Probably just a troll that's been tamed, fitted with armor and set to follow people.

Maybe the armor is enchanted to control them? Pretty much like the slave apparel from Morrowind?

You're assuming the troll knows it's being hired out. It's probably like buying the dog from the bloke outside Markarth. You give him the money, you get the troll.

This, you probably buy one from a Dawnguard npc who trains them.

Seriously? Are you a beta tester or am I just being oblivious?

I am terribly excited with the armored trolls.

I have always thought that some trolls were able to show intelligence.

We know that http://uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:A_Poorly_Scrawled_Note#A_Poorly_Scrawled_Note are able to write (poorly) and had the notion of a monetary value, or at least tried to practise racketeering.

We also know that they sometimes have a clanic social behaviour, since Oblivion featured two http://uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Creatures#Troll, namely the Azhklan and the Kalperklan. It has already been observed that they obey a hierarchy, since a http://uesp.net/wiki/OBMobile:The_Troll_King has been reported as well as http://uesp.net/wiki/Dawnstar:Bestiary (in a place of Skyrim, near Dawnstar and in the South of it, called http://uesp.net/wiki/Dawnstar:South -- the Trolls here were called Trollkin, though It is not clear that it refers to a clan, a subspecies or a hierarchic rank).

They have also been able to use weapons at war, perhaps even to craft them : the game dawnstar featured http://uesp.net/wiki/Dawnstar:Weapons, as well as http://uesp.net/wiki/Dawnstar:Gift_Items. If Bethesda finally decides to add a hand-to-hand perk tree, the use of cestus would be great, and the presence of Troll cestus could be an awesome addition. I hope that both Troll armors and Troll weapons will be seen in Dawnguard, and lootable. They sound really badass.

I really hope that we'll be able to communicate with those hireable trolls, know their motivation, discover some parts of their culture and society (which is presumably embryonic, but we could be surprised). Personnally, I'd love some Troll questgiver. Maybe he would ask us to help him retake Frostheim, or to help in a religious ceremony, where some Troll female is transcended to become the new http://uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Agnar%27s_Journal? This kind of absolutely fancy and frenzy stuff would be awesome, and highly satisfying, in my opinion. Maybe some Troll crafter could also reveal to the player how to craft Troll weapons and armors, hence making new recipes available in the forge.

I also just realized that a Troll protected by an enchanted armor, allowing him to resist fire, must be some dreadful opponent.
you're overthinking it...wishful thinking is the path to disappointment ;)

Seems like I remember a troll following a Briarheart around somewhere?
Yes, in the large ruin complex at the westmost point in Skyrim there's a Briarheart sitting close to a troll like they're best buddies.

The armored troll is most likely trained, we've seen a lot of weird trained things in the TES series ranging from the Goblins in Mournhold to rats and scribs.

.....dafaq?

I think they did this as a joke but there are a few rare incidents where things will be marked as belonging to cows, or so I've heard.

I either think that you'll be able to summon them or one of the dawnguard trains them and then hires them out

Usually if you're putting someone in a harness with a leash you're not paying them. If there's any money changing hands they're paying you but that's a totally different thread, forum.. site.

And why wouldn't it work? Leash keeps it from running away, cattle prod keeps it from turning on you. Worked for the goblins in Moria(sp).
How will you fight then if your hands are full, it leaves the Dawnguard volnurable. In the gameinformer it was already stat
ed you pay, so I'm thinking they can be intelligent if given the opurtunity.

 It was just a joke, didn't mean to be taken seriously when commenting on leading a troll around with a leash and a cattle prod.

im guessing theres like a handler at fort dg and you pay him to 'hire' a troll that has been trained, not pay the actual trolls themselves
Definitely could see this. I think you're probaly right.

Didn't a troll commit suicide in Oblivion, complete with a (moronically written) suicide note? They're awfully...humanoid. My guess is that, like goblins and the modern-day Falmer, they have some level of higher intelligence (though that wouldn't explain the fact that trolls aren't found in groups, unlike the two former creatures).

Nah Dawnguard is going to be released in six days and that's only for the xbox, it just wouldn't make sense since that you'll have a month to get every piece of info if you're on another platform

skyrim trolls act like gorillas...strong territorial beasts with a touch of intelligence but not enough to be civilized. Their movements even seem very apelike.

oh and lore tells us that beasts in skyrim are different then beasts elsewhere in tamriel...so trolls in skyrim are stronger but not as smart as trolls in cyrodil

the load screen even mentions skyrim horses being slower but more hardy then horses in the rest of tamriel

you're overthinking it...wishful thinking is the path to disappointment

I suppose you are right... :(

But it's in my nature : when someone throws an idea at me, I sometimes can't refrain from shaking it, looking at it from every possible viewpoint I can discover, connecting it to other ideas and schemes of ideas and so on...

Also, I feel that expressing the results of this thoughts is a way to tell the developers, in case they read it, "Hey! You know, we do care about your work! Thanks for inspiring us. Here is what you made us think to. Please, keep giving us great stuff to delve in and explore.". In a similar way, looking for every possible detail in former games related to a particular topic is also a way to tell them that we don't fear intricacy, and don't mind investigating. (In fact, I personnally love it.)

But in this particular topic, I hadn't much to overthink, as I already thought quite much to it as far back as when I discoverd the Uderfrykte Matron in Oblivion. I find Her fascinatng, and hope we'll some day get to know more about Her origins and status with respect to other Trolls.
