OH I remember why I don't like the .308 Win. its short and stubby...I prefer a much more macho round when I am killing stuff....lol..The .30-06 is still a much better round in my experience with shooting...Which I have been doing since I was 8 years old and I am now 35...I stand by the .30-06........More powder same weight bullet equals more POWER

I don't have a problem with the .308 round...I was just looking for more diversity between guns....BTW ..338 Lupua would be an awesome choice as this game takes place way into the future...I did not know that the M1 Garand was rechambered for .308 my bad...I have never seen one I have owned three all of em' they were all .30-06 Rem....BTW why would they Use a French Gun to highlight the most powerful gun on the Game..Why not use the Barrett as a model for the AMR. Also the .223 is used in numerous Varmint Rifles and Pistols as well. I just liked the feature of a lot of different ammo types and was just curious why they limited it to what it is. As it is way to easy to accumelate lots of ammo no matter the gun your using...Thanks to Vendortron always being stocked up on all things gun related...Anyways didn't mean to rattle anybodys cage

Don't sweat it. I am just in the lucky position of having been involved in all the pre-release threads where all the weapon speculation was going on. We were also graced with the presence of Josh (The E must stand for Elvis) Sawyer on countless occasions. He needled us with hints about what he'd put in the game and would correct us if our conjecture got too far afield. It is the only time (and last I expect) that I had such detailed conversations with a developer prior to the release of a game. In spite of all the flack Josh is getting for how the weapons ended up, I must stick up for him here and say he did his homework and tried his best. The guy really knows his [censored] (considering he was a self-professed gun novice as recent as a few years ago) and he has my utmost respect. I do wish we'd asked more questions about the damn energy weapons, though.................

What if they had put an Old Ammo Factory on NV where it could be looted for all the best stuff..Make a quest out of trying to get access to it...Full of Legendary Deathclaws and minions perhaps...and you have to be allied with NCR or BoS to be able to access it.....

You guys sure know your stuff.

And I agree with lowjack989, about how no matter how mcuh ammo you try to burn through you always have piles of it in game cause there is limited variety.

Personaly I would like to see more guns and ammunition types, bu thats probably mroe for a different thread now.

We don't need more ammo types for all that ammo we have. WE NEED MORE TARGETS!

The .338 Lapua has problems: Sound and flash signature. In practice in the 'stan, it's been drawing a lot of return fire. And it's still a big cartridge, and an unwieldy rifle.

Granted Afghanistan has presented western forces with a dynamic-changing situation, with long, open fields of fire, but the problem with that was the decision way back when to go to that p*ssy little wildcat 5.56mm round. A look at history could have told the powers that be that good long range marksmanship is an essential in that environment.

Still, someone who knows what they are doing can still waste a target at 1400+ metres with a .308 rifle, just the same as they can with one of the considerably more expensive shoulder cannons. That view won't sit well with some people, but I'm an old grunt and hunter who believes in skill for the kill, and only using enough gun for the job...

@.46ACP:

I like your thinking, and you are right...big issue with FNV is there isn't enough fighting. At least in F3 if you got bored you could head out and draw some fire, so to speak...lol.

Thats why the new XM2010 has a rather long and substantial "flash hider" that also seems to make the report of the discharge much quieter. But it's not a supressor. Really. :hubbahubba:

With the correct load, bullet weight, barrel length and rifling twist, that puny little varmint round can still deliver considerable terminal effect at 500m. High velocity and the yaw induced by the spin rate from the proper rifling twist is ESSENTIAL. That's why the M4 svcks so much, too short barrel and not enough twist. That said, I'd still rather have a full sized round for the long shots, not to mention targets with any king of armor.

Current world record shot is over 2400m by a Canadian with a L115A3 using .338 Lapua. I don't exactly recall the longest reported kill with 7.62 NATO, but I'm pretty sure it was well over 1400m, like 1700m or some such. I may be wrong here, so don't quote me.

Because the game is not real life, or MW2? I think OP has been playing too much MW2 prior to playing FO:NV. :D

I will rebut with this:

Mr Josh E (my mama don't call me Elvis) Sawyer put considerable effort, research and time into making the weapons in this game much more realistic. It is not unreasonable for players to expect weapons to act with some amount of realism, at least as far as the physics of the game world has explained. Fallout is an alternate world, yes, but all the "magical" or "fantastical" elements have had some attempt at explaination by the developers in terms of the fictional world's differences in SCIENCE! and physics. The are no magic undead turning swords in Fallout. So considering Josh's efforts at improving the realism and a reasonable expectation for performance standards that make sense, even in the alternate world, asking for the guns to work "better" or "right" is not, in my opinion, to much to ask for. It was clearly Obsidian's intent to make the weapon play much more realistic, so if the devs desired it, why can't we?

Plus comparisons to MW2 are getting a little trite, don't you think? Maybe you should update that to "BCAUSE THIZ AINT BLACK OPS! or something, don't you think?

A Brit, actually. The record he beat was by a Canadian.

Astonishingly, he did it twice in succession.

Oh, of course! Black Ops is what all the MW2 fans are raving about now! Thanks for reminding / updating me. :) Sorry, I've never played MW2 and never intended to, just my personal preference for type games I play. Mainly stick to Fallout or anything post-apocalyse or Diablo-like.

If you need to remember it, just try to remember that his rank was "Captain of Horse".

Who else on Earth would have a rank called "Captain of Horse" besides the Brits?

I do too, but remember this is a Sci-Fi retrofuturistic role-playing game that gains its roots from fears of what the apocolyptic world would be like from the 1950s (note that I said that it's what they thought what the world would be like, not the whole "they split from our timeline in the 1950s and never moved on" that I see in FO3...).

This is the exact reason why I hosted a series (I think we got it up to 11 threads) of gun nut threads prior to release. It gave us gun nuts a place to live without folks telling us how we should want to play our games and everyone who didn't care to talk about guns stayed away because they knew that's all we talked about in there. It worked out fabulously for all concerned. Mutual respect FTW! I will do the same again when FO4 gets announced and they open a forum for it.

OT: I personally would like to see ammo recipes opened up for more types. I would like to see more than one or two "special" type for each weapon. AP for handguns would be nice.

Not a problem...was a little heated for a moment...I'll get over it though...

.46ACP: I guess it was asking to much of the dev. team to create the Ultimate gaming experience and mesh it with a "true" shooting simulator which makes you correct for every variable their alternate universe could throw at you...Imagine trying to hit a Fiend with the Sniper Rifle on a roof running at 500 yds., in low-light, and high winds and you just had to take the shot.....so you could truly utilize boone as a spotter in this situation. Thats a whole other thread though

I don't really know what varieties are available for these guns IRL. The one thing that really annoyed me was that bulk ammo and the "oddball" ammo types (.38 special, .223 pistol ammo, .22 plinking) couldn't be broken down and used for crafting better ammunition.

Granted, there is plenty of ammo available, but I would have preferred to have less ammo, and no casings or jars of powder available, but a supply of lesser quality ammunition to use as raw materials.

Now thats a great idea that makes logical sense Showler I still would desire more recipes and calibers...Oh well, the game is still the best I have ever played even with its shortcomings

...And proper shot shot placement. <_<

I wouldn't mind having even more ammo hand loading recipes possible, but they need to be harder to get hold of. Currently if you take Hand Loader, your damage gets a *substantial* boost from all the special ammo types you can make. Too easy. Really exotic ammo (9x19mm jacketed armor piercing rounds) ought to require points in Science to effectively manufacture.

That and no type of ammo should offer +damage% without drawbacks. Either you are putting more powder in the cartridge (+weaponDamage%), or you are making it expand and tumble better on soft targets which reduces its effect on hard ones (+targetDT). The .308 JSP, for example, is completely and utterly ludicrous with its +50% damage. Where, exactly, is this damage coming from? If you assume the standard .308 round is ball, then the JSP should do +damage% and +targetDT.

Throwing another 2 cents worth out there .Why not use some alternative propellant like cordite or some other military grade propellant as cordite has become obsolete? How about a tracer round? Depleted Uranium shells would be cool for the AMR. All of this could be implemented in a mod. or perhaps the dev. team will take some of this to heart and put it on an expansion

Yeah Fallout 3 had the Chinese Assault Rifle yet it was chambered 5.56 not the much more powerful 7.62 round

Because it was meant for Chinese agents operating in America, and 5.56mm is the standard military round. 7.62 wouldn't have been as common.

And the AMR is not based on the Barrett, it's based on a French-made .50 BMG anti-materiel rifle.
