FO 1 and 2?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:44 am

My old (original) discs are scratched all to hell, so I bought the "Trilogy" at Gamestop from the bargain bin. What is cool, is the trilogy includes a lot of patches and fan mods, like the "hi res" patch. If you posted this topic, you are at least open to the idea of playing the games, so I'm not sure what all anyone can say to influence you further than your own curiosity.

Some of the patches are probably outdated though. The Fallout 1 high-res patch is outdated. The latest version on NMA is better.

No, you don't. You're welcome to try if you want to, but the combat will put you to sleep. It sure did for me, and I had combat speed cranked way up.

I've always adored the combat. It is much more white-knuckled and visceral than in Fallout 3 and you have to employ a fair amount of strategy. A lot of the frustration I think people feel with the combat system is they are playing with a character build they didn't put sufficient thought into. To be fair though, it does take multiple play-throughs (or a good guide) to gain the understanding necessary to make a real heavy and gain that satisfaction from the combat.

What you have to understand about the original games is your choices carry a hell of a lot more weight. As an example, in Fallout 3, no matter how many points you put into Agility, you could almost always still rely on VATS to bail you out. In the original games, it wasn't as generous and you HAD to use Action Points for attacks. All of them.

You can get FO1, FO2 and FO Tactics all for 20$ on Steam.

You can get the hardcopy of the trilogy for that price.

Yes, play them all FO1 thru to BoS. I bought them hardcopy from Amazon £5 on one disk. except FO BoS, which is PS2 or Xbox. If you liked FO3 its good to go back and play them, especially FO Tactics. But I feel not having played FO 1 & 2 leaves you at a slight disadvantage when chatting on the forums, but its good to see where some of the FO3 ideas came from and how they changed from what they where, like the Centaur for example.

The Devs have said you don't need to play the first two. Still it would be better to understand the factions and other references from the first games.

I want to buy them but I don't like the idea of buying over the internet.

Not sure how I could find these games in real life. Always afraid of Identity theft or something.

About the only way you are going to get these games is over the Internet, unless Gamestop will do a special order. However Amazon and other main line retailers are about as safe as you can get to purchase over the interwebz. I would not worry about a legitimate store stealing your stuff.

Also, if you get one credit card and designate it only for online purchases, it is easier to track what happens on the account.

Buy the Fallout Trilogy. It's not needed for New Vegas but I HIGHLY recommend it. :fallout:

There is depth to see... but yes, you could tag small guns, though it comes at a cost. I almost never tag Small guns (or any skill that can be raised with books)

Well, I completed fallout 1 fairly easily with Small Guns but in Fallout 2 yeah it's best to to not tag it and keep it at an average skill level and then move up to Big Guns or Energy Weapons when you have the money for it.

Well, I don't know dude, my favorite move it to raise the Small Guns up high, mine is like 103 atm, if you use a High Small Guns + that silvery grey submachine gun (that uses 10/9mm Im not sure which offhand) on burst, the thing is a pretty brutal toy

or just use the gauss pistol/rifle, a head or eye shot with one of those and the sniper perk can ruin anyone day.

It's not really necessary; if you don't think you could stomach the kind of gameplay present in the first two games then don't force yourself to play them. I'm sure New Vegas will tell you everything you absolutely need to know; it's unlikely that Obsidian wrote New Vegas and ignored the fact that many players haven't played the first two games. When Marcus and\or Lily talk about the Master for example you'll probably get more out of the dialogue if you've played through the original Fallout, but I'm sure they'll give you a history lesson if you're interested.

The only things you really need to read up on in lieu of Fallout: New Vegas are NCR/ New California Republic, Enclave, Brotherhood of Steel. And possibly Caesers Legion, but as of now, most of it is based on Van Buren, which is not canon (VB is the cancelled Fallout 3)

Yeah, nothing from the Van Buren design docs should be taken into consideration for New Vegas; especially elements from Van Buren that are being included. For example, there's no way the Caeser's Legion was formed by Caeser in 2238 because while that would have worked for Van Buren which was going to be set in the 2250s, New Vegas is set in 2281. The year the Legion was founded is probably more like 2250 or 2260 something now, maybe even 2270 something.

I'm just reinforcing your point that nothing about the Legion from Van Buren should be considered canon by giving an example.

Oh good, some people are very frugal about Van Buren around here, so I thought you took my post as an insult. But to build on what we mean.

OP, It might do SOME good since Fallout:New Vegas is recycling bits and pieces of Van Buren, It wont be Fallout Van Buren New Vegas, they just want to use bits and pieces that they think were great parts of VB (Though truth be told, it might have made for a good game had it not been cancelled, based on what I read.

Thanks for the advice. I just installed Fallout 1 and will give it a try.

I'm not all about graphics actually. I want to become a real Fallout fan who knows his way around the series. A good story means everything to me and I really want to understand the world of Fallout :)

I'm worried that the graphics will put a quick stop to my efforts of playing Fallout 1 & 2 :(

How long do you think it will take me to play both games (time I will spend in the games themselves).

Well honestly, if your stopped by graphics, then gtfo please, I mean come on man, use your imagination, I'm young and I know this, I play dwarf fortress and some other text based games, I have a great time, it's called imagination, it really helps man, I loved fallout 1 and 2, and the games are pretty long, just because they're old doesn't mean they're bad :D

> Turn based combat

> Fallout 3

WAT

Sorry, my post came out wrong, I meant I did not like the turn based combat in 1&2, but I did not need to play them(1&2) in order to enjoy Fallout 3, turn based combat and isometric views have never done it for me.
