AMD recommends using the 12.1 preview driver, NOT 11.12

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 12:02 am

If you have an AMD card, this page will interest you.

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst121Previewdriver.aspx

It says they recommend using 12.1 instead of 11.12 because 11.12 does NOT include updates from 11.11c. So especially if you have a 5xxx card, go to the link.

11.12 introduced game breaking texture flashing on the player characters head for me with a 4870x2. I had to roll back to 11.11c...

I'm def getting pretty tired of these driver issues and lackluster performance compared to Nvidia. And I've been an ATi fan for years... I think I just may be done.

I'm not having performance issues; it's just that my game crashes every second.

ATI really likes to play 'Where's Waldo' with their beta driver listings sometimes. Thanks for the link!

Anyone seeing any negative side effects from the drivers over the 11.11c?

I found that interesting, IMO.

Why do people keep saying this?

It's untrue....

Nvidia's SLI configuration is also producing similar glitches and issues..... and they still haven't "resolved it"

Agreed DHJudas. AMD and Nvidia are both having similar problems with multiple card solutions.

Good to hear about 12.1 including the 11.11c fix for 5000's, seeing as I have a 5970. I think the biggest change to the 12 series drivers is the ability to set custom profiles for applications now, which is something that has been sorely lacking for AMD drivers for a while considering that Nvidia has had it for ages now. Finally we are actually given the ability to set custom settings for each game.

i asked the ATI driver developer when we'd finally get the promised Crossfire force mode selector for what kind of crossfire mode we wanted as a selectable option..... i was told never.... which obviously didn't please me..

Scissor/AFR/Tile..... sadly none of them are really available still... we'll see.. maybe after giving them a little tough love about it a year ago originally.. profiles finally arrived.

Played Skyrim for about an hour with the new drivers. No CTDs or blue textures so far . . . .

Driver works fine for me. I checked out that benchmark link...AMD says to use 12.1, they made my CPU and my GPU. I'll use 12.1. Benchmarks can be wildly different across different systems and none of those in the article showed any performance difference worth considering.

On an unrelated note, I have discovered that Object distance has a MASSIVE impact on FPS in cities, up to 40%. None of the other sliders did as much to affect performance as Object distance, so consider turning that down, especially in Markarth. And of course, different cards/systems might have a different impact but it's worth checking out on your own.

thanks, I just started a topic about my texture problems. Hopefully this may help them.

I have a horrible time finding these new drivers at times. Thank Talos for you gurus.

So far, none of these drivers improve Skyrim performance for the Radeon HD 4870. I even had to use this weird dll file to get Crossfire working correctly. I wonder when those of us with cards older than the 5000 series will get support for our cards? The game works fine now thanks to that dll fix, but it looks like they're trying to force us to upgrade by limiting support for < 5000 series cards?

Running a 6990; no noticeable improvement in skyrim performance over 11.11c drivers imo. I still get major performance tanking in areas of habitation.

It's because imbeciles are pretty insistent about proving themselves as such.
