Ammo....

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 5:40 pm

Why is it that the ammo in the game not accurate? For instance the 12.7mm is really a .50 cal round. That Machine is a M1 Garand it is chambered 30-06 in real life. The 5.56mm is the same as the .223 yet the .223 is less effective. Why the odd chambering of the Brush Gun in 45-70 why not 45-90 if your gonna make it that powerful for the lament the 45-70 round is a .45 cal with 70 grains of powder and the 45-90 is a .45 cal. with 90 grains of powder? That ammo is hard to come by now or should I say expensive and custom. The sniper rifle should be chambered .50 BMG or 12.7 X 99mm the same as the Anti-Material rifle otherwise known as the Barrett M82 or the M107. The Hunting Revolver should be chambered in something like the .50 cal pistol round or the .454 round. Why all the indescrepencies with the Ammo. I mean they were trying to make it real right? Also, The 9mm pistol looks more like a Colt M1911 that is a .45 ACP.

Also, wouldn't there be some AK's floating around the Mojave? Which is the 7.62 X 47mm round

It's not meant to be "real", it's meant to be reasonably balanced.

In most cases they gave you one rifle and one handgun using the same ammo, so you don't need to have 45-70 and 45-90 to use the Hunting Revolver and the Brush gun.

AK's were pretty exclusively used by Chinese forces in the Fallout universe it appears.

Your character automatically recovers a percentage of the brass from the ammo you use.

Ok granted it is a game but if your gonna put the fabled M1 Garand on the game ....Then don't make it use the same ammo as the Hunting Rifle and the Sniper Rifle... I mean why not just make the 30-06 round since that is the same as the foley used to make the sound of the .308 ammo...As per the making of Fallout 3

Yeah Fallout 3 had the Chinese Assault Rifle yet it was chambered 5.56 not the much more powerful 7.62 round

There is only one M-1 in the game, and it is a custom job.

If they used 30-06 and only had it available from the one guy, you'd run out of supply just as you got the gun.

If you had other merchants carry the ammo, it would confuse people who never found the gun.

The 12.7mm SMG who in their right mind would hold the trigger down on that thing. Has anyone on here ever fired a .50 cal Desert Eagle that thing is a [censored] cannon?...you would be shooting the sky after the first 3 shots....A .50 cal pistol grip machine gun...I get it is a game and they needed to keep it simple but come on now. I love this game but I would like for it to at least be a little more accurate i.e. realistic.

True, I get that...So, why not chamber the Hunting Rifle in .30-06 and Keep the Sniper with the .308 cal. or lose the .308 ammo altogether and Make the sniper rifle a .50 BMG with only a 3 round chamber ala The Reservist Rifle from FO3 That way you have the .30-06 round and the .50 BMG...Or The Sniper Rifle could still be .308 and make the Gobi Campaign Rifle .50 BMG with a 3 round clip

So much ammo as it is, I can imagine trying to craft something new with an extra 3 - 6 different primers / shells and or powder types.
I already find crafting a tad more convoluted as is, not to mention they just added the 12.7 rounds finally to the reload bench.

Most of the guns are heavily leveled, and put in difficult places or over charged to represent that fact, ammo for those weapons are rare.
Decent EW's have just started to pop up in game after the patch as it is, so a whole bunch of new guns with new ammo types is not likely.

Being leveled means that the weapons ammo is just a control, a vermit gun uses the same as a marksman but deals far less damage.
A hunting rifle does a vast ammount of damage so its ammo costs more and is rare till at least half way through the Mojave > Vegas trip.

A brushgun is even more powerfull so it's even rarer and costs alot more, as well as its ammo.

You see Ammo has little matter in NV it's just a control measure to keep you and the gun balanced.

Ammo types however are of great use and well implimented, and worth the investment of skill.

Plus .223 is not inferior compared to AP 5.56 rounds they're better for medium and sometimes high DT due to a moderate penertration bonus and less of a damage penalty.
That is the ammo type you should be comparing them to.
Surplus, some are inferior others have bonuses too, as well as penalties and some times they're worth those penalties for the bonous they provide.

Because this is a game where the damage is mostly determined by the gun, not the ammo.

Because there was no need for extra ammo types in the game. It's not a gun sales production.

Because in the Fallout Universe the guns may be chambered differently than in our universe.

Because it was too much work.

There is no need to have forty types of ammunition and several reasons not to. If you want that kind of thing you buy the game on PC and look for a Community Ammunition Library (CALIBR) like they had for Fallout 3 and a mod to increase the variety of weapons.

OK I get it was for simplicity but I am not worried about my games being complex as thats the way it should be. I find the reloading to be quite easy to use. Vendortron would have the hook up on all the Ammo as he already does....I have the game on PC its the only way to play it is far better than my shotty XBOX 360 and PS3 sold em' both and bought a new 5870 for my computer. Never been happier with my gaming experience

>For instance the 12.7mm is really a .50 cal round.
The 12.7mm round used by the pistol and SMG is clearly not a .50 BMG round, it is probably something similar to the .50 AE.

>That Machine is a M1 Garand it is chambered 30-06 in real life.
.30-06 and .308 are not so wildly different that it would be impossible to retool the rifle. Plus, as somebody pointed out, there's only one in the game. It's custom work.

>The 5.56mm is the same as the .223 yet the .223 is less effective.
The .223 is *not* the same thing. The military cartridge 5.56mm NATO is specified to have a higher operating pressure, and thus, greater energy in loadings which take advantage of this. Plus the .223 ammo in F:NV is, I would say, better than the military ammo. Slightly less damage, but has a partial armor piercing effect and less weapon wear (cleaner than military).

>Why the odd chambering of the Brush Gun in 45-70 why not 45-90 if your gonna make it that powerful for the lament the 45-70 round is a .45 cal with 70 grains of powder and the 45-90 is a .45 cal. with 90 grains of powder?
.45-70 is vastly more common. Several major manufacturers offer modern rifles in .45-70 and ammo isn't particularly hard to find. If you want .45-90 you're basically forced into getting a Sharps replica or something custom, and to hand-load your own ammo.

>The sniper rifle should be chambered .50 BMG or 12.7 X 99mm the same as the Anti-Material rifle
But then why would you need the anti-materiel rifle.

>The Hunting Revolver should be chambered in something like the .50 cal pistol round or the .454 round.
The Hunting Revolver is based on the Magnum Research BFR which is available in .45-70. The 12.7mm round seems to be a rimless cartridge which would make it much more suited to a semi-automatic repeater pistol (using rimless cartridges in a revolver requires awkward mucking around with clips), hence, the 12.7mm pistol.

>The 9mm pistol looks more like a Colt M1911 that is a .45 ACP.
It's a Browning Hi-Power. Same guy and same general time frame as the Browning 1911. so it looks similar.

Apart from the fact it's a game....

Bullet diameter doesn't tell you much about the actual round, in real life. Specific rounds are meant for specific firearms, and not all firearms of the same name have the same calibre. Barrels can be changed easily, and with a bit of work the action of many firearms can be replaced with components that will take an alternative calibre, rather than the calibre the firearm was originally chambered for.

However, as I said, it's a game...a game that seems to have an endless supply of nitro double-based propellant for small arms ammo, but relies on 200+ year old technology.

On the subject of .50 cal 'sniping' rifles:

They're big, they're heavy, the ammo is heavy, and they are worse than useless in a running gunfight. They're fine if you are operating within a protected area with plenty of troops around you, but if you are wandering around likely to be set upon by the bad guys, you would want something far more practical. Keep in mind that all the .50 cal rifles are essentially AMR's, derived from the WW1 anti-tank rifles. In WW2 the anti-tank rifles were retained for some specific sniping jobs, such as firing through heavy scrub or trees against hidden targets, so the idea isn't new, but they never have been used as a primary combat weapon as the game allows.

I meant to say the 12.7mm should be chambered .50 AE as the BMG round is huge and would probably break your arms and any other body part attached upon firing.

Why not make the Sniper Rifle .338 Lupua then instead of the .50 BMG that way you have a difference between The Anti-Material Rifle... .338 Lupua is the real Sniper cartridge

.30-06 is a much better choice than the .308. The .30-06 Rem. beats the .308 Win. hands down as it has a flatter trajectory, higher muzzle velocity, higher long range energy i.e. knockdown power

I use both the .223 Remington and the 5.56 NATO (which you can buy wholesale) cartridges in my Ruger M-14 Ranch Rifle this the only gun you can use both rounds in BTW.. the only difference I see is the price and a slight increase in muzzle velocity

As for the Brush Gun I see your point as the .45-70 is a much more available cartridge

Yeah I didn't think about the Browning Hi-Power

These changes would only mean 2 cartridge changes and change the designation of the 12.7mm to .50 AE

Why is it that the ammo in the game not accurate? For instance the 12.7mm is really a .50 cal round.
.50BMG and .50AE are vastly different rounds. One is a huge machinegun round and the other a pistol round. Josh named the pistol round using the metric conventions so to reduce confusion between the two.

That Machine is a M1 Garand it is chambered 30-06 in real life.
The US Navy used M1s that were rechambered for 7.62NATO (.308) long after WWII ended.

The 5.56mm is the same as the .223 yet the .223 is less effective.
5.56mm and .223 are not the same round. The military 5.56 has stronger brass that can withstand the higher SAAMI pressures specified by NATO. You can use .223 in a 5.56, but not the reverse, and the .223 will have a lower muzzle velocity, and thereby much less energy (energy=mass x velocity2)

Why the odd chambering of the Brush Gun in 45-70 why not 45-90 if your gonna make it that powerful for the lament the 45-70 round is a .45 cal with 70 grains of powder and the 45-90 is a .45 cal. with 90 grains of powder? That ammo is hard to come by now or should I say expensive and custom.
.45-70 was the standard US Army rifle round from 1873 through 1892, and therefore was very popular in big game hunting and target shooting. The Brush Gun is modeled after the Marlin 1896, which was commonly chambered in .45-70.

The sniper rifle should be chambered .50 BMG or 12.7 X 99mm the same as the Anti-Material rifle otherwise known as the Barrett M82 or the M107.
1. The AMR is not a Barrett. It is modeled after the French PGM Hecate ii, per Josh.
2. Most issue sniper rifles in service are chambered in .30 caliber sized rounds. The US Army M24 and the US Marine Corps M40 are in 7.62 NATO. The replacement for the M24, the XM2010, is chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum.

The Hunting Revolver should be chambered in something like the .50 cal pistol round or the .454 round.
The Hunting Revolver is modeled after the Magnum Research BFR, which is chambered in .45-70.

Why all the indescrepencies with the Ammo. I mean they were trying to make it real right? Also, The 9mm pistol looks more like a Colt M1911 that is a .45 ACP.
The 9mm Pistol is modeled after the Browning Hi-Power, or GP34, a 9mm handgun design of Browning manufactured by FN and used by tons of militaries around the world.

Why not make the Sniper Rifle .338 Lupua then instead of the .50 BMG that way you have a difference between The Anti-Material Rifle... .338 Lupua is the real Sniper cartridge

Well, the .338 Lapua is a fairly new round. If you include that, you might as well include things like the 5.7x28mm. Also it may have simply been a desire to limit the number of different types of ammo.

I'm not sure what your specific complaint about the .308 round is, there are large variety of sniper and marksman rifles chambered in .308/7.62mm NATO. It's not at all foreign to the role. The Soviets also have the 7.62x54mm, which is ballistically extremely similar, and worked out great for their Mosin-Nagant snipers and then the SVD.

.30-06 is a much better choice than the .308. The .30-06 Rem. beats the .308 Win. hands down as it has a flatter trajectory, higher muzzle velocity, higher long range energy i.e. knockdown power

Er, no, it really isn't. The .30-06 has a small advantage in muzzle energy due to having a higher velocity. But both rounds typically use about the same bullet (.308 inch diameter, 160-170 grains), and the .308 is measurably lighter due to its smaller case.

I use both the .223 Remington and the 5.56 NATO (which you can buy wholesale) cartridges in my Ruger M-14 Ranch Rifle the only difference I see is the price and a slight increase in muzzle velocity

I'm not sure if 5.56mm NATO even makes use of its higher pressure, in typical loadings. But it could. 5.56mm is specced at 62,000 PSI, while .223 is only specced at 55,000 PSI. Higher allowable pressure equals more propellant equals faster or heavier bullet equals more power. Maybe we in reality don't use this potential, but it exists all the same. This validates the game's saying that .223 ammo has a 10% reduction in damage, in my opinion. It's not a completely inexplicable and left-field feature.

Edit: Haha, I see .46ACP/Gunny and I are fighting on the same team. :)

.223 in-game is traditionally used in the .223 pistol, I believe. The only .223 pistol in the game is That Gun, which is modified to allow it to use the higher-powered 5.56 ammo.

I guess the .223 ammo was left in the game for tradition's sake (and to add some more variety for the 5.56 rifles.

The 12.7mm SMG seems to share a similar configuration to the TDI Vector, albeit, a bit more boxy and less angular. It does have a rather large central frame that extends forwards of the trigger group. I assume it is possible that this could very well house the same type of asymetrical recoil system as the Vector, thereby drastically reducing the felt recoil.

I don't have a problem with the .308 round...I was just looking for more diversity between guns....BTW ..338 Lupua would be an awesome choice as this game takes place way into the future...I did not know that the M1 Garand was rechambered for .308 my bad...I have never seen one I have owned three all of em' they were all .30-06 Rem....BTW why would they Use a French Gun to highlight the most powerful gun on the Game..Why not use the Barrett as a model for the AMR. Also the .223 is used in numerous Varmint Rifles and Pistols as well. I just liked the feature of a lot of different ammo types and was just curious why they limited it to what it is. As it is way to easy to accumelate lots of ammo no matter the gun your using...Thanks to Vendortron always being stocked up on all things gun related...Anyways didn't mean to rattle anybodys cage
