Am I Alone in this?

You're certainly not the only one.

I tend to free-form my character as I build them... but I have a rouch archtype in mind usually: gruff miner, dainty seductress, chiselled swordsman, etc....
I don't make up a back story or anything, once I start playing the rest falls into place.
As for making dozens of characters before the game releases? You are definitely INSANE :bonk:

Yeah, I do that all the time for plenty of games. Making characters is fun. I currently only have 2 builds for FNV though.

I planned a hardcoe mode character and a non hardcoe mode character.

hardcoe mode character= Jeremiah Johnson an old rugged mountain man who lives off the land, and survives no matter what.

Non hardcoe mode character= Jesse James a young cowboy who is the fastest gun in the Mojave and isn't afraid to kill people who are in his way.

You are insanely crazy, you should be locked away forever!

I just free-ball my first dude and than I go back through and do stuff that he didn't with later guys.

I will think about the kind of characters that I want, but until I see the character creation mechanics of the actual game, it is hard to Pre-Roll a character.

However once I do know how it works, I will have a starter character that is not supposed to get far in the game, but give me experience with what the game needs or how it plays. Then, I spend time planning out a character.

I don't make up backstory, I just plan out skills, karma, main story faction, etc... And it'll prolli be twenty or more before the game actually comes out if I don't quit... Hahaha.

I don't really do that unless I find some "character building tool" online similar to this:

http://vault106.com/fallout-3-character-builder

That keeps track of the perks and skills and whatnot.

Otherwise, I just play the game on the fly and if I feel like a seriously flubbed a build I either cowboy up and move on or I go for broke and start a new build...

I definitely do... I have a backstory and a reason for the tagged skills and SPECIAL my character has. It just enriches the game for me.

I really only try and get an idea on what my 1st character will be like and go from there when I get the game

I usually have no clue what my second or third character will be, hell in FO3 my second character was just a more efficient 1st one

I think physically, I'll build my character the way my Fallout 3 character looks, because I was quite proud of how he looked. I may use the same build. Fallout 1, 2 and 3 I enjuy a charismatic and speech character over combat.

I'm down for hardcoe, so Medicine, Repair, and Survival tags for me. If a high Intelligence is at all related to Fallout 3's Intelligence, I'll max out those skills. And Small Guns, and Speech, and Lockpick, and Barter,...etc. It was just so easy to do. Even without Broken Steel, I maxed out 5 skills by lvl. 20. w00t FOR HIGH INTELLIGENCE!!11!11!

You're absolutely crazy if you stick to the plan. I have a rough idea in my mind and then I work with it when I actually get to character creation. That's pretty normal. As long as you're not drawing up charts of Traits, SPECIAL stats, Perks, and so on, you're not crazy.

About the only planning I've done is decide that my normal play through (first) will be a saint, my second play through (hardcoe) will be the anti-christ.

xD No charts. I have no need of them... I remember it all in my head. :B I know SPECIAL and most of the traits and perks I just choose whatever... And I DO stick to the plan... At least, I did for FO3.... Hahahah,

I have one really developed backgorund on the first one I'm doing and 2 ideas for the next 2.

A stuttering explorer who collects oddities in the wasteland. I would go into his background but that would take a bit of time.

A young CL gold digger Clint Eastwood wannabee who gets in trouble with his big mouth. Handy with speech and explosives.

A tribal of some sort.

Then a mafia like guy who uses all non combat skills and has Raul or boone do the dirty work.

A good doctor for my pacifist playthrough.

Nope, when you plot ways to kidnap npc's for your love nest you're crazy.

Planning characters just means you've an imagination, but as for builds I really cant decide untill I get the game and start to feel immersed.

I would bug the devs by sending them PMs asking about the behind the scenes calculations so I could have a character planned out down to the exact skill point distribution, starting statistics, birth signs etc. before the launch of Oblivion. So no, you are most certainly not alone.
