Another Hopeful PC SPECS Thread =/

Post » Wed Aug 10, 2011 2:56 pm

Hello, I remember reading somewhere that Star Wars the Old Republic tried to support newer and older pc's. I upgraded my physical ram recently, so i am up to par on that i believe (3GB). As for the other specs, not completely sure. I ran a check through this link right here if i could run SWTOR (http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/) It stated i didnt meet the minimums for the game, and i dont know if that means i wont be able to run it at all or at lower settings. Other games have been relatively easy for me to load at the highest settings, and the site said i wouldnt be able to so i came here for a second opinion.
SWTOR REQUIREMENTS(as from wikipedia) System requirements [3] Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4000 or better / Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.0 Ghz or better Memory: At least 1.5 GB RAM for XP / 2 GB or better for Windows Vista/7 Graphics: ATI XT1800 or better / NVIDIA 7800 or better / Intel 4100 or better. 256 MB minimum video RAM, shader 3.0 or better fully compatible graphics card. OS: Windows XP (SP3)/ Vista / Windows 7 DVD-ROM: 8x or better Space: 15 GB[4] MY SPECS ( as from dxdiag )

lame CPU with a deader-than-dead socket-type and your graphics card is AGP and worse than the recommended

So no go, no upgrade options, sorry.

You might even be able to squeak by with the processor, but the GPU is nowhere close to good enough. Unfortunately, as DEFRON mentioned, there aren't any AGP cards that will get you where you need to be on the graphics processor. You need a PCI-Express video card, which will mean a new motherboard.

Just means it's an excuse to do a new build and light that Pentium on fire in the BBQ grill in the back yard.

OP, record when you do this, as nothing puts a smile on my face like watching the Pentium architecture die :)

Hey! You made my Pentium 4 cry!

...I should record this, shouldn't I?

Considering the age of your hardware, I'd say 800 minimum and up to 1200 if you want a really, really good one. 500 wouldn't get you much of a gaming machine.

Around a thousand is the magic number actually, but they're well worth it. I spent over $500 USD for my GPU alone, and I absolutely love it.

It's more that you can't upgrade. As DEFRON said, the CPU socket and AGP slot belong in a museum with the dinosaurs and you wouldn't be able to buy good parts for them at all.

That's a pretty huge waste of money when you can get a 460 GTX for $130. It was even $100 after MIA yesterday.

It's a waste of money if you're only interested in gaming right now. People often shell out much more money for very good hardware that will all but guarantee smooth gaming performance for at least a couple years. I'm not saying hardware is never overpriced, because it often is, but a smart shopper can find an expensive chip well worth the money.

A better investment than buying a $100-200 card every couple of years? I think not. Theres a point of minimal gain with every piece of hardware and with $500 on a GPU you're so far past it you can't see it anymore. I've always viewed it as an exponential function where y is price and x is performance.

That's why I said a smart shopper could find an expensive card that gives excellent performance on par with its price. Not every card over $200 is overpriced. Also, a $100-$200 card lasting two years is a stretch. Most cards of that price won't even max out some of the more demanding games out now, let alone in two years. You have to remember, games are constantly wanting more and more power at a fast pace.

Of course, all of that's assuming you want to max the games you play, or at least play them on High. If you're okay with running on Medium or even Low with a two year old mid-range card, then by all means, wring that svcker dry.

My 9800 GT runs everything fine for me, maybe I'm not just as picky as other people.

If you just need nothing but the tower and already have an os, you could get a good gaming pc for around 800.

Trust me, I know what it's like to not be picky. I'm running a 4650, for pete's sake. I have to settle for medium-low on most games I play on here. A 9800 is much better, but there are far better cards than that one now, and even in your restrictive price range. I, for one, have had enough of settling for anything lower than High with a smooth framerate, so I'm very willing to put at least $300 into a GPU. I'll admit, I probably wouldn't pay $500 for one, but $200 won't get me what I want, and that's Crysis running great maxed with the best graphics mods available for it. That must make me sound like a graphics nut, but I don't care. This is my revenge for years of turning shadows off and lowering draw distances.

But...but...I'm over 9000 GHz! I must be fast!

Oops, I think that branch predict from earlier might have been a little off. Gotta go dump a huge pipeline...see you in a few hundred cycles. You reading that memory? Can I borrow it?

Ha, geeky bathroom humor. New low?

Would love a liquid cooling system with the attached water cooler/coffee maker. :P

Or I could get a GTX 580. ;)

It's really to prevent shelling out extra LATER when I may not have the money, whereas I could spend $500 USD I have NOW and not have to worry about it later.

$200 now and $200 a couple years later, you save $100 and can still play anything with ease.

Yep. The problem is that at the bleeding edge hardware performance to price scaling is pretty lop-sided. In other words, the closer you get to the top the more you're paying for less performance. There's usually a sweet spot just below the bleeding edge where you get the best price/performance/longevity mix. In the grand scheme of things a bleeding edge GPU isn't gong to last you all that much longer than the one a step or two below it (at a fraction of the price).

I don't mean to say that you made a bad decision, but any economist will tell you that you could have spent$130 now had $370 in a savings thing like a CD. Worst case scenario is you have to cash in on the CD early, so you lose any interest, but if you don't then you make interest at a decent rate and you therefore net more money.

And given that GPUs don't exactly appreciate in value well after a few years... your argument of shelling out now instead of later is flawed (unless you just burn money instead of pocketing it, but then you have bigger problems)
