I think the display plays a key part. I can easily differentiate between 720p and 1080p on my display.

My Xbox is hooked to a 46" Samsung LED Smart TV 8000 series - so that's some serious steroids to the console's image quality. Still, the console versions are extremely impressive considering the hardware.
