YouTubeInternet "celebrities", am I missing much?

Post » Wed Jun 26, 2013 4:33 pm

Never really got drawn into the forum/YouTube/Internet celebrity thing (as in a prominent poster or personality) partly because it didn't interest me and partly because I don't have time I watch videos that many seem to post frequently.

Just wondering am I missing out on much?

No. Don't worry about people you don't care for watching and wasting time on

I don't really pay attention to the YouTube community's pop culture.

You are really not missing much by not following celebrities you don't care for...

I laughed at the irony.

I'm thinking "Who", "Where", and "What"? :D

YouTube is good for one thing, and one thing only: cat videos.

Don't even dispute this new law of the universe. You know it's true. :D

Not really.

Most ONLINE celebs are very famous for a few weeks/months/years, then fade to obscurity or to a similar level as commentators on any given news network.

Not really. Youtube celebrity is like participating in a 'Pick up the largest turd in the turd pool!' contest. It doesn't matter whether which turd you picked was the largest, you still picked a turd.

Oh. Gee. Thanks Justin.

OT: depends on what genre of video styles you look at. While most are unbearable to watch, let's plays are pretty worth while if you are interested in a game and want to see real game play before you buy.

Yeah. I'm quite fond of Let's Plays, and I really have some respect for some of the more down-to-earth let's players, who don't care all too much about being famous--not that there's anything wrong with that, but people generally change when they experience success and feel the need to adapt in order to satisfy everyone.

Music and Lets Plays are all I really listen to/watch on YouTube. Only time I end up in random videos is from a link I find on the forums or a certain part of the video I have to use in a post

Depends on where your interests lie. I follow mostly gaming related content. Totalbiscuit has a nice PC gaming specific first impressions series which is useful to get to know some more indie games, and any potential issues with PC versions of games. Personality wise I know a lot of people find him annoying (but not in the Pewdiepie screeching way) but it's definitely informative.

For something a bit more light hearted I still find Yogscast videos enjoyable even though their general audience is very young and Minecraft obsessed.

And Jesse Cox for lets play content.

But it's all very specific as to which personalities you might like or not, and there are certainly both better and worse ways to spend your time.

There's a difference between just being popular and being a knob who thinks a couple subscribers makes you on the same level of celebrity as a movie star or famous musician.

Oh so I'm a knob now? :P

Imo yogscast is extremely over rated. Their original minecraft videos were hilarious because it was just two dorky needs reacting to a prank their friends were pulling on them. Then they got popular and produce terrible videos of the acting terribly to a horribly procrastinated plot.

Totalbiscuit makes some good, informative videos. Pewdiepie is just awful, all he does is shout incoherently. Yoggscast is boring. Roosterteeth is mostly puerile drivel, although the Ragequit videos do make me laugh sometimes.

I have yet to see any youtube video of some video game "celebrity" I didn't think behaved like a [censored] even if I agree with some of them. I won't replace my video game news sites for youtube videos anytime soon, and it kinda boggles my mind how they managed to get so many views.

Can't really say how the "celebrities" for other interests are though, maybe they are better.

The only videos on youtube I care about are old TV shows, KingofLighting reviews, and the occasional Pokemon-related video.

There's only one youtube "celebrity" I follow and that is Communitychannel. I don't bother too much with these vidya gamey channels (Totalbiscit is the exception). Since I think games journalism is [censored], I'll pay attention to them if a playthrough of a game I am interested in is on their channel. it also depends on who uploaded the playthrough as well. I mean, if it's pewdiepie, then it gets a big hell no from me.
