"300 Hours of gameplay"

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 12:07 am

I know you're going to hate me for this, but I really think that the "300 hours of content" that was promised by Bethesda is a complete embellishment. To me, I got pretty much all I got out of the game at about 150 hours, not to mention, the last 30 hours felt like a grind rather than genuinely enjoying the game. Keep in mind that 100+ hours of content is still massive, and I still loved the game, but I feel that Bethesda really overestimated their own game. It's more like "300 Hours of content with mods and DLC." I don't know, what do you guys think?

NOTE: THIS IS ALL IN ONE PLAYTHROUGH, I DO UNDERSTAND I COULD GET 300 HOURS USING MULTIPLE CHARACTERS. PLEASE READ THAT BEFORE YOU TELL ME TO START ANOTHER CHARACTER!

The only way I can say you might be correct is if you have, in your 150 hours, completely maxed out your character to their fullest extent, have explored and cleared every dungeon, cave, fort, etc in the entire world, have completed every quest, joined every faction, become a Thane for every city, and finished the main quest.

If you haven't done all that in 150 hours, you haven't finished yet.

Well I'm almost at 100 and I still haven't done the main quest past the first couple and have only just visited the Greymane's with one character. Characters aren't near maxed either.

im at 614 hours now. i really enjoy it still. im just taking a break atm cause i havent figured out what i want my next playthrough to be. there was a 40hp vampire assassin on master idea i think i might try. sounds fun with illusion and no daggers or bows and staying stage 4 for as much time as possible.

You have the wrong mindset entirely. The content is not meant to be speed cleared on one character. There are different nuances to the game with different races, different classes and different styles. I have 4 characters and have not stopped playing the game since release day, and I have yet to do more than 60% of the content. When you take your time and play in character style you can get much more time out of it. For instance my mage is level 54, and I have yet to visit Markath, Morthal and Dawnstar. I did almost exclusively mage guild quests till level 30, taking my time and progressing my character.

So.....150hrs on one character right? So....start a second! Brilliant idea eh?

And your now thinking: "but I was getting bored toward the end of the first". That's why there's soo many options for different types of playstyles. A sneak based char feels like a whole different game than a warrior or mage!

Also, just my opinion here. If Skyrim bores you by the end of your first playthrough.....maybe massive scale open ended RPG's aren't your cup of tea.....

I must say Darkside Eric pretty much nailed it on the head right there.

Your lucky to get 7 hours in a typical shooter now a days for the same price. But like you said metal god 100+ hours is still massive to say the least.

I got almost 80 hours in and barely scratch the main quest haven't even seen what half the skyrim world has to offer.

@Darkside Eric, Meh, I've done all of the quests I can find without I guide (which is probably most of them, I'm pretty thorough with these things) I have about 3 skills that have maxed out to 100, (two handed, heavy armor, block) and a few others that are higher than level 90. However, I'm not going max every skill up to 100, because that would be grinding, and I don't consider grinding to be a legit way to increase content. I've done every dungeon I've run into, which is a helluva lot, and they do get reptitive, not Oblivion reptitive, but still reptitive, the thing is, if I missed one, unless it had something uniquely interesting, I doubt it was something I hadn't experienced before.. I have joined every faction, including main quest, became a thane of every city (not Windhelm, that one seemed to glitch out on me, which isn't my fault)

In other words, I think I've seen all Skyrim has to offer without going into an obessive level grind. All in 150 hours

Well if you feel you've seen all there is to see in 150hrs this clearly is not your kind of game.

i'm at 74 hours, and just started the search for the elder scroll. i'm a level 52 redguard (very light skinned), with 100's in enchanting, smithing, and heavy armor. one handed is 91, 2 handed 83, 73 sneak, 84 blocking. i'm the thane of 8 of the holds, and will take windhelm after i join the imperials. i have 7 of the dragon masks, and am working to get to "world eaters eyrie" for the last one. i've found all 24 stones and retrieved the crown. i've completed the companions (3 bugged quests unfortuneately), winterhold college (4 bugged quests), bards college, thieves guild (i accidently skipped "moon sugar rush"), dark brotherhood, and have 14 out of 15 daedric artifacts. i'm married (i'm convinced it was so she could stay in the country), and only have 6 more words of power to find. whew! so...... i can't stop playing.

Personally. I had to stop at 315 hours cause the game got riddled with Crash-To-Desktop plagued areas, wasn't nearly done with it either.

I can't imagine doing the majority of the game under 2-300 hours without seriously rushing it.

@Keldrath, really, the game has been out for 6 weeks and you have 614 hours? That is 15 hours a day, somehow, I don't believe that.
@Lexandro, I was playing casually, on normal difficulty, at my own pace, I wasn't rushing or anything.
@Lotharofthehillpeople I have created a second character, (my first was a nord warrior, now im playing dunmer mage), but the 150 hour content I was talking about was on one character
@Bigk when I hit the 80 hour mark, I still thought there was a lot of content left, but when I hit the 120, I started to notice that quest where drying up (not including the randomly generated 'go kill at bandit at location x' inn quests, I only did about a dozen of those.' I also started to notice that uncleared dungeons where harder to find, and that my skill progression had come to a halt. Also, 150 hours is nothing to complain about, I got far more than my money's worth in the game.

Bethesda acknowledges the fact the (because there are 10 races and many, many playstyles) people replay the game a lot with many different characters. If you were to "complete" the game with the 3 primary playstyles, that would be 450 hours. There ya' go.

Not to mention they could say any number they wanted to, because of the game's many radiant (respawning) quests, so let's be glad they game us a lower number hmm?

How many characters have you tried?

I have 175 hours logged which covers three characters and they've all played very differently. My current fighter has done little with any major quest line and has mostly focused on quests around Riften, and that was sufficient to get them to ~20. I have two other characters waiting in the queue, and no doubt more after that. At least for me each one is a very fresh experience.

i rarely stop to loot anymore. i have more flawless gems than i can sell, and with dual enchanted daedric armor, well....you get the idea. tip: when smithing your daedric armor, smith some cheap leather armor and enchant it with smithing/grand soul gem. do this with everything you can, ie: gauntlets, jewelry etc. + a high smithing potion. OMG.

Then you still have a challenge at hand, if your man enough to try it :P

Restart with a new character and play on master difficulty exclusively. Sure your going to get your backside kicked a fair bit, but thats the challenge of it. And stick to class specific roles (ie only magic perks for mage). Remember that just because you CAN level up a skill doesnt mean you MUST.

@pretty much every one else, this encompases one character, and without milking the content purely for the hell of it. I mean, I could spend a dozen hours with the cooking system, but why? The food doesn't restore that much health, and overall the cooking system isn't that intersting. Just cook a couple peices of food for the achievement and to try out the system. However I have fully experimented with the smithing, alchemy and enchanting systems, which are far more interesting.

Ok but did you explore and do misc and side quests along with crafting. Or did you just run straight through the main quest and faction quests? Just curious. I see so many people complaining things are too short in the game which I think is B.S., but that is my opinion. Fact is you are not supposed to straight shoot through questlines in TES. You do a few quests here and there and then go do other stuff. The game was made to explore and do other things, it wasn't made for linear gameplay and that seems what alot of people are trying to do and then complain about it. I like the fact I am not forced to just do quests or run through the main story. There are so many other interesting things to do in TES games other then grind out quests.

@sheogorath, I didn't until later in the game, the first thing I did after helgan was just explore and get as many locations on my map as possible, but there's only so many times I can pass by the same location before I decide to skip it
