Anachronisms, who writes this stuff at Bethesda?

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 6:30 am

I got out from the burning town where I was being lectured by a five foot nothing lass who looked like she was wearing her Dads armour, good to see modern sensibilities about equal opportunities are cutting through realism, then I meet some lass outside the caverns who's "y'all" and "howdy pardner". Who writes this stuff?
:shakehead:

Where's the pregnant women, the sick, the lame, the wobbly on a stick. Where did all the accents come from? Even if we're talking space travelling earth people from various lands hitting a planet and integrating into it, why in hundreds of years do they still have their home accents.

Tally ho, y'all, mein gott.

Tamriel has been an equal opportunity place from the start.
Its not Earth.
Its a very harsh place, where magic, monsters, gods and crazy despots using all of those make life difficult.
It makes a lot of sense for the average woman to be equally proficient at fighting as the average man.

As for the language used, I always imagine that what we hear is a translation, because if they spoke Cyrod or any of the other languages that Tamriel does have we wouldnt be able to understand them.
Similar to how a foreign movie is dubbed in English.
How do you translate a rural German saying in American English? Youll probably make the voice actor say an American rural way of speaking instead.

Have you not played any of the other Elder Scrolls games? If you have, how can this surprise you in any way?

This is quite a silly thing to make a thread about.

Though I, too, am interested in who says "howdy pardner."

I think he's one of the guys behind Mesagoa for Oblivion, so I think he have.
It would be cool with lots of different NPCs, but there are restrictions. If you see how the rest of the game is axed and streamlines here and there, you would't be surprised.
They have never had those kinds of NPC anyway, I'd say NPC are better than ever, regarding being unique. None of them are deep though, nor very interesting.

Who says "howdy pardner"?

Festus the bartender robot at Sunset Sarsaparilla HQ :teehee:

Never heard that in Skyrim though. Nor anything else too anachronistic either. And it's a fictional world ;)

I'm also fascinated by the prospect of finding this mysterious Southern gal. Where is she?

Heheh...I haven't heard that. I have had certain followers say some really weird things, though. Apparently if you add them to player faction (tested on Marcurio), they'll start using whisper-shout taunts instead of usual greetings when you walk up to them. "Hey skeever-butt!"

 Well, then don't add them to the player faction.

Erik the Slayer's had a few derp moments, such as shouting "Is that all you've got?!" ...at a fire-spewing pressure plate he was standing on, or commenting to me that the cave we were in was a bit dull--apparently failing to notice the werewolf standing not five feet behind him. :slap: Sigh. Moments like that are part of why I keep him around, of course. Free entertainment!

He has yet to refer to my character as "skeever-butt," though. Possibly because he knows she'd turn him into a charbroiled Nord for that. Never heard "howdy partner" either, from him or from any other NPC in the game.

I think your writing it as no one says this in this game, or any TES game. Perhaps your thinking of Fallout New Vegas. Which was written by Obsidian.

Why is everyone reading this for a serious conversation? Ok she didnt say howdy pardner but it was something like that. I'll have to find her. Good point about the translation. Never thought of it like that.

Anyway, its a silly post, a very silly post and discusses a silly thing, so its best to reply in a silly way.

Now this is a silly answer, to a very silly post and is right in keeping with the theme. Whoever you are, I like yer style.

Oooh you. I am now going to spend weeks getting an NPC into the game that says "howdy pardner, why I auda!" just like John Wayne. I say weeks because with Oblivion it would have taken an hour, but it aint is it.

What makes something like a human accent in our language out of place? This is a fantasy world. it's not supposed to actually exist somewhere in the universe. Otherwise the fact they look like humans, speak in English, and have European looking armor and architecture would be just as ridiculous.

Is it because it's not derived from medieval history?

Well, one thing that really did stand out was when one of the guards said "You ain't a Nord." Ain't simply doesn't belong in a setting like Skyrim.
