All Time Favorite NES Games

Post » Wed Aug 31, 2011 1:08 am

The NES is probably one of the most recognizable consoles ever, as well as being one of the thing that brought gaming back from the depths, and helped shape gaming into what it is today, and so understandably lots of people had one, and if you had a NES you had games. The NES game library is huge so there's a good chance that everybody's top tier list will vary. Unfortunately, one thing that comes with having a huge library of games is that for every one awesome game there is about five that make you want to kick babies. The reason I felt like starting this thread was because I finally got the final part to fix my old NES, so I've been doing lots of gaming on it. Now without further ado, the question behind this thread, what games are your absolute favorite?

My Top Six:
6. Duck Hunt - This game is quite simply fun, and has an authentic arcade feel.
5. Super Mario Bros. - One of the most famous platformers ever, and one of the best.
4. The Legend of Zelda - A game way ahead of it's time, and one of the best starts to a franchise ever.
3. Mega Man 3 - I don't feel like I need to justify this one, however I do hear that many people like the second better, I never had the second though, if somebody has played both which do you prefer?
2. Super Mario Bros. 3 - I think it took everything the first did well and then made them awesome.
1. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! - I can't find a single flaw in this game. A great challenge, and an awesome game.

I'd say the N64 is more recognizable than the NES.
But, my favorite NES game is without a doubt Super Mario Bros. Great game.

I like Super Mario Bros 1 and 3. I'm not really a big fan of 2 (As in the REAL 2), but that's probably because I've barely played it.

Not at all. Though a lot of people know the N64, anybody who know Nintendo know the NES.

I say SNES was what gave Nintendo more face and even more with the N64. I miss those days :sadvaultboy:

Bah only if you are a young'un. :P The NES is iconic.

I guess my favorites would be Mario Bros and Duck Hunt, just because those are the first ones I had that came as part of a bundle.

No way! I'm not much of a fan of Nintendo, but the NES single-handedly helped restore faith in the video game industry in the mid '80s.

I'm 23, so I wouldn't call myself a "young'n", but I started with a NES and a SNES at the same time. Great times.

super mario world. simply because it made other platformer games at the time look like pitfall for atari or whatever.

I could probably count all of the good N64 games on one hand. NES and SNES are classic though, GameCube is not half bad either.

Blaster Master - Terrible name (For whatever reason I guess Nintendo decided American audiences didn't want any sort of story or characters or anything so they cut those out and gave it a bizarre excuse-setup and name), but awesome gameplay. Much of it is a side-scrolling platformer, but with huge, mazelike levels that you can explore in all directions using the Best Tank Ever, which is upgraded with better weapons and the abilities to run on walls/ceilings and even fly. Each level has several sub-areas you can explore with the pilot by getting out of the tank, switching to a top-down gameplay mode. Instead of being in a linear line, the entrances to later levels are hidden in earlier ones, accessible with the upgrades to your tank. Great stuff.

Crystalis - Action-RPG, not unlike a Zelda game but with more RPG aspects (leveling, buying equipment, etc.). For a time when there weren't many RPG's, it did well on all counts. Uncomplicated to play, but a good level of challenge and making you think now and then.

The Guardian Legend - Great game that not only combines top-down action/exploration and vertical-shooter gameplay, but does both better than many games do focusing on either. Big game with lots of content; a big map to explore packed with items, lots of different weapons to find and upgrade, over 20 shooter levels, and some tough and crazy bosses. A shame it was a fairly obscure cult classic, since I consider it superior to many of the cherished "classic" titles that started the big franchises, like Super Mario Brothers, Castlevania, Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, and so on.

Probably Super Mario Bros 1 & 3. And Duck Hunt (minus the dog). Oh, and Final Fantasy.

I don't remember most of the NES games I've played.

Duck Tales! The music in that game was epic.

That really begs the question, how were composers able to use 8-bit audio to make such masterpieces back then, but most game soundtracks today are fully orchastrated but svck?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_Gunman was my favorite, but techincally it was on the Famicom not the NES. :P

I would have to say that Super Mario Bros. 3 was probably the best game ever made for the NES/Famicom, though.
