Anyone else find Amnesia: The Dark Descent too scary?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:26 am

I just started to play this game, it is really good in all ways. But I can't continue playing it, it gives me nightmares

Like jesus christ look at that thing...

If you haven't played it, this might be quite of a spoiler to see this monster so up close

I'd love to hear your opinions and experiences about this game too.

I must tell you that both me and my boyfriend and his friend have stopped in our tracks with this game, it is just too much  Only times we are able to play it now is among friends and with the help of some alcohol.

I beat it last month, didn't scare me. My cousin was watching me though and it scared him quite a bit.

I'm something of a nightmare fetishist. Amnesia terrifies me, and I love it for that.
While I did have to quit a couple of times, it wasn't the atmosphere that stopped me playing. It wasn't even the monsters.
It was getting turned around in the sewers, and spending half an hour trying to figure out how to fit 'Slot B' into 'Aperture A'. >.>

Lol you guys are really sensitive then :P Didn't scare me at all, but I did find the game concept pretty interesting.

The best Amnesia reaction video is definitively link removed

As for the game itself, I really liked it, it was really scary, intense and had cool puzzles. It is the best adventure game I have ever seen (because that's pretty much what it is). but I would have liked it better if they had added something like the "Xen" level from Half-life at the end, it would have been cool (maybe if there is a sequel?).

I didn't find it scary.

The controls were very clunky and difficult to get the PC to open doors and pick things up. I got stuck in the room with all the stones that you have to move around and haven't played it again after that.

It would be great if it were possible to mod the game to add high-res textures.

I'm not afraid to admit that when I played it at a friend's house I cried like a little girl and crapped my pants :(

The demo is pretty creepy, but I don't have the full game yet. :P

I'll probably get it next time it goes on sale. :)

I found it horrifying. Once I encountered Mr. Flappy-Jaw, I was constantly paranoid of all sounds and doors opening. I would panic whenever I saw one, and that would usually cause me to be found, which didn't help with me panicking.

So yeah. It was a bit scary.

Stopped playing halfway through the water part. I do not enjoy being chased. It's one of my primary fears and it scares me even in games that aren't horror related. That and I got sidetracked from it. I'm sure with enough persistence, I would have made it past that segment.

It just gives me headaches thanks to how the screen goes wobbly and blurry the lower your sanity gets.

Yeah... same. I remember playing Shadows of the Empire, on the Hoth level where you can open those Wampa cages. Cage me freaking nightmares running from them.

Amnesia... it's a good game and I enjoyed what I played, but I really couldn't play for more than 10-20minutes before I had to pause/quit and go and calm down.

My first encounter with that monster was a few days ago. I was looking around this corridor and I turn around and one just freaking walked through the door I just came from. It didn't see me, it turned the other way thankfully and I booked it out of that area. After getting my wits back (repeated tellings of "it's just a game"), I went looking for it. I went through the door it came through, I looked both ways, and went the way it went. I turned the corner, expecting to see it, and there was... nothing. It had completely disappeared. Somewhat confused, I turned around and it came through the door again and saw me. I freaked out and shut off the game.

I've pretty well lost the will to play at this point.

Yes, I am a bit of a pansy.

On that topic, just how do you stop enemies from following you?

Removing yourself from their sight for a certain amount of time will make them lose interest, like hiding in a closet and barricade yourself in a room.

What's heavy enough to stop them?

Also, how do you solve the puzzle in the demo? :(

I've never played the demo so I don't know :(

Also, barricading the door is rarely useful as it takes quite a few items to slow them down, and usually you don't have enough time. Best to just hide in a closet or behind a desk.

The game is too scripted, and monster AI are too stupid. Not scary enough.

Amnesia and Fatal Frame are two series I will never play just because watching people play them scares the crap out of me.

And Amnesia seems to have stupid puzzles and the blurry screen annoyed the crap out of me, and I wasn't even the one playing it.

The puzzles are actually quite easy, yet rewarding when you figure them out.

The first time I encountered that.... THING... was when I was least expecting it. Caught me totally off-guard.
There I was, poking through a desk drawer, in a well-lit room, minding my own business, when something SNARLED behind me.
I didn't even see it until after I'd sprinted to a closet and hidden inside.
For the record, hiding in an enclosed space, in a small room with no easy exit, watching an utter abomination through a tiny crack, is pretty [censored] horrifying.
I don't think I was even forming coherent sentences at that point.

It's one of the very, very few times I've been totally immersed in a game, and I think that speaks volumes about the workmanship that goes into Frictional's products.
Of course, everyone is scared by different things, so obviously some people might not have been affected by Amnesia. But I was quite impressed.

This, minus the apartment, plus surround sound headsets = absolutely terrifying.

The groans of those things have the same effect on me now that the Project Zero "Ghost Near You Dammit!" sound has.
Although the complete game is not close to being scary as PZ/Fatal Frame. It still lacks a background track that continues to play in your head when you shut off the console and your flat is still dark and something could jump at you ANY TIME NOW.

Oh god I bought this game and it finished downloading at midnight. I thought it wouldn't be that scary so I started it up. I got to the water monster part and cried myself to sleep.
Jk about the crying part, I'm a man. :P
