Since my post was apparently taken as offensive, I'll try to elaborate...How would they even work? They free up your hands but they still weigh a ton so I don't see what benefit it would have in-game. I think they'd look cool, especially if I had a hermit character again. Maybe they could (for some reason) allow you to carry more weight but just make more noise so it's harder to sneak?
-Why should we take a negative hit from something that should make sense. You are taking real world logic "backpacks would make noise, and thus they should make sneaking around harder" and comparing it with "magic". Having a backpack in the game would make the idea of carrying a ton of supplies logical, but that should not come with some horrible side effect for realism's sake, unless it was an option to the player to take it or leave it, but that raises the problem of only being able to carry a max of like 8 items without a backpack, and that wouldn't be fun, so the backpack (if there was no pipboy) would be a must have to almost everyone, and making everyone take a negative hit because it's an element of the game would be stupid.
Having a big bulky bag of gear on your back would just make even more. Basically it's like an agility (-1).
-As opposed to the magic pipboy? or carrying all your gear by hand? why should we get -1 agi or something like that when the alternative is to solve the problem with magic and say no negative effects are found.
Huh? What "lulz pipboy black hole!" approach? Making noise in FO3 was a factor, that's why we walked slowly when sneaking. That's why I said noise could be a trait of the backpack.
-Yes, making noise in FO3 was a factor of stealth, but when you take situation A (magic pipboy = no negative effect on stealth) and compare it to B (a backpack to carry our gear, which makes sense, and then penalizing the player for having a logical way to carry supplies.) is a bad design move, because the previous "fix" for carrying gear was "magic".
Well I'm sure your school bag isn't filled with metal guns, knives, and bullets that clang around. And if you take issue with the noise idea than just have it cause (-1) agility because it's so big it makes us a bigger target to spot?
Edit: And add what Robotoh just said into this post too since it applies to me as well. I want backpacks too, I never said "no way they make too much noise".
-I get that you both want backpacks and I'm trying to argue with your "there should be a negative side effect associated with the backpacks" point.---
Uhh. So I was agreeing with you, genius. I'm saying backpacks would be a good idea, but they would still have certain drawbacks. I never once said that a blackhole pipboy is a better alternative.
-You're saying that having a backpack added should have a negative effect on the character in-game when it should not, because the prior solution was a "magic" pipboy (with no negative side effects), if anything there should be backpacks and they shouldn't be louder and make it harder to sneak, and they shouldn't weigh a great deal, because it's a logical solution, if you had a backpack and it was full of guns/knives/and bullets, SURE it would make noise and make it harder to seak around IRL, but when the alternative is a Magic device that stores all your gear in your wrist, we should not be penalized for having a realistic approach.
But how readily available would those be? I mean I could walk into 'Springvale Elementary' and find schoolbags in Fallout Universe.
-I always wished there was a schoolyard backpack there :foodndrink:
Edit:Sorry for thinking you didn't want a backpack because of the noise variable. read that part wrong.
