Annoying Slogans About Video Games

Post » Thu Dec 01, 2011 10:31 am

What are some slogans that developers/etc. use to describe video games that you find annoying?

For me, it would be "Easy to play, Difficult to master". It gets used to describe so many games (especially strategy games), it's almost like that's the first thing they talk about when they go to make a game. "Ok, anyone can pick it up, but if you wanna be any better than mediocre, you have to really read into everything." "Yeah! Sounds good."

Eh, I pretty much frown on the jerkass users who like to be UB3R H@RDC0R3 SHUT3R ON XBOX LIEV!

I've seen alot of casual gamers (IE people who just kind of sort of dabble in gaming, but it never becomes a hobby) who have put us all in that cask. So pretty much any generalizing slogans. :shaking:

I think that's why it bothers me so much. It's such a general/broad statement that is too attractive for it's ease of use.

Game includes over 9000 feature x. Marketers really like to show off numbers on the back of game boxes. The numbers might not be all that impressive but because it's a number people will think it's awesome. Like over 20 monsters or 30+ levels. Every time I see that I'm like... is that a lot? 30+ levels isn't much when they're all short corridor levels. And 20 monsters might be a lot of they're all like the dragons from Skyrim. Or not very much if they're all like the goblins from Neverwinter Nights.

Everything mentioned in this thread, plus anything along the lines of "Easier for new players but still contains the depth for the older players" - no, it doesn't. I haven't seen one instance where this is true.

Indeed. We here have taken to calling everything fake epic just "purple", for somewhat obvious reasons.

But a lot of games are easy to play and difficult to master. Think of things like Counter Strike and Starcraft. These both are very easy to get in to but also very hard to be good at.

I thought this would be about bullet points. "17 action-packed levels!", "dominate your foes with an arsenal of 8 lethal weapons and tons of special moves!", Does anyone actually buy games based on that stuff?

"It's a _____ with RPG elements!"

It's usually just _____ with a layer of superficial numbers thrown on top.

Indeed. Epic is now used on any video which boasts generic "dun dun duuuuuuuuun" music and glowing objects.

"Realistic"

That usually gets almost every immersion enthusiast , myself included, hyped and then I usually turn into a sad panda.

"We want to make the game more accessible to people who haven't played the genre before."

RPGs are the only damn games that do this.

The one phrase I really hate applies to films as well as video games.

I want to destroy whoever said that.
