Yes, scoop it with a spoon then either spread it with the back of the spoon or get a knife out. Just don't put the spoon back into the jam or jelly after using it for something else. And why? Well because I spend a great deal of time and effort gathering berries to make the jam, cook it and can it and making sure it sets up to a perfect texture and jel. I don't then want it cut up into pieces in the jar but rather spooned out so that the rest is undisturbed until it is ready to be eaten. And I don't want crumbs introduced into the jar either. I have a https://encrypted-tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSylPmOPuzgf6RO6n4PqqK_rDGpK4k2v4fsmStLfLJmp2diNWMN which we use and I grew up using one as well. My Mother didn't allow me to use a knife in her jams and jellies and it stuck. Now my kids don't like folks using a knife even in their store bought stuff.
Of course I don't care how you treat your jams and jellies. But treat mine that way and I go into a rage.
Crumbs in the butter tub get at me but somehow butter in the jam doesn't nudge me in the slightest.
Thats rather cool that you make your own jam, I think I may have done it once as a child.
I guess using the spoon makes some sense, though I'd rather use the knife because it gets rid of any extra lumpy bits of strawberry that are left over - my dad thinks I'm crazy for tossing them out
