1.5 Beta - Shadows broken in Stereo 3D

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 3:30 am

Hi, 1.5 Beta update broke shadows in 3D, they no longer render in stereo most likely due to Z-buffer data removed somewhere in the rendering pipeline. I don't know if this was a performance saving measure or just an oversight on the part of Bethesda, but having the option of the old rendering method for shadows would be greatly appreciated for stereo 3D users. Thanks!

I can confirm new shadows rendering is an immersion breaker for all 3Dvision users. I think it has to do with the new shadow on grass feature from patch 1.5. Not really a great feature IMO, and the price to pay for us is out of all proportion... :ermm:

So it isn't just grass shadows, it's all shadows? If it's just the grass shadows then maybe we can simply get a turn-off-grass-shadows option or mod but if ALL the shadows suddenly go 2D... that's extremely bad for S3D users.

I too would greatly appreciate to have at the very least the old option for shadows. While I understand that beth has said they do not support S3D users, the reinstatement of a previously compatible settings isn't too much to ask.

Oh no!

What happened. Yes please. Is there a way to revert back to the previous patch? This patch has broken shadows for those of us playing in 3D.

The game looked sooooo good before this patch.

Thanks

Oh phew! Beta!

Hopefully Steam wont overide my "do not update game" settings...

Steam might - it has before. Best to make a COMPLETE copy of what you have now.

I'm really hoping this doesn't go through with no option to turn it off. The VAST majority of players aren't going to know this is coming until it hits. Steam doesn't have a "revert to old version" option and I don't see any old version on Bethesda's site.

I'm a recent migrant to PC from Xbox 360 specifically to play Skyrim in 3D after 30 hours on the 360 version. I repurchased the game at $60 to do so. It's not cheap, but I'm playing by all the rules to play on PC with everything that entails, including mods and 3D through third party drivers. I understand that Bethesda doesn't intend to to support 3D. Fine, but as it is 3D works perfectly through the work of 3D drivers and modders. Knowingly breaking it would just be in bad faith. I love your game and paid to play it the way I want to the same as anyone else who has used a mod. Please respect that.

Yeah I forgot they made a subforum for each beta patch, if a mod can move this thread that'd be great thanks!

I've exactly the same problem with the shadows in this new update. I'd like to know if someone is doing something to fix it! Was so perfect before the update.

This is tragic. Skyrim was the big motivation behind my latest upgrade to a passive 3d LCD TV. Hoping this gets fixed soon.

Agreed, just an option in the ini to use the old method would be sufficient and would make a huge difference. This is a big problem for stereo 3d users with an easy solution.

Same problem here. I was able to revert to 1.4 and I am hoping that the new official 1.5 released today fixes it. Does anyone know?

The official 1.5 patch is released and shadows are broken. Could have sworn I set Steam not to automatically update Skyrim, but there it is. I think I can understand now the frustration and disappointment PS3 users and others who experienced bugs that made the game unplayable felt after the game's release. Except of course that there wasn't a problem at all as of yesterday. Bethesda, if you're going to break it, please fix it!

I loved Skyrim in 2d and played 140 hrs and got nearly to the end with 3 characrs. I have a dreadful problem of not finishing games. Then tried it in 3d I have played another 50hrs and have made little progress because I can't stop staring at an amazing world Bethesda created. Weapons, NPC's all amazing. But the 1.5 shadow problem has stopped that. Please Bethesda look into this problem.

Like most things in skyrim, it will be up to the pc community to fix problems introduced by Bethesda in their updates.
Having recently tried the xbox 360 version after playing skyrim on the pc with extensive mods and 3d, it's so bad playing on a console I honestly say if I didn't have a pc, I wouldn't bother playing skyrim on a console ever. Slow loading, bad textures, poor framerate - it really is awful but that's bethesdas main customer base and they aren't as savvy as pc users.

Consoles are so out of date today, it's amazing people still use them for games

Hello,

I'm really disappointed that the team at Bethesda do not think gamers Nvidia 3D Vision, because since this updated 1.5 Skyrim becomes unplayable 3D Vision!

I really hope that the problem of shadows will be quickly corrected by Bethesda or even seen by the modders!

Because for me it forces me to stop playing!

Yes, unfortunately this is true, I think 90% of the shadows are being rendered in 2D. In some situations, it seems each image of the stereoscopic projection is receiving light from an opposite direction. we 3D users would REALLY appreciate if you could take care of it, as it enriches the game so much! :D

Boooo!!! My 3D is broken with the new patch and is now unplayable! Bethesda please fix this!!! Is it possible to go back to the 1.4 patch? I tried a reinstall, but Steam doesn't let you do so without being online, so I assume this means that the latest patch will be applies during the reinstall....

Quick question, do you guys have to play at 30fps? Or do you have enough power to get 60fps for 3d?

Wow - I don't know what this shadow change is but it comes out HIDEOUS in 3D. Bethesda, you've taken one of the most awesome games I've ever seen in 3D (thanks in no small part to the OP and the other folks involved in the 3D Vision Compatibility Project) and you've ruined it. I expect the AMD and third party 3D solutions got ruined just as badly.

It would be great if you could let us pick which shadow rendering system to use.

If you can't do that soon, could you PLEASE provide a way to 'downgrade' to version 1.4? The vast majority of 3D players didn't know this change was coming and now they are desperate to turn back the clock. Steam won't let them. There's nothing on Bethesda's download site. Guess where they're going to go next.

Depends on your hardware and your settings. Personally, if I see the FPS going above 30 then I start turning on more eye candy and downloading hi-rez mods. If you've got a beefy computer and/or lower settings, though, you can hit 60fps with stereo 3D going. (3D monitors are 120Hz these days so they can display 60Hz per eye.)

gtx 480/570/580/680 SLI rigs can maintain 60FPS per eye at 1080p in 3D most anywhere after 1.4 patch. There's some drops depending on scene into the 40s but for most part its solid 60FPS per eye for me. 560Ti SLI maybe close if heavily overclocked. AA generally needs to be reduced though, especially with the HRTP. I use 2xMSAA+2xTSAA+FXAA with HRTP for a great mix of IQ and FPS in 3D.

I get 60fps 3D at 720p with a GTX 560 Ti. I have a 720p 3D projector, so I'm limited to that resolution. 720p 3D performance is similar to 1080p 2D, which should make sense if you look at the numbers.

720p 2D = 2 million pixels
1080p 2D = 4 million pixels
720p 3D = 4 million pixels

720p 3D is just 2 unique 720p 2D images, so you're seeing 2 million plus 2 million. Anecdotally people say 720p 3D, whether it's games or Blu-rays, looks similar to 1080p 2D for detail. Plus, you get added clarity from seeing depth and volume. I've played a little on my 1080p 2D projector as well and it's better in certain ways, but overall I think 720p 3D is superior, a better use of 4 million pixels. I can only imagine what 1080p 3D, 8 million pixels, must look like!
