Archery, Swordmen, or mage?

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 8:02 am

What do you use for combat?

Do you like to use bows and arrows? How about the sword and shield combo? Or do you like to blast's those enemy's with your magic?

I personally am a huge fan of archery. Nothing like sneaking then shooting a arrow into a enemy with out them knowing.

How about you? What do you use for combat and why.

I love making those really LONG shots with my bow, no other feeling like it in the game. But i do like to mix things up now, as i find using just the bow alone, to be boring after a while.

So i am going to try a sneaky archer who can switch to sword & board when i feel like it.

Cast spells until you run out of Magicka. Move into melee combat. Use a bow against dragons.

Why would you want to limit yourself to only one combat style is beyond me.

I have a sneaky assassin-type character who is as at home cleaving bandits in two with a battleaxe as he is sniping them from a distance with his bow.
It can be entertaining, switching between the two styles depending on the situation :P

Sword and healing, fire spell and healing, or to get a Dragon's attention, lightning bolt and healing. That would be a healer, then, I suppose.

I asked the same question for creating a 2 character. You need to know 3 things about each play style.
-A thief character takes alot of time to finish battles with alot of enimies, since if they spot you it will be hard to hide again, and you can get killed, but the sneak damage is awesome to take enimies with 1 arrow.
-A warrior character will surely finish some battles faster, but will recive much more damage and get overcumbered alot of times.
-A mage will have fell resistance to damage, and always use mage robes to this kind of character for faster magic regeneration. But it's damage is insane. You can easily conjure 2 dremora lords and drink some skooma while watch the battle.

I don't delve much into magic, but I do tend to keep a healing spell equipped to my left hand and a sword equipped to my right. I'll usually creep up on enemies, range as many as I can without being detected, then switch to the healing spell/sword combo and finish them off with melee.

I created my own little modification so I fight exclusively with a bow.

if an enemy forces me into melee combat, i have a custom "dagger and shield" that is basiclly a bow and an un-nocked arrow, so I can smack them about with my bow to stagger them and jab an arrow in their face before nocking the arrow again and resuming shooting, the visual effect is quite striking ;p

That sounds awesome...
as for the question, I mainly used archery on my first char mixed in with daggers and a bit of magic....currently I'm using a big slow 2haded weapon on my viking nord character

There's always combinations of those three like Spellsword or Necromancer Rogue.

u want to limit ur combat style in order to become really good at one thing. just don tleave any major gaps. i found so far in the game that the most effective is archery and sneak. bonuses and u can clear out an entire room before they find u. i've done it many a time.

This is what I've done. I started of with a balance character and eventually decided to start a new game with a sneaky archer with sword'n'board support for melee combat.

Jack of all trades, master of none

Interesting. Could be entertaining as a video, lol

This for the most part. Currently playing with a level 50 mage, let me add one correction to the above. If you play a mage screw magic regen. You want to fortify destruction to get the cost of the spells lower. Past level 40 you will want 0 cast spells(so fortify destruction 100%), but even at lower levels you will want 50%. On master difficulty the spells are not strong enough, but on Adept you can take down most enemies in 3-4 dual casts with incenterate or thunderbolt at level 50. Throw in the two dremora lords, a flesh spell, some illusion, enchanting, and have fun.

And people say mages are crap and underpowered in Skyrim, lol. Shows what they know.

I play with a mix of all three and I do quite well. Albeit, the spells are now pretty much only used for things like Oakflesh and the likes.

You have to play the 3 styles if you want to enjoy the game properly , if you only play a warrior or a sneak sniper thief , you'll have missed a good part of the game .

Personally , i have played 4 characters so far , everytime i reach level 40-45 (when my build is done ) i get bored and start a completely different character ...

As far as "strength" is concerned , the "Conjurer" (dead thrall , 2 dremoras ) and the "sneak-archer-sniper-poisoner-thief" are the most powerful/easier build , the first one because you don't have to fight , you just watch the show , the second one because it's the most efficient to kill dragons and entire rooms before they even detected you (and sheer firepower if you use simthing/alchemy/enchant loop )

But the most fun so far for me was a destruction necromage and sword and board , i enjoyed them the most because having thralls (and collectionning them , especially with the mod that let you thrall enemies above level 40 ) is awesome , and the sword and board have given me the coolest fights

I have a mix of warrior and sneaky archer. I haven't hardly touched magic at all aside from the occasional restoration spell...come to think of it he hasn't put a single point into magicka and won't (level 41). I find it to be a more than enjoyable play style. My character isn't a jack of all trades...was never meant to be. He is however, a master at some, mainly those skills that you would associate with a warrior or an archer.

Sneak Mage with a spec. in 1h. Get a sneak kill w/ bound sword, then frenzy or use destro and throw up a ward. Switch to sword and finish off anyone. I'll also throw in healing, conjuring up some minions, and
Paralyze.

P.S. My character is a glass cannon and is usually one shorted by everything, so the wards and healing are essential for my build now.

I love glass cannons too , they are the most interesting to play because there is a real sense of danger , even at level >40 , you still have an achille's heel , a weakness that can get you killed fast , the fear of dying is present , your character is not invulnerable and closer to the other NPC in Skyrim in term of resistance .

but on the other hand your offensive power is amazing , so you can have a lot of fun , i did this with my necromancer , i completely ignored alteration in favour of restoration (wards , healing ) , it's great fun cause you still have to be careful to survive , but if you have good tactics , you win in all encounters

I alternate between using a bow and daggers depending on the situation.
