So you cant spare people, even if theyre begging for mercy

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 2:07 am

Ha Ha! Actually have a flip side to this one... had a Saber Cat start chasing me while I was on a horse. Started to outrun him.... passed some NPCs on the way and one said, "I'm not getting involved."

Saber Cat disagrees.

Those are the meanest bastards in all of Skyrim.

It's one of my few big complaints about Skyrim. Don't have NPCs beg for mercy if the player is unable to grant it.
It's goofy to have the same dopey pantomime acted out each time you get a bandit to low health.

It's like they're teasing us. "Sure, they'll beg for mercy. Then they'll stab you as soon as they recover."
Cruel, cruel devs...

I'm hoping for a mod eventually to flesh out this new begging mechanic. It would be cool to have the ability to actually spare people and have them just surrender. The way it is now is practically useless, they will get up an attack you anyways.

In Oblivion I had a mod that allowed you to demand surrender from enemies and have them become non-hostile if you accept, giving you fame points and an opportunity to extort coin from them in exchange for the surrender. It worked really well with my merciful Paladin of Stendarr.
Oh, sure. The life of a Paladin and extortion go hand-in-hand.

I betrayed a redguard woman to a mercenary so that I could lure the mercenary away from his 6 friends (to help the woman). He paralyzes her, I kill him, then she gets up and starts attacking me. I really wish there was a way to make people less aggressive when we save their life.

Haha! No, you didn't have to extort coin from them, there was just an option to do so if you didn't want to let them off the hook as easily as forgiveness. I just let them surrender with my Paladin, sometimes I made them a companion or did so just to lead them to a town jail if they did enough evil to deserve jailtime.

Though I suppose you could play a servant of Stuhn and extort them lawfully, he's the Nordic aspect of Stendarr and god of Ransom and Prisoner-taking rather than the Cyrodiilic Mercy variety :D.

Why would you possibly want to spare someone anyway?

I just can't see the reason behind this.

RP value basically. Doesn't seem right that a Good aligned character would kill everyone he comes across without mercy. Especially if they're sitting on the ground begging for mercy. That's just cold.

More options and interaction with NPCs is always a good thing.

I've learnt that anyone who appears to be begging for mercy is ACTUALLY begging for an axe to the face

Suuuuuuure you're going to say that when your superiors are watching.
But we both know what you were REALLY doing out there on those roads.

Fair enough.

Lol It could be a valid method! Fine evil into Oblivion! Call it tax evasion, you know those bandits aren't paying taxes!

By the time bandits or forsworn are begging for mercy, I (as in me, the player, not the character in the game) am in the middle of a raging bloodlust and I want nothing less than decapitations all around.

When those jerks beg for mercy and start running, I'm yelling at my television that there's no escaping here. I chase them down. And then I cut them down.

Anybody who bears weapons against me has zero chance of being spared.

Would be interesting if we had more varied "begging for life" lines. and on that note it would be pretty cool if say you got that lone assassin down to that point, instead of begging for mercy they say some line about the dark mother...or your characters mother in one last act of defiance before my dual ebony axes lop their head off.

But yeah, it does svck that when i feel like being merciful i cannot act upon that, though more often than not...they bleed to death.

Or about how you killed their father and should prepare to die as they get back up.

I think it's [censored] as hell that they do not actually beg for mercy and walk away. My "hero" type character was going to go and let them live. Thy get back up and try to kill. It's [censored].

Tried it a lot of times.

Theres three possible outcomes, if theyre cowering:

1. they stand up after a while and attack you again
2. they just die
3. they live, stand up, walk around for a bit and die without player input

Especially the last outcome suggests that this game was made with a LOL I KILL EVERYTHING character in mind
Do you think if the situation was reversed they would give you the same?
It adds some nice effects, but what do you really expect?

i was in a fight with some random NPC, he was losing, dropped to his knees begging for his life, i sheathed my sword and the fight was over. He thanked me, a few millimetres of health left, and promptly carried on his way, only to be killed by a sabre cat when he was on the verge of dropping off my radar.

point being- i think sheathing your weapon aka yielding is important here.

Thank you wurrble!

The thing I dislike about TES games is that so many times the only option is fight. I for one would love to sneak up behind them and tie them up, leave 'em there for their comrades to find later. Or have them become companions. Or change to a life of good. Or turn themselves in. Or pretend to give in, then send a mercenary after me. I find just killing everything really stupid, lacking in thought.

So now, when wolves attack, I plan to just calm them and keep on going.

I hope, hope, hope someone makes a great yield mod with many options for outcomes.
