Are you proud to be a human?

Post » Tue Sep 06, 2011 5:17 am

I read an article yesterday (don't ask me for a link I can't remember for the life of me) and it was about how being proud of nationality and race is pointless, and instead we should focus on being proud of human. And of how in the blink of an eye in the timeline of our planet we have found ways to do things that will forever shape the way it changes.

It's a question, and also I want you to discuss whether or not you think humanity has had a positive effect on the planet.

Have at it!

Nope, I would rather be a hedgehog with a ghetto voice and a trilby hat.

EDIT: I've changed my avatar, can anyone tell me what they see?

Being proud of anything we're not responsible for is asinine.

I'm not proud to be human. We are destructive, selfish, mostly corrupt in everyway that matters and are systematically sixually assulating the planet so that future generations have no chance.

No, I'm not proud to be a human, but I'm happy that I'am a human.

This works for me too.

Proud to be human as opposed to... what? An animal?

I'm happy that I'm human instead of a platypus, manatee or aardvark, for example, but I don't really see how I could take any pride from it. Where's the comparison? Feeling superior to an inferior lifeform one cannot even communicate with? Like saying "I'm better than you" to a dog, which then turns its head, pants and waves its tail. :P

Guess I should clarify. Ashamed to be a part of a species that picks apart it's own planet and leaving it for it's own destruction for personal comfort or proud to be part of a species that builds awe inspiring structures and is capable of acts of kindness that is found nowhere else in the history of our planet?

In my opinion, scattered acts of kindness throughout our history does not, and will struggle to, redeem/counter our destructive, selfish side.

I don't see how people can take pride in having been born with a particular collection of phenotypes. You can only find real pride in your own personal accomplishments and behavior. If you can't take pride in the way you act, then you have no reason whatsoever to be proud. Pride in race or nationality tends to be popular with people who contribute nothing of value to society, and have nothing in their own personal lives from which to derive pride. So, instead, they say they are "proud" the accomplishments of people who happen to look a little bit like them. It's like a parasite being proud of the accomplishments of its host.

As for being proud of being human, no, I'm not. Humanity is a mix of good and bad. I can only try my best to further the good in my own life.

You can't really be proud of being anything, since you had no choice in the matter. It's not like you could change it if you were ashamed of it. "I'm sick of being human, I think I'll be an aadvark instead!"

It's more feasible to have national pride, since citizenships can be gained and renounced, but really the whole idea is seen as being distasteful and/or vulgar by most people - especially here (though being quietly smug is quite acceptable).

You could argue that it's possible to be proud of being human in the Elder Scrolls because there are equal competitors (Elves, Khajiit, Argonians) to rank yourself against - but since you can't choose not to be human (from within that universe) then there's no sense of having pride in it. How can you be proud of something you haven't actually done?

Yeah, I think that would just about do for me. Otherwise, it's not something I've really considered...

Not proud and not happy to be a human, our life is too short. I'd rather be an elf. Or a companion cube.

No, for the same reasons I'm not proud of race or nationality. There's nothing to be proud of. I didn't work hard to overcome a difficult series of tests and obstacles in order to be born human. Maybe instead I should be ashamed that I failed to be born as some superior alien species.

As opposed to being proud of nationality and race? Yeah, sure. I think being proud of nationality is stupid unless you personally made a major impact on your country or you personally chose to live where you do while having intimate knowledge of how other societies and cultures work. Pride in nationality is especially ridiculous in America.
And being proud of race just seems stupid. Race should be totally inconsequential.

In general, no, I'm not proud to be a human. Being a human svcks, not because we're "evil" or anything stupid like that, but because having this much awareness of existence svcks. Being a human being means being sad and lonely and stupid.

How can a human be more animal than an animal? It's like saying a snake is more of a fish than a fish is. Besides that means you must hate yourself aswell.
