No, you're not a Redguard

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 4:32 am

I could name a dozen differences between Africans and Redguards (the latter don't have white palms for one, and they lack sub-Saharan African facial features).

In fact, the only similarity is the melanin in their skin. I'm tired of blacks saying they're going to play a Redguard because they are one.

In Skyrim they seem very Middle Eastern/Asia Minor like.

But in lore their gods are more African origin.

IMO.

Who cares what you're tired of, they look pretty damn black to me.

Why would it matter to you why someone else wants to play a character? Would you be just as riled if someone from northern Europe said they only wanted to play a Nord? And how often is it that you're coming across all of these alleged black people who "only want to play Redguards"?

Full disclosure: I'm black and I'm playing a Redguard female because she's sixy and awesome and I wanted to roleplay her as a kind of African-esque folkmagic priestess. First time playing as a Redguard since they (and all the human characters) looked terrible before. Also playing a Dark Elf, will start a Khajiit and Imperial soon.

Why do you care? Does it affect your game?

Imperials appeal to europeans and whites by design, Redguards appeal to africans and asians by design. The rest is pretty what you enjoy.

This topic is attacking players. I don't want to read this. If you wanted to point out your opinion of Redguards vs real life people than you could have done it without the attack.

It's not an attack, but an observation pointed out in a civil manner, followed by commentary which may or may not offend the people in question.

But they're not Scandinavians. Nor are Imperials Roman, English or any of the many other ideas thrown around. There are similarities. If you're an African Redguards are obviously more similar than any of the other races.

Nords resemble real life Nords in every possible way, even the name is the same. How you can say that they are not the same people is beyond me.
I have already stated a few reasons as to why Redguards are not Africans, though I understand what you mean by them being more similar to real life blacks than any other group of people present in Skyrim. Still, the similarities are too few.

Is there a reason you posted in this thread? It is quite obvious that you are not interested in participating in the discussion.

I can say they are not the same people because they don't exist. They are a fictional people who resemble Scandanavians.
As for the similarities between Redguards and Africans being too few thats not really up to you to decide for someone else is it?

It's a discussion regarding black people falsely believing that Redguards are similar to themselves in any shape or form. This would have been obvious if you had read my original post.

Too few for what, exactly? You never said why you cared so much what characters black people are and are not creating, or what you hope to accomplish with this highly scientific observation of yours. Shall I delete my Redguard mage in the name of justice and maybe start up a Nord? I suppose you'd ask the same of Scandinavians playing Nords because of their similarities, or southern Europeans playing Imperials (or cats playing Khajiits...I kid).

I don't really know what I am reading really. Sounds like a complaint or statement with maybe undertones of racism? I don't know... but I have the biggest tail of course. Go team argonians!!! :P

You realise that the very nature of the thread is going to lead to a flame war? Bad idea to discuss things like these, especially when the potential for them to get out of hand is fairly high.

This is a game, race does not matter, the reasons why people play a certain race do not matter. It does not affect you, so why worry about it?

I am not here to change everyone's mind about Redguards, the point of this topic is to present black players with a few facts. I just want them to consider the possibility of Redguards not being based on real life sub-Saharan African peoples. Which is a bit obvious if you actually LOOK at the facts presented. Skin colour is not all there is to races, it's mostly facial features that set us apart.

This isnt a discussion, its much more of a personal statement/opinion...

Why do you care what "race" real people choose to associate with in a fantasy game?

Your logic dictates that men must play men, and women must play women, cause I can tell you a few differences between the two... :)

Still, you can obviously see that the pigment color alone makes it a race that black people most easily identify. That's all there really is to it. I'm surprised if the developers didn't invent the race partly for marketing reasons and for avoiding some ridiculous racism/discrimination court cases. Other than that, they offer more multiculturalism. A clearly different-looking man race of which to choose from. And it's black. So, the black people tend to get most attuned to them. Just like white people might feel more like playing white people. End of story. For whites, there are many races to choose from, so the geographic features are a plus.

(Many people haven't thought palm colors or facial bone structure, you know. It seems you are studying anatomy in some form, and you are overinterpreting here.)

I'm struggling to even comprehend this thread. Why in the world would it bother you that a black person can relate/identify with a redguard?
