Best Game Soundtracks

So I started to look up some old games and got a big nostalgia blast from listening to the music. It got me to thinking I should make a "Best Game Soundtrack" thread. Amongst the numerous tracks amongst numerous games, what are your favorites?

I actually have :35-:45 as my ringtone, that's how much I like it.

Final Fantasy IX's OST is by far my favorite. Uematsu was asked to do only around ~30 tracks for the game, including character and battle themes, yet he ended up with over 150. He's called it his favorite score yet and I think it shows. Just an amazing soundtrack to an amazing game. /gush

I'm leaving out so many other games, like the rest of the Final Fantasy series, Chrono Trigger, Metal Gear Solid, etc. Just too many to list.

I was about to say "I bet you we'll see wingus in this thread" but damn he posted already!

My utmost favorite is X. The song in Zanarkand "A Fleeting Dream" is the best thing I've ever heard. To Zanarkand is also great, so is Auron's Theme and a Suteki Da Ne.

VIII and IX would be next. Then X-2. Uematsu is my favorite non metal/rock artist.

Uematsu had nothing to do with X-2's soundtrack, and it shows. A lot of that game's music sounds really stock (especially the dungeon stuff...I can pinpoint several of those pieces that were shamelessly ripped from other sources), but there's some good tracks I enjoy, like most of the town themes.

Yeah I know, the Uematsu part had nothing to do with the X-2 comment :P I didn't necessarily like all the music in X-2, but the songs Yuna sings I enjoyed and some of the other random songs that play.

The fact that I'm so predictable isn't much of a surprise, there really are only about five different things I post about.

I should probably lay low for a while though. I can only imagine folks on these forums picture me as someone who eats, sleeps and breathes Square-Enix. I have other interests, I swear. It only looks bad online. :unsure:

Nothing wrong with that, really. People can say what they want about the games, and I dislike some of them myself, but Square, even after the merge with Enix, is one of the few game companies in existence that's composed consistently amazing music for its video games.

It'll be interesting to see how the transition to new talent goes though. Uematsu, Mitsuda and the rest of the usual crew won't be doing it forever, and there seems to be a shortage of new talent specifically because they've relied on the veterans all these years. I suppose the same could be said for all aspects of game development, definitely gonna be strange once the greats all finally call it quits.

I used to be an avid WW2 FPS player in the early 2000s and still these soundtracks provoke the strongest of emotions in me. Also, these games blow their modern descendants out of the water easily.
