Are you referring to the hypothetical where two guys fight over a sword or something? That was ages ago while the game was still in development, lol. I love when the NPCs comment on my items.

It seems to happen a lot in Riften, most of my vendors have killed each other over stuff ive dropped on the ground. even mjoll got in on the action, which was odd for such a goody-two-shoes.

It happened to me in Riften, too. Maybe people have a generally lower responsibility level (don't know the technical term. All I know is there was something like this in MW and OB) in RIften, because of the Thieves Guild's influence.

only in riften ?

thats the only place ive experienced actual fights over my gear. in other towns some npcs will react over certain items e.g. apparel and weapons, but theyre not interested in things like gems. kinda weird dropping a flawless diamond in front of a beggar and all he says is 'got a septim?' lol.

I've seen a video of someone dropping his Sanguine Rose in the middle of the Bee and Barb in Riften, and three NPCs fought to death over it. One actually killed the other two, but he never attempted to pick up the item afterwards and went on with his business.

A few days back I dropped some stolen goods in Whiterun and a guard tried to arrest me for "littering." Needles to say he recueved an arrow to the knee.

It's an offense to drop a weapon in town, and will generate a bounty, IIRC. Riften, specifically the Bee and Barb in the evenings, is THE place to drop valuables.

I did this the other day with some flawless gems. The first one got no response. The second got the orc at the bar to stand up and turn around. The third prompted an argument between him and the Stormcloak sympathizer as who saw it first. The orc won that fight, but somehow Marcurio, who had been sitting quietly wearing nothing but his shoes, had gotten into the fight. He wouldn't die, though. Every time he got back up he got beaten down again. Finally I talked to him and he stopped fighting. In the end there were three dead: the old man, the lizard lady and Haelga.

Check out this video of a brawl that breaks out in the Bee and Barb in Riften, when somebody drops some stuff and they fight over it:

I dropped some gear in Dawnstar and nothing happened there, either. I think Idon'tunderstand's resposibility theory might be right.

I think it must be a PC specific thing... No NPC has commented on anything I've dropped, except for saying "hay watch it" or a guard triggering a dialogue saying someone might get hurt: which no one ever has.

Some hilarious stuff in http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1305225-i-just-experienced-the-most-absurd-ai-in-this-game-i-think/ about dropping items

I'm gonna try this tonight:

"I love dropping diamonds in crowded inns/taverns just to start a riot.

I dropped two armor items by the well/outdoor shops in Whiterun. Within seconds, an NPC ran to me and asked if I didn't need the items, if he could have them.

I told him he could, and he took them. Several days later, when I ran from Breezehome to Dragonreach, through the well area, both pieces were back on the ground.

On another character, I got tired of running around between all the traders to sell stuff. Since I already had over 100,000 gold, I dumped all the items by the well. These items were armor, weapons (including enchanted), soul gems, regular gems, rings, necklaces, etc., etc.

As of a month later (real life time), nobody had picked anything up yet.

Guess there's no way of telling NPC reactions to things like this.
