My 11 year old nephew...

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 8:33 am

I'm going to guess he either won't get very far into the game, or won't enjoy the game as it was intended, or both.

But in the end this means more money for devs so I think its fine lol.

He did. He's a dutch native, is as proficient in English as my German dog and he's got the attention span of an archetypical Call of Duty addict. He called me to say he just got a new game, I asked him which one. He said 'modern warfare with swords'.

I know the Elders Scrolls franchise truly got mainstream attention since Oblivion, but is this one of the effects of all the streamlining? Or is this purely a result of the insane amounts of media attention this game has been getting, and is for the better? I know it's an utterly childish attitude of mine, and I love my obnoxious nephew all the same, yet somehow it annoys me tremendously that him and his anklebiter friends bought Skyrim. Irrational and childish, I know I know.

"Call of duty with swords" is just like any other insulting video game name (like cowadooty, world of Xcraft, etc): It
was created somewhere, on some online forum, to get a rise out of a player base.

I'm not going to go on an angry rant about it. Instead I'm just going to say that anyone that calls skyrim call of duty
with swords has yet to actually play either game.

Yeah seriously, sorry but what is wrong with your family, letting an 11 year old play this game?

The thought of an 11 year old playing through the dark brother hood and some other quest lines is kind of scary to say the least. No wonder more and more kids are F'd up these days.

Tell me about it, my nephew bought Assassin's Creed and I heard a fews days later that he tried to jump from the roof (on his school) onto the other roof...

Well I guess you'd know what happened to him, broke his leg and 2 ribs.

They might get those ideas from video games or movies, but they absolutely would not believe them to be real if they weren't mentally ill.

The problem is , how many kids play these games and "ARE" mentally ill? The last time I checked they don't screen you for mental illness before allowing you play.

Not to mention the huge amount of kids that are being dosed with legal mind altering drugs that supposedly makes them better, and although the media is will never mention it (due to the huge amount of money they make on pharmacutical advertisemants) most of those kids who did commit terrible murders were on 1 or more prescribed medications for their mental illness.

People who believe violent fiction will cause real-world violence. ->HA!<-

The "Federal" Reserve is more likely to cause real-world violence.

I grew up reading Stephen King. I had to look up what a tampon was when I read "Carrie".

I bet they're German, and they think the Nazis will rise from their graves as zombies to start a third world war if Swastikas are included in fiction media.

@ the guy above me: the parents are supposed to be there to notice their children are playing with dead birds like voodoo dolls. You can't expect the whole of fictional media creators to tailor their media to prevent crazy people from going mad. That isn't practical. Instead you should probably be criticizing the over-diagnosis of so-called "mental disorders" lack of proper personal therapy and support in favor of mind-numbing psychoactive pharmaceuticals.

The columbine guy was on drugs. Legal drugs, but I have tried them being 20-something. If I was gonna go postal and not have remorse, it would be on Lexapro or Paxil or Zoloft or something. Be real. Don't grope for weak associations when there are strong, obvious causalities sitting right as rain.

Nope, he just has bad tastes in game and thinks every game is based off CoD.
And Skyrim hasn't been mainstreamed as much as people make it out to be, your just going with the crowd.

The CoD fans don't browse the forums, so they can't offer suggestions or bother us.

I'd like to go on record and thank every major, minor, and yet unheard of holy deity for this.

I've been to call of duty forums. Utter chaos. It's as close to hades on earth as one can get. We do not
need those people in here.

I'm sorry, but that's a gross exaggeration. I've played every Elder Scrolls game since Daggerfall...
I've been playing them since Arena, if you're looking for a completely irrelevant pissing contest.

There's a difference between "dumb down" streamlining and streamlining for intuitiveness.
So you're going to tell me that: -

Having to look through alphabetically-sorted lists and selecting individual items, just to see their stats, is more intuitive than a simple inventory screen that displays all the relevant information at a glance?
There was anything unintuitive about having a character sheet and stats, in an RPG?
Being able to do alchemy in the wild and not at fixed tables is unintuitive?
Fun and useful spells like water walking and levitation were unintuitive? Come to think about it, I've not even seen a breath meter, seems like I can live under water indefinitely in this game.

These are only a few examples, I could go on all day long. I love the game, but it's been dumbed down.

Enjoy Elder Scrolls VI: Assassin's Creed. I am sure it will be an amazing game, but it won't be TES.

I wasnt much older when i bought morrowind...

But you should kick him in the face because of that "modern warfare with swords" comment.

The worst part is... its each time more my feelling about TES, its in par with Diablo first person.

And because of this phenomenom, there s eacxh time more lacks in gameplay mechanics...

Ho well i wonder what will be TES 6. Or better how dillutted will be....will they remove skills ? Or Will archery have a 30 arrow clip ? Maybe... no more main quest all will be guided by radiant engine....

Well at lest the todays consoles will have died se we ll probably see a more dense game in the gameplay and settings, no more capital cities with 35 citizens, and a civil war with main camps containg 1 captain, 3 soldiers and 2 guards as sentinels. This war has les combatant than a bar brawl on a thursday night.

It's annoying the demands some of the younger generation make. I don't know whether it's good or bad. The Good is that higher sales = higher chance of another TES came. The bad is that they may take out key elements that make an TES games a TES game due to the whining of the younger, shorter attention span, generation.

I couldnt agree more, plain and simple.

This is what people were saying when Xbox 360 was the lead platform for Oblivion. "It doesn't bother me, it won't affect the TES series."

Now we have Skyrim which, while it is an awesome game, it's been "streamlined" (read: Dumbed down) so much to suit a wider audience that it's become an action RPG more on par with Mass Effect than Morrowind. Mark my words, the next TES game is probably going to be and out-right first/third-person hack and slash action game with a better story, something like Assassin's Creed.

Streamlined?

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Skyrim is as good as ever. A more complex alchemy system. A more complex enchanting system. A smithing system. Shouts, several questlines, radiant AI and story, dragons, massive dungeons, countless types of enemies, more styles of combat, a legit spell system, etc etc.

Skyrim is in no way streamlined. It may be different, but that's what makes TES so great. Bethesda actually bothers to change the game with each iteration. Something we make fun of CoD for not doing. Yet, when a company DOES do it, they get some hate for it.

Well i guess i would be one of them since 3 was my favorite but iv never played any of the newer ones. If anything im more of a WOW/Rift fan but thats not a bad thing really. Im absolutely loving this game however the the only thing that bugs me is the watered down skill and lack of state placement for things like agility, intel and what not. I mean the new talent system is ok im just more of FO3/Marrowind kind of guy with the character development.

Back on topic though just because hes a COD junky dosnt mean that he might not develop a deep deep appreciation for the game in general. Hell he might even develop a taste for more complex RPG/Fantasy games latter on down the line. I think its a good thing hes taking a break from the FPS gun games to try something new out at least.

That's funny because Bethesda themselves said it was all the time prior to release.

It's funny, gamers have gotten a bad image from the media for quite a long time now and it's only recently being corrected. Yet gamers themselves have a tendency to classify fans of X game of having some sort of disorder. The irony!!!!!

Anyway I let my seven year old nephew play this game. He couldn't do much because the physics were just too hilarious to him, watching poor animals roll around dead took up a lot of his time. Also his reactions to NPCs were hilarious, like if they told him he would never defeat them and his responses were out loud and classic. Kids can be immersed into anything with their wild imaginations.

OH! [censored] JUST GOT REAL!

Because I don't agree with you, and think that Skyrim is still one of the most complex, deep, and least streamlined games on the market, I'm automatically a fan boy. Furthermore, my opinion isn't as important as yours, because I think differently.

You continue to insult my avatar. Calling the show a fad. Laughable, at best, due to the intense hate that fans of the show get. Yours is light-weight, and I'm surprised I'm even slightly bothered by it. To even consider getting anywhere near the show means your a homosixual, moron who's contributing to the devolution and destruction of humanity. At least, according to the idiots that don't even bother watching the show, but follow the crowd and hate it. The irony being that hating it is a fad MUCH more than liking it, which is the first argument of the haters.

Would you get pissed if somebody said only idiots and homosixuals play TES, and that it svcks, if the person hadn't even played the game, or seen any of it's content? That's the same thing as what 99% of the MLP haters do. I admit, I had the same exact mind-set, the difference being I finally bucked-up and watched the show. It turned out to be a very good show, with better character development and story than almost anything spewed out by Hollywood in our current day and age.

But, you know what? I'm not going to bother saying why it's such a good show. I'm not going to waste my time trying to say why, because you don't deserve a reason to watch the show.

How is removing spells dumbing it down?

Some people only choose to see what is removed or lessened and ignore what is added and expanded upon. For instance combat is much more involved and you can stumble upon many quests giving much more incentive to explore and talk to people.

Yes, absolutely, and now that you've decided to put it in such explicit terms I am beginning to think you lied outright about how long you've been playing the TES series. I am even beginning to doubt if you've played many RPGs to make such a bold statement.

Strike a nerve, did I? Come on, we both know it's just a fad, you probably don't even like it. Your ilk love trying to be "edgy", "ironic", and the centre of attention on every forum you go on and that's why this conversation is pretty much wrapped up now.

Oh, and where did I say anything about your sixuality? Defensive much?

Some people only choose to see what is removed or lessened and ignore what is added and expanded upon. For instance combat is much more involved and you can stumble upon many quests giving much more incentive to explore and talk to people.
I see everything that's added, and I love it. I am thoroughly enjoying the game and don't regret buying it, well, except the regret I have for buying it on PC since apparently Bethesda just want to spit in the faces of the people who got them where they are. I would have bought it for Xbox 360, had I known.

However, no matter how much I am enjoying the game, I am firmly of the view that the TES series is heading away from the RPG genre at breakneck speed. I will enjoy TES VI: Assassin's Creed, but I will miss real TES too.

Well duh, they changed something that happens to require less clicks, that always mean that the game is not an RPG anymore.

You only have to raise skills instead of raising attributes as well for the exact same thing in the end? Dumbed down no-RPG
