Ambient Occlusion broken with Patch 1.5

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 9:33 am

I dunno, the Fallout 3 compatibility profile does re-enable AO - of a sort. The implementation is absolutely awful under that profile. Using Performance there was flickering, but it was acceptable to me, but using the Fallout 3 profile the flickering is horrendous and it's like every patch of grass has a black halo around it in the vertical direction, the effect doesn't seem to lay down properly on the ground surface. I'm going to have to turn it off, and the game looks completely plain without it enabled.

This needs to be fixed, I can't believe a patch would ship with this broken.

Try Modern Warfare 3's version... it looks better in my opinion and has less of a performance drop.
Nice. This will work for me until a proper fix is implemented.

I really hope the only reason this is broken is Bethesda has made an early implementation in the renderer in preparation for native AO support, like in the game jam video...

(The rationale being that the 2 ways of applying AO - driver-level and built-in native - are clashing with each other)

Picking the MW3 AO Compatibility profile doesn't seem to let me enable AO at all. Are you sure you mean MW3?

Am I crazy or does it actually look like AO is still active on interior locations (in buildings, etc.), it's just not present on the exterior world anymore - most noticeable in its absence from under grass? Maybe I'm mistaking actual shadowing on the interiors for AO, but it looks alot like it's active on interiors. Almost like they DID implement the Game Jam video's AO, but broke exterior AO in the process.

[EDIT] Just checked again by loading inside The Frozen Hearth in Winterhold, both with AO enabled and without, and it's definitely working in at least that interior. It's just not apparently working outside.

That is interesting. I have noticed walking around markarth that AO is missing. But in the ratway and other interior locations AO looks like it is enabled. Since the 1.5 patch added shadows to grass. Perhaps a change to AO in the exterior world was inadvertently made??

Would be nice to hear from Bethesda if they are working on this.

Gone for me as well. I tested 2 systems, and AO is gone for me on both a 580 GTX with 296.10 drivers and a 680 GTX with 301.10 drivers after upgrading to Skyrim 1.5

if you choose AO with Modern warfare 3 compatiblity, the AO is still enabled in interior,
It is actually also running in exterior as well, but the effect is not present, you can see the AO still running in exterior by seeing the FPS drops :P, I suspect the new implementaition of grass shadows is the culprit
lame...

I see it enabled on at least some interiors (I say "some" since I obviously haven't been in every interior in the game since the patch, but it's been enabled on every interior I've been in - perhaps not caves, I haven't really checked one since the patch) even with the regular ES5:Skyrim AO profile.

a new patch comes out, and i hoped for AO-fix, but still no AO with the optimize Skyrimprofile, only @ Loadscreens. AO is kinda the coolest thing since Bumpmapping. well lets wait for the fix ;).

Bethesda, are you listening?

As I mentioned in post #2 of this thread, this issue was brought up during the beta and Gstaff collected dxdiag information and reported it to the team. Ambient occlusion was never a supported feature, but by all means, keep bringing it up. However, you may have more luck getting their attention with personal messages rather than posts in these forums.

For a moment I thought I was doing something wrong in not seeing AO. I've got the same issue with the rest here. Jeez, Beth, for every fix you create you create new problems. Is like we are back to square one but with different problems.

Did any of you try the latest patch ? 1.5.26 ?
Did it fix the issue of Ambient Occlusion ?

(I'm still on 1.5.24 and I won't upgrade until for a few more days. Maybe even skip the patch, it doesn't seem to fix that much).

Screenies, please.

Okay.

First screenshot is with AO enabled at Quality: http://www.3dart4u.com/images/with_ao.jpg
Second it with AO Disabled: http://www.3dart4u.com/images/without_ao.jpg

No matter where in the world, there is no visible difference.
Before patch 1.5 there was a real, big difference visible, especially with the grass and bushes and so on. Now, it does not make any difference although FPS is effected. With AO enabled (but not visible) it reduces the fps with around 15 to 20 fps.

Forgot to mention: I only use the normal Nvidia configuration screen, no Nvidia Inspector or whatever.

Ah ok, my bad :P
But then again, they are screenies then for those who think we are just babbling about the missing AO :P

Not to hijack the thread, but if this SSAO doesnt work for you guys, you can use ENB's SSAO/SSIL. It's really good and I believe more optimized than Nvidia's.

Small video of it working along with Detailed Shadows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VteXEfs6_Ww
