Banned from casinos

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 5:09 pm

So we know that when you win too much from a casino, you are kicked out. In fact it was shyown ina demo done by a dev at E3. He rigged it so he would win the jackpot, he did, and the pit boss asked him to leave. From that point do you know if you are banned from the casino or just from gambling in it, because if you were banned, it might make some quest unattainable.

I hope it does make some quests unavailable... I wish more games made you think twice about your actions. Wouldn't bother me a bit if I needed to play more than one character to access every quest and feature.

Well yes but in the video the guy won 2000 chips and was asked to leave. I dont know what that equates to in legion dollars, ncr bucks or caps but it seems an awfully low amount to get kicked out for. Oh and i hope we have atcuall different exchange rates.

Regardless of how much the winnings are worth, I still would be disappointed if being banned didn't result in losing a few quests.

I hope we will be able to change our looks (through completion of a quest) or use a disguise (which have been confirmed), or use sneak, to be able to get back the ability to gamble in a casino.

Well there's two versions of being banned. There's breaking the bank and not being allowed to gamble, and then there's shooting people and being shot on site for being inside :gun:

Don't worry, it's pretty standard policy; both from a realistic perspective as well as a game perspective.

Realistically casino's like to make money, not give it away. So if a player is 'on a roll' the management will often persuade the person to refrain from more gambling by offering certain accomodations etc. etc. (A bit of the 'take your winnings and go' but with friendly smiles and pats on the back).

From a game perspective, the developers wouldn't want a lowlevel character running out with 100000 Chips on day one, just because luck was in his favor and he spent the last 8 hours on a slot machine. So they place a maximum on how much you can haul away from the casino every day/week. This works two ways in that the player doesn't suddenly have tons of cash but also a nudge out the door to go do some quests and exploring the game instead of playing 'Vegas Poker Online' ;)

At least that's my take on the situation. So don't worry, you won enough for one night but you will be welcome to gamble again at another time.

Technicaly its more like Hoyls game since theres no actual "online" part to the game and you cant realy win anyting real from thoes games.

Granted your right about the "game boss" not wanting you to keep playing if your streak is too hot, For example the way to "win" at slots is to stop playing when you win fairly big, and go to another machine,(there s a bit of a complicated theaory that explains why it works and to be honest the margin is not that great, depending on the ratio ) but most casinoes have rules against you doing just that on weekends.

but then I usualy get up after an hour at a given game just to strech my legs

It would provide more incentive for more playthroughs, though playthroughs won't be a problem for me, ill be on 100 hours by christmas :D

I can't imagine what kind of quests would be associated with one's gambeling habit, besides the obligatory "Hey buddy help me screw over the Pit Boss" quest or "The Big Card Tournament" quest.

On top of that...Mind your gambling if you don't want to get kicked out. That's my thinking. Win a little, call it quits. Simple.

I wonder if you space out you winnnings throughout the play-through if you will still get banned. Say, we will 1000$ in one night, and 6 months of game time later we win another 1000$ will we get banned? That would be stupid.

Yeah, I agree. That would mean there's a hard total limit of how much you can win across the entire game. Eventually, you'd be banned from all casino's if that were the case. I hope, and pray I'm right, that it's on a purely visit-by-visit basis, and it's the winning $2000 in one night is the hard line. After all...winning is good, as it encourages you to spend...but you also need to lose so they make money, and the chances of always, always winning in a casino are next to nothing.

Does every casion have a $2000 cap? I think I remember reading that Casinos will have different caps. $2000 is not what I would call High Roller. Casinos like the Ultra-Luxe should have a cap of $100,000.

Fallout has Rich people. The people that run NCR, Mob Families in New Reno, Caravan owners, Mine Owners, Brahmin Ranchers and Tenpenny. There are people that would think $2000 is nothing. Mr.House would be very Rich. Merchants, I can spend several thousand in FO2 to buy a nice weapon or T51b power armour. The Shi look wealthy to me.

Point is FO3 mostly had poor people on the West Coast there are alot of Rich High rollers. I give a merchant $30,000 to buy a suit of T51b PA what's to say he would not want to put it all on Red?

Players in early Fallout games would massively increase their Gamble skill, go to a slots machine, put weights on the keys that would run the luck check for them, and leave the computer for a couple of hours. They would then come back with enough money to last the entire game, and the casino owners were none the wiser. While I don't advocate being kicked out of casinos entirely simply for having good luck, there has to be some limitations or it would seriously impact the balance of the game.

Of course if they were going towards realism, you could just walk out of a casino, change your suit of armor and then walk back in and start gambling again, but Fallout NPCs tend to have this supernatural perception of who you are no matter what you are wearing.

And the gameplay balance, I was meaning to add. Circulating such amounts of currency to the player would just brake the economy and, once again, make money (and likely most quest rewards) redundant.

Despite the wealthiness, I doubt they would simply hand such sums like 100,000 for measly locals and wastelanders over a lucky cardgame. Bartering is a wholly different affair.

Well, that's the point of gambling. And suffice it to say, Gambling and Barter share very little. Their events of chance and bluffing, but other than that, gambling only exists to make people think that they can get rich...and sometimes they do.
...Winning the 100,000 jackpot should be worth an achievement though.

I understand game balance. The Devs don't want to break the game by letting someone have $100,000 right away. They can balance it out very easy. With Reputation System in place it should be easy to balance. You walk up to a casino with a cap of $100,000 and they tell you to mess off. They won't let you in till you can prove you have $100,000 and a reputation of being a high roller with other casinos. They could even add that you need Mr.House's approval. It's not that hard to think of ways to balance things.

On the West Coast there are people that would laugh at $2000.

I kinda like Tactic's take on gambling- instead of simply risking caps in casinos, you can put up items for stake and risk them for equivalent items from random NPCs in the Wastes. For example, I might bid two Stim Packs for a clip of ammunition from an NPC that accepts gambling. We play a dice minigame or something, and whoever wins takes the whole pot. It adds a lot of depth to the gambling system as a whole because players become forced to risk more than money if they always want to get what they want.

Interesting take, wish I had the drive, time and desire to play Tactics...however, I feel the bartering part, or gambeling for items, would kinda ruin the Casino feel. Strictly cash. I can use the cash to buy the items.

You mean the 2000 jackpot? I can't believe there will be eight casinos and all will have the same 2000 limit? So out of those eight the most luxurious will have the same limit as the slummiest one?
Oh and what is the most luxurious casino in the game and what one is the worst/cheapest/slummiest?
