Isn't being "proud of being a humie" like being proud of being a "birth survivor"?

I have a book. It's called 'Subtle is the Lord, the life and science of Albert Einstein.' Just the fact it exists confirms my pride in humanity. Despite all the wars and the greed and the hatred and stupidity we are capable of, we can reach out from our little animal brains, trapped in our frail needy bodies, and wonder, and discover, and see beyond the senses that the need to survive equipped us with.

Look up into the night sky. What you see is points of light. We may never reach them, but we know they are giant nuclear explosions of gas, we know how ridiculously far they are, we know how big they really are, we know the light they give off that our eyes can't detect, we know how and why gravity is affecting them over the vast reaches of space, causing them to move, imperceptibly yo our senses. We worked all that out, stuck on this poxy planet living our short, troubled lives.

I'm not proud to be human. We are destructive, selfish, mostly corrupt in everyway that matters and are systematically sixually assulating the planet so that future generations have no chance.

I can't explain how much I agree. Humans are selfish and greedy and driven mostly by money. Screw all other life on this planet as long as the human population is fine then stuff the rest is how I see most people's approach and it sickens me.

My favourite saying and one that if everyone lived by would make the whole world better:
"We do not inherit the world from our ancestors, but borrow it from our children"

I think most of you are taking the question incorrectly -- we obviously don't have any choice on what we are. I think the question is more along the lines of: do you take pride in the achievements of the human race and of being a part of it? To which my answer is yes. We can throw all the bad things human kind has done in its time around this thread all we like, but there's no denying that it's done some great things as well.

I will not deny the human race has achieved some great things.... space exploration for example, however I stand by what I said previously which is humanity as a race are selfish and destructive. This world would be alot healthier if humanity were to disappear tomorrow.

This. Sure it's good that humanity has discovered what it has and has done great things. But if you asked me whether or not I would take space exploration, and all the other (subjectively) great things we've done, but the price is the wanton massicre and destruction of not only ourselves, but of other animals and their habitats, all to further our "greatness". . . I'd not even think twice. The world would have been much, much better off if we had never existed. God knows what will happen if we actually manage to colonise another planet. I'd rather not spread the plague of humanity. All we can hope for is a mass natural disaster that wipes us out, or the first aliens we meet realise what a virus we are, and take it upon themselves to rid the universe of such a mindless, destructive force.

Wow, some of you guys really enjoy trying your hardest to pretend you're intentionally misinterpreting the intent of a question. Is there any sort of an enjoyment in derailing a thread based on how a question was posed ?

Am I proud to be a human? Or to put it into words that may be harder to just respond to with "I didn't have a choice so I'm not even going to consider the question but I am going to derail this thread anyway". Am I proud of what the human race has been doing and what my part in it all may be ?

Well, like with most things there is a mixture of pride and disappointment involved.

I'm disappointed in how we use our superior intelligence to wage wars when we would be perfectly capable of resolving just about any issue through words if greed did not stop some of us from doing that. And I'm disappointed how the majority gives into the wants of the few and greedy over technicalities that they often ignore for their own gain. And I'm disappointed in how many of us just watch and even contribute to tearing apart some of the good things on this planet and how destructive we humans as a whole can be.

However, in the same way...

I'm proud of those of us who are trying their best to preserve and learn about the world. I'm proud of how in some places the majority favors peaceful solutions to the problems we face and I'm proud of how whenever there is a hurdle created by how we accidentally offset the balance in how the world works by rauaging areas that house certain breeds of animals or by how we allow ourselves to grow to be so many due to medical and general science and engineering we end up trying to find a solution to that and ofter succeed.

Over all I'd say it was impossible to really answer this question without really knowing if there is any sort of a goal to life. If it was to keep the diversity of life to a maximum I'd probably say I was not proud in what we humans have done to the more fragile species (it didn't take long for us to exterminate the flightless Great Auk =.=), if it was about the survival of your species I'd probably say I was very proud, honestly we've extended our lives by a good 30 years or more, heck we've doubled our numbers and heck no one can argue we've spread a lot since man first started forming civilized societies, if it was about studying the world I'd say of all the known species we most certainly know it the best and if it was about allowing everyone of your species the most luxury I'd both be proud and disappointed, we help our own who already have it pretty sweet but don't do enough for those that are worse off even if we do something and then there are different answers depending on just what life is about.

So on a final note I'm going to pick my own goal in life and base my estimate of that. My goal in life is to enjoy it, I want to live as long as I can and I want to have a great time while I'm at it, and as we humans have built great societies that support that and as I'm already on my way to achieve my life goal at least managing it for the first few years of it I'm gonna say my species has done a pretty good job.

Now I realize there is famine and disease raging around certain parts of the world but I am still proud of the progression we've gone towards because they are the results of the few and inexperienced in the industrial world, I think we as a whole are trying to right the wrongs of the past and dwelling on those would simply be silly. Slowly bit by bit the average quality of life people have over the world is steadily rising and I have hopes that in the future we will be capable of abolishing famine and disease for good through the discoveries we make and the technology we develop year by year. Heck we even have paralyzed people managing to walk again through new technology and genetically enhanced food has saved millions of lives even if millions have been lost the number would only be higher if it wasn't for the new technology behind it.

So the final verdict is that I'm proud of the human race and I hope I can be proud of myself in the future as a contributing member of the species.

"People are dumb dangerous panicky animals and you know it"

Baring the gritty details of religion and politics I would say that i'm proud to be a human/person. However i'm disgusted that there are things out there calling themselves "Human" that commit acts of atrocity, genocide, and sheer madness. Only thing that disgusts me more than the people that commit these acts or the foolish individuals that actually defend these actions be it through belief, power, and/or monetary gain.

I hope in time humanity learns to respect the natural world for what it is and learns to love it and not destroy it in order to fulfill humanity's own selfish agenda's. I am not holding out any hope for it happening in my lifetime, but maybe in the future humans will see the mistakes made now that seem to be blinding most people to the harsh reality of the world.

Some people have already seen the destruction we have cause and are trying to save the endangerd animals on the planet and I hope they succeed to the whole of humanity.

I for example believe the wolf should be reintroduced to Scotland as it has as much right to live as anything else. They were wiped out by humans because they were seen as a threat to livestock etc. I hate all forms of hunting as there is no sport in it, you want sport fight a lion with your bare hands and no weapons, then it is sport because it is fair. Destruction of forest for farming and urban buildings really irritayes me and don't get me started on animal testing. Still I could rant for a very long time about this and go into much more detail however I will stop now as I doubt many people care what I have to say.

I can't take pride in genetics

Indeed. I would only my proud of my own accomplishments, or those of my family and friends.

As opposed to what, dung beetles? Isopods? Naked mole rats? anol dwelling winged monkeys?
Now if there were another dominant life form on the planet on par with humanity, then I could understand comparisons, and the need to feel superior.
We no more chose to be human than ants chose to be ants.

I'm neither proud nor ashamed of being human, American, white, a Lobo (school), etc. There's no reason to be. They're things that I just am and have no control over, so there's nothing to be proud about. Pride should be reserved for accomplishments. Honestly, I think that someone who became a citizen of the US after coming from a different country has more right to be proud than someone who was naturalized, same goes for any country.

I'm going to say yes, mostly out of spite for those who go "ugh, I hate humanity, we're soooo evul, and dumb."

No, I'm not proud to be a human, but I'm happy that I'am a human.

These two posts basically sum it up. Humans are simultaneously horrifying, selfish and destructive and wonderful, compassionate, and intelligent.

I'm kind of surprised at how the majority of people in this thread share my viewpoint on this matter. Whenever it comes up with other people, they generally seem confused by the premise or even worse, say dumb things like "What? Do you hate America or something? How dare you."
