Are energy weapons really so bad?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 7:57 am

How are folks having problems finding ammo? Have none of you encountered fiends yet? They drop, Laser Rifles, Laser RCWs, Plasma Rifles. Like Fallout 3, any laser rifle guy for some reason drops 40+ micro rounds. I am sitting on 1200 ECW rounds, and 1500 micro rounds, and that wasn't even remotely difficult to acquire.

It is true, Guns and Melee/unarmed is better. Trouble is a lot of folks in this thread aren't even Energy Weapon users giving advice, which is horrible. Energy Weapons, while not the king of combat anymore, is still easy as hell to use.

I hear a lot of people say Fiends drop a ton of energy weapons, but in my games they drop guns most of the time. Infact, I looked at the Geck and one type of fiend has a 3 in 4 chance of spawning an EW, another type has a 2 in 4 chance of spawning an EW, and a third type as no chance of spawning an EW(they'll spawn guns). Not every fiend spawns a ranged weapon either. I suppose if you cheat the system by waiting for 72h and then farm the stuff that respawns, EW ammo can be abundant.

BTW, 1500 MFCs weigh 150 lbs.

Some of us, like me, don't like to farm items.
I only buy MFC from the occasional traveler and Van Graffs.
Farming makes the game a lot more easier.

You either fight enemies and farm them, or you buy them. I'm not sure how easy it is to find the high end rounds for guns, but it's very easy for energy weapons due to conversion.

Of course we have. Problem is thought that when you find Fiends for the first time by playing normally, you most likely already have normals guns at 100 which makes energy weapons kinda pointless. Add in fact that they are underpowered and there is a problem.

I was already walking in Power Armor had a good amount of ammo and guns, and that was in my teens to mid teens in levels. Energy weapons are easy as hell to find if that's your point. Fiends, can be fought and killed at a low level, doesn't have to be near the end unless you don't want to do there for some strange reason.

If anyone is reading this and is unsure of about Energy Weapons, they're fine use them. Just remember they need your character to have a high crit rate. Most of these opinions are from people who don't even use energy weapons. I'm level 27 and I use Energy Weapons, nothing was difficult to kill at any point in the game.

Heard of Vegas rush?

Or other combat skill that isn't guns?

Or runaway?

My first game used EWs, and I thought they were bad. My second game used EWs with meta-game knowledge and I thought they were better. My third game used Guns and I realized, even with meta-game knowledge, EWs were bad.

I don't know when they exactly respawn, but it isn't some trick to know that enemies do respawn. If you hit up where some of the wanted enemies are, and those in inside the south vegas ruins. Thats about 20 fiends, chances are pretty good they have energy weapons. Even if you do play hardcoe, it's one ammo type, unless you do handload rounds which you need a perk for. If you guys points are which skill is better overall, go melee/unarmred no ammo, no weight, lots of perks to make killing enemies easy as hell.

On Very Hard Mode, the Laser Rifle is considered almost useless w/o a sneak critical.

Well you're min/maxing when you're playing. If that's the case, just go unarmred/melee beats both guns and energy weapons if that's how you play. I play because I simply enjoy energy weapons, have since the original fallout.

I didn't use conversion either.
(I did use it later to try out Max Charge ammo but weapons still svcked.)

Also stores like silver rush sell empty energy rounds for free. So it's basically free ammo for you to recycle.

Didn't recycle either.
But that was because I didn't know how to recycle for like 80% of that playthrough.
Still, even after I learned I could do it I felt like I didn't want to use that feature since I had 27K caps.

Yeah 27k caps will do that heh. I mostly used it to convert rounds I don't use like small energy cell to microfusion.

100% crit. with a silenced sniper rifle or Gobi.

Can an Energy Weapon accomplish this? Nope.

And by the way, the YCS/186 has a 2x crit. multiplier, with the fact it takes one less MF cell than the normal Gauss Rifle. Plus, it's more than enough to take out enemies on Very Hard Mode. Trust me, Gauss Rifles are on par with Sniper Rifles, in every way.

1 ammo type doesn't matter. You're limited by inventory weight in hardcoe, not inventory space. YCS uses 4 MFCs, so thats 0.4 weight per shot. Multiplas uses 6 MFCs, so thats 0.6 weight per shot. Compare that to the sniper rifle, which uses 1 .308 round per shot and weighs 0.055.

Well you're min/maxing when you're playing. If that's the case, just go unarmred/melee beats both guns and energy weapons if that's how you play. I play because I simply enjoy energy weapons, have since the original fallout.

I'm answering the TC's question with facts, not opinions. Its fine if you enjoy EWs just for the sake of it being an EW, but don't suggest something is or isn't underpowered by supporting it with opinions.

I heard you need 10 luck and some other stuff, but that is insane. I'm not saying in any way or form that energy weapons are better than guns or unarmed, because they're not. Energy Weapons needs lots of work, but if you like to use them, they are viable.

Weird, you only carry one gun? Because if you do carry more than one gun, you're going to need more ammo, and I know for lets say Anti Material Rifle ammo, it's going to weigh more. Nice math though, but weak statement. Yes Energy Weapons are underpowered, he should probably go unarmed/melee and skip guns and energy weapons. He'll save weight and it does just as good if he's playing hardcoe. Problem is people are exaggerating how difficult it is and how hard it is to kill something with energy weapons, when it's not true, and not everyone is playing hardcoe mode.

Uhm... Yeah... There is no problems for EW characters with the Gauss Rifle, the problem is that it's the only weapon viable against high DT enemies.
Some people say Plasma Caster is too but I tried it and it wasn't very good IMO.
Not worthless, just not good enough.

Irrelevent statement. If I carry 2 guns that utilize 2 different types of ammo, my total weight can be more or less depending on the ammo type of the 2nd gun.
For example, lets say I carried 1000 .308 rounds. Total weight is 55.
If I had 375 .308 rounds and 625 12.77mm rounds, my total weight would be 25.

You forgot your guns all have special rounds to carry, along with regular rounds, you have to double that weight again if you're using special rounds on top of regular rounds for each gun. Not to mention the guy who made this thread never asked about ammo weight in hardcoe mode, so why you interjected it into the discussion is beyond me.

Don't forget the Tesla Beaton, despite its impracticalities. EW should be rare but very powerful, In NV however they are quasi rare and weak... :sadvaultboy:

I guess you can just call me old skool. I personally like the conventional weapons over the "lazumbeamz". Nothing better than putting hot lead into your targets leg to set up the killing blow. Also i was never a big fan of my kills turning into piles of ash or a goo-like substance, I'd prefer a dead corpse for everyone to see :)

Yea it has a real nice damage but it's reloading time doesn't really help when facing Giand Radscorpions, Cazadors, Lakelurks or Deathclaws. :P
And it's ammo consumption... O_o
I know I have a lot of money and stuff but man does it require a lot of ammo...
Wait... I never used Max Charge ammo with it... Gonna have to try it out a little later.

whatever dev thought that not only should energy weapons only work if it crits, but it should consume upwards of 40 rounds of energy, needs to removed from gameplay balance decisions. The amount of wonky mechanics for energy weapons in this game is astounding.

Why would I carry more than 1 special round of the same type?(assuming ammo isn't scarce that is) .308 JSP has a 1.5x multiplier and no drawback. 12.7mm only has hollow points.
The TC asked a very generic question. No where did he condition that the answer must be for X or Y scenarios.

With Max charge, and a well placed shot, I took out 5 cazadors in one shot. I also took out 2 deathclaws with one shot as well.

Why would you not carry more than one type of round? Not sure. For other folks, they could possibly not want to waste AP rounds on geckos if they don't have to. For those 2 two guns maybe, but not everyone carries those 2 guns. Point still stands, energy weapons only need 2 types of ammo compared to guns needing multiple amounts of ammo per gun. Not to mention how scare 12.7 and .308 is unless you buy them.

He only asked is it underpower, and is ammo scare. Is it underpowered compared to guns and melee/unarmed in terms of easier to play then yes, no in terms is it hard to kill things. Is ammo scare nope.
