You know whats amazing?

The show Law & Order is basically the same show over and over again.....yet it's compelling to watch every time.

You could argue that about a lot of shows - Criminal Minds, Castle, CSI, House, most sitcoms.

It's a popular way of making TV - have a formula that 95% of the episodes follow, have a few over-arching storylines (although nothing too complicated), and throw in the odd episode that goes completely off the rails, or maybe the odd two-parter (complete with cliff-hanger). It works - when it comes to low-brow TV, people like predictability, myself included.

As long as the writing, storylines and acting stays fresh, then all's good in my book.

I enjoy watching House but it's incredibly formulaic, you'll always know exactly what'll happen. The dialogue is just well-written enough to carry it through.

This. Dialogue is what makes these shows so entertaining, House being the best example.

Nothing wrong with it pretty much being the same thing every episode. It's still entertaining to watch. Different cases, different stories... stuff like that.

TV is garbage and has been for awhile. Thats why I like watching all the shows from past generations and most of them are cartoons.

Shows like Law and Order irritate me. The acting is just plain bad, and the story lines just are so... dumb for a lack of a better word.

You know what else is amazing?

It's the fact that you can watch CSI and then watch Bones and then watch Criminal Minds and realize they are all the same exact show with different characters.

I don't like detective shows anymore. I might give Sherlock a go, but I'm not expecting much.

if you want to over simplify it enough then CSI could be considered the same as tom & jerry

Give me one era when TV has been better than it is now.

Seriously, there is an immense amount of amazing TV available at the moment - in fact TV shows are generally smarter, wittier and far more interesting than movies these days.

Go watch the BBC version of Sherlock and tell me TV is garbage.

I don't understand ppl who say TV is garbage. I admit theres not a whole lot worth watching considerring the amount of channels there are, but there are some good shows here and there.

I stopped watching CSI after William Patterson(Petterson?) left the show.

Not saying Fishbourn is bad, but it got to a point where, I only watched CSI just for episodes with Grissom.

Purely subjective.

For me, the late 80s to mid 90s Television era was far more entertaining.

The 80s and 90s....??

Sherlock has nothing against the older BBC shows,

Cadael with Derek Jacobi
Sherlock Holmes With Jeremy Brett
Poirot with David Suchet
Miss. Marple with Joan Hickson

Also on the air was
Columbo
King of the Hill stared
Family guy started
Spongebob was good then
Fairly Odd parents
Everybody loves Raymond
Full House
That 70s show

and the list goes on and on.

and yes I know some of these shows started by the end of the 90s, but they started to tank when the newer generation of "funny" took over in the later years of the shows.

As time goes by, people tend to forget the bad, and cling on to the good.

I'm sure the 80s and 90s had their fair share of horrible shows, but no one mentions them anymore, now do they? Only the most popular ones are remembered. People from back then probably said the generation before theirs was better too. And I bet at some point in the future, people are going to look back and say this decade was the best.

The thing about Law And Order is I get bored before the intro even ends. I think it's the dullest of all the crime shows out there.

Although "The Mentalist" is fairly predictable like other shows like it (IMO), I really enjoy the actor, and as a result I have been enjoying that show alright, :>

The Mentalist and Castle are like almost exactly the same. Observant funny guy helping a police team (lead by a female officer who kinda likes the guy but never actually gets romantically involved) to solve murders.

I still like both series though.

King of the Hill was NEVER good. I hated that show in the late 90's and I hate it now on advlt Swim.

Oh! I didn't know that... I have been wondering what Castle was about.

Still, no one can beat the actor for The Mentalist for the specific character type,

Castle is a poor man's The Mentalist, which is already a pretty (entertaining but still) LCD series.

I think the 2000s is where TV peaked. The Sopranos and Six Feet Under are monuments of long-format celluloid.
