XBOX Controller FTW

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 2:34 am

I was mouse & keyboard from 1996 (Baldur’s Gate) till 2003 when I switched to Xbox. I just finished tweaking my settings on my new gaming PC and after 20 hours of trying to play with mouse and keyboard I installed the receiver and tried my controller again.

If you are a die-hard PC gamer, and haven’t tried the xbox controller, you are seriously missing out.

You can not move/look naturally without dual anolog sticks. Plus vibration is cool. Archery is equal.

Only downside is it seems to disable my keyboard... was hoping for more than 2 hotkeys....

Not at all, I think you'll find that most pc diehards would not even consider a controller, and I can state from experience that they're not missing out on anything.

I believe you that there are many “die-hards” that wouldn’t consider it as I used to be close minded and thought mouse + keyboard was superior. Not only is dual anolog easier to move, strafe, and look exactly where you want... the comfort of using a controller for extended sessions far outweighs the comfort of the niciest gaming keyboard...

I posted here because it is a specific issue for Skyrim PC players...

good luck using more than two hotkeys...

I switched from X-Box to PC, and bought a gamepad to smooth the transition... I much prefer keyboard and mouse, and if I want smooth character movement I'll use a flight stick for character control thank you.

Also that quip about it being easier to look exactly where you want with a controller made my day. There's a reason hardcoe FPS groups are on PC, unbridled accuracy, if you miss, its because you miss, not because aim assist dragged you reticule away from the target because it decided to track someone behind a wall.

This is an issue. I don’t understand why the keyboard had to be disabled to use my controller. Must be a work around for that?

Do flight sticks have 2 anolog controls? If so that would be the same IMO.

One last reason I realized the controller felt better in this game.... the whole Left Trigger = left hand Right Trigger = right hand adds immersion IMO. Controlling the actions of BOTH hands with my right hand on the mouse didn’t feel as immersive.

I know there are strong opinions on both sides, but just wanted to encourage anyone that hasn’t tried it to give it a go... I was really surprised.

I play with Keyboard and Mouse. I tried to go back to using a controller. It just felt....too sluggish. A keyboard and mouse is much more accurate, I find.

Though I do use a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Battlefield 3 Edition mechanical keyboard and a Razer Naga mouse. Very comfortable for me.

Most keys still work with Skyrim Script Extender's KeyPress code, thankfully :) Mod added hotkeys will work this time without unplugging the battery.

I also use an XBox controller, at least when I'm actually playing and not testing a mod or whatever. Never had a want for an XBox, but the controller sure is nice.

Im a PC diehard and typically hate consoles and their controllers. However, using the controller for Skyrim is so much better. Mouse & Keyboard integration was nothing but an afterthought from Bethesda. This game was intended for controller, evidenced by the clunky interface.

I'm on the Xbox, but I was a PC gamer for years. A dual-stick controller cannot compete with a mouse in properly-designed first-person action games, where you are a humanoid player (as opposed to, say, a car). Mouse movement is the best anologue of human movement yet devised. A little thumbstick is a laughable substitute. Are you're telling me that Skyrim does better with a controller than a KB+mouse due to design issues? That would be shameful.

A controller will never have the 'quick aim' accuracy that a mouse has, but some games just work better with a controller.

Why anybody would play games like Assassins Creed, Fable 3 etc with kb+mouse i don't understand when a controller is ideally suited for these games. (360 pad is the best controller ever imo).

Skyrim 'should' work fine with kb+mouse, but it's a console port, and a sloppy one at that.

I used a mouse exclusively for all PC games, until I gave the 360 controller for Skyrim a go. Apart from reduced hotkeys, I find it so much more fluid and nicer to use than a mouse and keyboard for this game. But hey, it's all opinion.

Yeah, I love using the 360 controller. It is so damn comfortable and natural feeling. Plus, I can just kick back and adjust anyway I like when gaming for long periods. Where as when I use kb/mouse I feel stuck in one position. I support this thread :drag:

True, but “quick aim” accuracy is not needed in an RPG like Skyrim. Even as an archer I had zero issues with aiming. I can imagine FPS like MW3/Battlefield would be better with a mouse.

Okay, gotta chime in. First, I'd have to say that I don't see why a possible solution for players who may have a problem using keyboard and mouse on PC shouldn't be posted in the PC hardware and software issues forum. This seems to be the proper place for this discussion.

Secondly, I'm a long time xbox person. I finally decided that I had to try these "mods" out so bought Oblivion for PC and loved it. So now that I finally bought a newer computer I had to get Skryim (even though I bought it back in November for Xbox). So last night I bought a cheap wired Xbox controller and absolutely love it. I will say it's not for everyone though. A friend of mine bought Skyrim for his PC rather than his Xbox because of the improved accuracy for archery with using the mouse. I on the other hand find it uncomfortable. I openly admit though that's probably large in part because of my desk setup. If I had everything more ergonomically correct it'd probably be better. I'll probably go back and forth.

I was glad to see that it was a heck of a lot easier to set up than some of the webpages I read made it out to be. Just downloaded the driver, plugged in the controller and I was off to the races.

Skyrim is made for consoles and controllers, not for mouse & keyboard (half-baked console port). :brokencomputer:
On a proper PC game, the mouse & keyboard combo is the best. :mage:

Subjective, Define "proper PC Game"

I think it's a well known fact that Skryim was designed for the console and just modified for PC rather than being designed for PC. So "proper PC game" in this context would be defined as a game designed for PC.
