XBOX Controller FTW

This seems like the best place to ask this. I have a PS3 and a gaming PC, and I play Skyrim on my PC. Is it possible to use my PS3's controller to play Skyrim on my PC? I'd like to try it out.

I would guess there is a way but no where near as easy as the xbox controller due to the shared Microsoft thing, and the xbox controller is already in the game options on PC. I would think just getting a cheap wired xbox controller would be worth the grief, but if you really want to try I would start here:

These opinions are not surprising when you consider that the game was specifically designed for controller use.

That said, mouse and keyboard is still better despite all the effort gamesas put into gimping them. I have tried controllers on games like these and hated it. Controllers are ok for 3rd person only games but insanely frustrating for 1st person games. Especially ones with large numbers of hot keys like TES.

You can get a cheap decent wired aftermarket xbox controller.. $30 is what I paid at Walmart last night. If you're in the States possibly even cheaper. The one I got was AX.1 Afterglow. Although it does have quite a few led's in it.. it's rather bright.

“tried on games like these”.... you should try it on this game

“insanely frustrating”.... evidence you haven’t tried it on this game...

“large numbers of hot keys”... this is a valid reason not to use a controller based on character type. I should have specified I am currently playing a sword & board character with a minor in Archery... 2 hot keys and favorites menu with a controller makes gameplay very fast and fluid... I would assume a mage would really need more hot keys though the favorites menu can really be fast once you are use to the controller...

I was mouse & keyboard from 1996 (Baldur’s Gate) till 2003 when I switched to Xbox. I just finished tweaking my settings on my new gaming PC and after 20 hours of trying to play with mouse and keyboard I installed the receiver and tried my controller again.

If you are a die-hard PC gamer, and haven’t tried the xbox controller, you are seriously missing out.

You can not move/look naturally without dual anolog sticks. Plus vibration is cool. Archery is equal.

Only downside is it seems to disable my keyboard... was hoping for more than 2 hotkeys....

There is a mod to add more hotkeys to the controller so you can get that and the console key never disables so you can still easily debug while using the controller. Yes I am a hardcoe PC gamer but if that is your reason for not owning a controller for PC well hate to say it but....GG welcome to port hell...adapt or die.

Aside that this is not an MMO and hotkeys over favorites save zero combat time...period. You can use up to 8 hotkeys with the Xbox Controller mod if you use more than that for Skyrim...sorry but you are such a noob.

I tried it on this game and I hate it. Sorry if I was unclear.

As for hotkeys, two is not nearly enough for any character build I can envision. In fact, 8 is too limiting. I should be able to map 9 and 0 as well. Are you faster and more fluid with your 2 as opposed to my 8? I wouldn't bet money on it. I play with a game board that puts the number keys right above WASD in an arc. I can probably hit my favorite 4 keys as fast as you can hit your favorite 2 and be maybe just a tad slower for the other 4.

First of all, that claim is wrong. Second, some of us despise breaking immersion to root around in menus.

I concur, lack of hotkeys is a negative to controller... but it seems there are some mods in existence to mitigate the issue. As I said my current character rarely uses hotkeys (I don’t like downing potions during combat). Can’t think of much reason for many hot keys while sword & boarding...

Ahhhh RDR. Best game of this entire generation. Skyrim not included, as Elder Scrolls is more than a game, it's an essence, a legend... a way of life.

I play Skyrim with a controller too. Only Skyrim though... I can't see myself playing BF3 without a mouse.

I use a mod that lets me use 8 hotkeys with my controller and it works out great for me. Skyrim works really well with a controller as long as you are not stuck with just the 2 hotkeys.

Shhh! Don't mention RDR around here! Beth won't allow any evidence that open-world games and technical competence can happen at the same time.

So I suppose you're a game-programming genius then, I wonder if you could post up some of the stuff you've done recently? ;)

Yeah, I'm not even sure how you even decided it was worth the time to post this.

And the controller plugs into the PC but does not actually go inside of it. It'd be rather difficult to operate at that point.
My point of that was if someone is looking for a cheap controller, the one I mentioned is decent but if you don't want a bright glow coming from below you shouldn't bother with this one.

most immersive shooter IMO is Metro 2033, you never enter a menu when away from the hubs. Most immersive RPG is The Witcher 2 (Which actually works quite well with a controller, I cant deny that)

however I'm seeing alot of comments about how keyboards constrain movement... I'm typing this as I sit leaned back twirling in an office chair. wireless keyboards allow for alot of movement.

I believe you that there are many “die-hards” that wouldn’t consider it as I used to be close minded and thought mouse + keyboard was superior. Not only is dual anolog easier to move, strafe, and look exactly where you want... the comfort of using a controller for extended sessions far outweighs the comfort of the niciest gaming keyboard...

I played Oblivion on the 360 and I've tried Skyrim on PS3. In my experience, the mouse&keyboard is the only way to go. Although I will say that using the controller is more comfortable than the keyboard&mouse.

I used a mouse exclusively for all PC games, until I gave the 360 controller for Skyrim a go. Apart from reduced hotkeys, I find it so much more fluid and nicer to use than a mouse and keyboard for this game. But hey, it's all opinion.

360 controller is so much easier. And if you want more hotkeys on it, you can find a mod for that. I got a mod that lets me have 8 hotkeys on the D-pad.
