Do you think it feels wrong to play anything but a Nord?

Post » Wed Jul 11, 2012 12:11 am

Or is playing a non-Nord race a more interesting scenario to you? I find it hard playing my khajiit archer sometimes. It feels odd being the Dragonborn, let alone an khajiit.

Bingo.
I've played only one Nord, ever, and that was because I really liked her appearance so I "kept" her.

It's not any different than the Nerevarine from Morrowind not being a Dark Elf.

Yeah,I get that feeling sometimes. Don't know why. Sometimes it feels that being a Dragonborn is reserved for a Nord character. Of course, I'm not saying that it is,it just feels that way sometimes.

I think it is good you feel a bit odd if you play something else than a human and/or Nord. Not because I think non-humans and/or Nords shouldn't be Dragonborn, but because it reflects that you really are an outsider caught up in the fate of a people so different from yours. I assume this is somewhat akin to the feeling I would guess the Arab in the 13th Warrior had when he was chosen as the 13th warrior.

Just my opinion though.

Seems normal for any race to be the Dovakiin to me.

I prefer being a non-stereotype hero. I like to break barriers and "shock" people. "OMG our Dragonborn is a CAT?!"

Yeah. Deal with it.

Seeing as I had no trouble playing an Imperial Nerevarine in Morrowind, no, not really.

Yeah,definantly...For example I played with a Breton thief/illusionst character and it just felt wrong to play with him, because it seemed that the Dragonborn character should be a warrior Nord type.

I don't know, playing my Argonian feels pretty natural. He seems to fit the Dragonborn role quite well.

I understand the Khajit though, I chose not to do the main quest with her for that same reason. I just can't take too much seriously on her if as I talk to the Caravan about how Khajit aren't allowed into the cities then my Khajit will be along the lines of "Oh, we'll I'm going to the Tavern in town. Later."

That's why the easy ability to role play in Skyrim is a Godsend. :D

It's more interesting playing a non-nord race.

Of all my characters I feel my Argonian is the best looking dragonborn.

Obviously the Nerevarine is a female Argonian.

Being a Dark Elf is actually the worst choice since you're called an Outlander and such and some prophecies speak of a foreigner as Nerevarine, thus making it nearly impossible to make a character that has always been native to Morrowind.

Exactly. That is what the people of Skyrim would expect the Dragonborn to be, much like the people of Vvardenfell would believe the Nerevarine would be a Dunmer when he/she appeared. Yet it isn't written that it have to be like that, which is why I think it is good to get the feeling of not fitting the role due to the expectations of the people and culture. I can't say I have the feeling much myself, but I wish I had.

Only when the dialogue assumes you're a nord. "if you know any true sons or daughters of Skyrim...." says a stormcloak soldier to an elf walking by

Not even then. Actually, that comment proves it's better to play a non-Nord when the locals are such idiots. :P

I do feel weird about doing the main quest without a Nord, but that doesn't stop me.

Although, my Khajiit hasn't started it and probably won't do it.

Never played a Nord, might make one sooner or later, but meh..

Yeah. I personally only play alternative questlines as non-Nord, I think it only feels right to be the Dragonborn as a Nord.

Even if I did not by preference pretty much always play Elven females - (where possible) - I would not have played a Nord - (by birth) - as a race I dislike them, tbh.

I feel very wrong when I make Argonian who is Dovahkiin , looks like the game was made for Nords.
It's one of my favorite races ( Orcs and Bretons too ) and I enjoy playing it :D

Even though I played a Nord for my first character. edit: hey, wait.... I played an Imperial for my first char! no, not really. But I'm not strongly tied to the lore (I mean, yeah, it's interesting and I appreciate that the TES games have their own consistent universe. But I don't research it in my off time, and debate it, and stuff ), so I'm perfectly fine with "breaking" lore - like with mods that don't entirely fit the setting/etc. My current character isn't even a TES race (race mods can be fun - both to get unique looks, and to make special changes to your character/skin/hair/whatever without having it affect bunches of NPCs of the regular races.)

Isn't that the same as saying Morrowind was made for Dunmers? Or that Oblivion was made for Imperials?

The game wasn't made for a single race, and neither were the previous games. Sure people say the canon Dovahkiin is a Nord, the Nerevarine is a Dunmer, and that the canon CoC is an Imperial, but other than that there really is nothing.

Too bad Skyrim lacks so much depth. If it had some maybe it would mattered a little bit which race you chose. Right now the only difference is a couple of lines the inhabitants will say to you, and a little race bonus.
