkien.

A lot of fantasy over the last 3 decades has it's roots in LOTR. It inspired what we know today as the modern fantasy genre.

That being said I don't know. It would be interesting to see what the world of fantasy fiction would look like without LOTR influence.

I voted maybe, but then I read you're post and i recalled my vote and said yes :P. The cinamatic trilogy has 0% effect on there being orcs in TES or not since they were in before the movies existed. Now if you take the books, you might have a point.

I am just not sure if LOTR was the first to ever mention orcs, perhaps they are part of folklore somewhere.

I think it's wrong to say "cinematic trilogy" as LoTR was already on top 10 of most read novels before the movies came.

He said he loved Lotr. And everyone who loves lotr know that it is a book-trilogy. I don't think you would have known how orcs looked like before it came up on moviescreens. I know I didn't.

You're mostly right. It would be more accurate to say he invented High Fantasy (which would be Fantasy with Orc, and Elves, and other such things). Robert E Howard who wrote Conan and several other Sword and Sorcery."Low" Fantasy books inspired Tolkien.

They would certainly exist without the movie, but had the book never been written, probably not. The Lord of the Rings books date back to the 1950s. They defined a good deal of modern fantasy tropes. Sure, Orcs and Elves and Trolls and Goblins and magicians already existed in Norse and Celtic mythology, but the books made the world at large aware of them in a serious context instead of just legends and fairy tales.

The movies are kinda indifferent, but orcs first came from Tolkien's fiction so i am going to have to say while we might have something alike to them today, or some adaptation of ogres or goblins, no, we would not have orcs.

D&D, takes a fair bit from the Tolkien books.

And these guys had pictures of Orcs well before the cinematic versions. Although Half-Orcs (Human/Orc) is much closer to the Cinematic Version of them in terms of looks.

D&D orcs Look fairly similar to TES orcs IMO.

No. Perhaps some similar monster by definition and appearance that has been around since at least the Dark Ages (Trolls, goblins, giants) but the word "Orc" wasn't used either in context or not at all before Tolkien created them. I could be wrong, orcs could have already existed in mythology, but I don't think so. If I am correct, though, the "Orcs" of the Elder Scrolls, or any other fantasy for that matter, would not exist with that word. They would probably be called Goblins or Hobgoblins.

You do know Elder Scrolls is older then the LotR films, and before that hardly anyone ever read the book. I highly doubt Elder Scrolls is based on the book at all.

TES was based on D&D, so it depends on whether D&D got ideas from the LotR books. It probably did.

Many things wouldn't exist in Elder Scrolls and most other RPGs if it wasn't for LOTR.
