AMD recommends using the 12.1 preview driver, NOT 11.12

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 3:21 am

talk about fail.. how bout going to NVidia's website and selecting a driver.... clicking the continue button and being presented with the NVidia home page repeatedly..

Just the other day i had to manually add a download location to the address bar to get it to download...... simply because of an NVidia website glitch and occasionally i see them moving stuff around too where old links do not work...
Doh okay that is even harder than what AMD is doing I only use a Nvidia card in my secondary PC so I haven't checked their site frequently but I remember a time where it was hard to find a Physx software bundle without Nvidia drivers - drove me crazy back then.

You're going to trust some cracker-jack site over AMD's own advice about their drivers?

Neither. I will trust my own benchmarks.

I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 and the performance in cities noticeably improved with 11.12 so I think I'd better wait until the final version of 12.1.

I'm using the 12.1 preview with two 5870's. Crossfire works fine and so far I have not had a single CTD or weird texture bug.

So maybe I'm missing something obvious here. I've got 12.1 installed now. I want to create an application profile for Skyrim. In the 3D Application Settings menu I chose the options I want. I clicked the save button. It opened a dialogue which was confusing at first until I read the help which said to go find the program the profile is going to be for. I navigated to TESV.EXE and clicked "Open" which is the only option other than "Cancel" on the dialogue box. Nothing happens at that point. No file is saved. No profile is created. No error messages come up. Nothing.
The profile is saved. Verify it by setting antialiasing to 8x and AF to 16 in the profile, and turning them off in Skyrim's settings. Then open TESV.exe and see if the profile is correctly applied

Hm.. uninstalling my old 11.11's caused my screen to become 4-bit colour with an irreversible High Contrast theme.. I had to guess at the buttons I was pressing to reinstall.

.. then reinstalling caused my Windows Aero effects to be permanently disabled, irregardless of troubleshooter, experience rating, or FixIt app.

After a system restore, I'm back on 11.11c's. I'll wait for the actual release version.

OMG stupid thing did that to me also. I didn't end up with the aero problems though. I was so mad, guessing which buttons to hit and it wouldn't uninstall through windows in safe mode. On the plus side, when I did get the 12.1 installed it worked and has worked well.

Thought I'd chuck in a post to say 12.1 preview seemed to give me a smoother experience with skyrim, and definitely an fps boost. I force triple buffering in radeon pro, which also helps because vsync is on by default :)

Have a look at the Gaming > Application Profiles section to see if anything has been added there. I've added a profile for Skyrim to get around an issue I'm getting on my system.

Not so great for the Mobility 5870s (which aren't really 5870s, just slightly down-clocked 5770s). All sorts of weird flickering effects, almost as if one of the cards isn't being given the data correctly. The main menu shows it nicely - the smoke renders just fine, but the Skyrim logo blinks like crazy. Hopefully this is fixed before the 12.1 WHQL release, because the 11.12 drivers don't contain the Skyrim Crossfire fix, and all the 11.11 drivers cause a nasty BSOD.

Already did, it isn't applying.

Nothing there. I checked. CCC insists there are no profiles to manage.

Spent some time fishing around via Google and I'm not alone in this, but it seems either nobody cares about the few of us who have the issue or nobody knows why it doesn't work. None of the poor saps who have it have even gotten replies yet.
