Benny's Last Stand.

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:46 am

Well, guys, today I finally killed Benny. I chose to kill him in a duel, one-on-one, in the arena.

Damn, was I surprised. First of all, he put up a [censored] spectacular fight, for an unarmored guy in a fancy suit. He said he wasn't going to make it easy on me, and boy, was he not kidding. I had 15 melee, so maybe that didn't work in my favor, but still. He just hacked away at my health in a ridiculously fast pace. But I refused to take the coward's way out and have him killed for me. I was going to end him.

Eventually, I did. My third to last blow crippled his arm. He picked up his machete again and attacked again. Second to last blow crippled his head. He still came at me. Last blow was a crit, and I have the bloody mess perk.

Satisfying, to say the least.

Then, I looked in his inventory, and my jaw dropped. His 9mm, Maria, had been there in his inventory all along. If he had wanted to, he could have blown me away at any time. I was unarmed. When I knocked the machete out of his hands, he PICKED IT UP TO FIGHT ME WITH IT INSTEAD OF USING HIS GUN. From the stories he tells and the fact that he wasn't stripped down, and the fact he even had the gun on him, it tells me he snuck it past the CL guards. How else would he bring it with him into a machetes only arena fight if he was at the mercy of the legion?

That made me reevaluate really just how awesome Benny was. At first, I saw him as random mysterious [censored] in a suit. Later as a coward, after what happened at the tops.

But in the end, he really decided to go out in style. Like the song says, he did it his way.

It dampened my satisfaction, a little, knowing he let me win, essentially. Out of a sense of honor I decided to take the 9mm and the suit. Continue the legacy, in a way.

He could have at least TRIED to blast his way out of the camp. What did he really have to lose? Benny's a noob. :unsure2:

He'd have to get past me, though, because he was tied up until then.

And apparently, I'm a worthy opponent. Or he knew he couldn't blow them all away. He lost all his stealth boys and had a nice suit to protect himself with. Those aren't good odds.

There are magical forces are work in the Mojave. Namely NPC programming and scripting..

On a side note.. I told him I was gonna kill him then shot him in the back of the head execution style. Wheres your sass now? Oh thats right, in a pile on the ground!

However, he still snuck his 9mm in. He didn't shoot you with it. I feel like the guys at Obsidian put that in on purpose.

I think they did it just so you could loot the gun from his corpse tbh. The guy's a snake, I don't think he'd think twice about bringing a gun to a knife-fight.

I was surprised at Benny's strength as well. i found him tied up in Ceasars camp and decided to kill him so i stepped back a bit, kneeled down, and shot him in the head with 100% repaired Anti-Material Rifle, I also had 100 Guns skill. He didn't die. i sat there with my mouth open for a bit before reloading the save and using a stealth boy to get the critical sneak bonus, that did it, but still...

Agreed. After he screwed you over twice trying to kill you if you allowed him to get away at the tops I don't think he would've thought twice.

I don't know too much about the Arena's rules, but I don't think Caesar would've been too happy if Benny had used Maria in the match... If he'd killed the Courier that way (instead of sticking with the machete), I don't think the Legion would've let him go afterward. He was already on pretty thin ice as it was, so maybe that's why he kept his gun hidden? Uh haha, I dunno~ I'm bad at speculating. D: *shrug*

I do like thinking that he did refrain from using Maria for the reasons that you mentioned, though. It certainly does make him more likable. :'P

He is impressively tough, isn't he? I decided to finish him with a machete -- this is legion territory after all -- and despite having 100 melee it took about fifteen hacks for his head to be seperated from his shoulders. I don't think I'd make a professional executioner with handywork like that.

Not necessarily, you never know with this game. Half the time stuff is different when I loot someone or something. I was just stating my experience, I don't know if his inventory is set to one thing for not.

With someone as story essential as Benny, im pretty sure the inventory would be fixed.

"Maybe Khans kill people without looking them in the face, but I ain't a fink, dig?"

There are two explanations for the pistol on his corpse
1# For easy convenience of looting so players who didn't kill him at the Tops aren't punished
2# He knew Caesar would kill him the moment he pulled out the pistol

Benny doesn't have access to a sniper rifle or VATS, and doesn't get reload from an earlier save if he screws it up the first time...

Moral Integrity indeed! He haz it.

But not necessarily the way most people think...

...he might have not pulled Maria for all the reasons mentioned, but if you offer to slip him a stealthboy and untie him you get an awesome demonstration of the unshakable structure and stability of his moral code. :lmao:

It cracked me up, so I won't describe it. Way funnier to reload a save and try it. hehe!

Yeah, he ended up being a likeable character. I just wish they implemented him into Wild Card, he even implies that you can team up. It's a shame, really.

He's not honorable at all...first, he had no ammo, and second, the pistol is only there for you to loot. Nothing more.

He had one bullet in that Maria.

That was one bullet enough to do a repeat of the intro scene.

I think he's honorable, in an odd way. He looks you in the eye when he shoots you, and wants to fight mano a mano-- and even thanks you if you let him go out that way. That's why I think he's honorable.

All honor went out the window when he acted all cool then tried to have the good squad kill me...that guy never learns.
